Purchased the excellent disc from which the upload is taken a year or so ago and it's one to which I often return, not least for this gorgeous rendition. Stylish, elegant music with classical leanings and a smattering of romantic colour. Lovely stuff.
"After Saint-Saëns’s mother died in 1888, his compositional output started going downhill. He began earning a reputation for becoming increasingly unsocial, in addition to his open dislike for stalwarts such as Brahms and Strauss. He despised the radicalism in Debussy’s works. The last years of his life saw him alone and detached from the world. Saint-Saëns eventually passed away Algiers in 1921. He got a state funeral at La Madeleine in Paris. ..."
Thank you for posting this superb recording- the entire opera is now available on B Records and it is a great opera- it is a revelation, another work of genius by Saint-Saens. It is hard to believe that he was so misjudged in terms of opera! May I also suggest that there is a new book by the distinguished musicologist "Saint-Saens and the Stage" - fascinating reading.
