    Im in the military, and we are trained relentlessly to self use the tourniquet if we were to loose a limb. Practise is essential.
    Maybe an interesting point for you captain, we are trained to have the tourniquet in a 'combat' ready state. So unlike yours, we open the tourniquet into a big loop and fold the last 6inches of the tag back on itself. Then you fold the excess up under the windless. That way, when you're in shock and have lost a limb, once to grab the tourniquet, it just unfolds itself into a big loop which can easily be slid up your limb. Once in position, you just pull tight the Velcro tab.
    You have to do be able to apply one handed, and have it pulled tight within 15 seconds.
    Practise doing it while holding your breath and closing your eyes, best way to simulate the shock of a shark bite.

      @OutOnTheReef  2 роки тому +3

      That is an awesome idea Scott closing my eyes because when you are in shock you never know if you're gonna be able to see good that is a great suggestion I will do that and also I'll follow the suggestion of folding it properly that way thank you so much for your awesome service and advice captain🤗👍

    As a hand surgeon, I can tell you, if it is not arterial blood don’t compress your hand so high, put the tourniquet directly above the wound. Compressive bandage is better and having tourniquet for more than 2 h.

    As ER nurse it is very important to identify the type of bleeding ie: arterial or venous. Arterial is usually bright red blood and could be squirting and a torniquet should be applied. Venous bleeding is usually darker red and oozing. This is better controlled through compression dressing and also application of Quick Clot packets. You should also carry some type of antiseptic wash, but you definitely have a good base to start from. I love your videos and adventures but always did wonder how you would handle an emergent situation since you're always by yourself. Thanks for the answer. If you need any help setting up a trauma bag let me know I would be more than happy to help. Stay safe out there.

    Steri strips are great to have glad to see you carrying those. I would highly highly recommend carrying new skin on the boat with you as well. It is essentially medical superglue and it helps seal wounds along with the steri strips. I work in medical and have used both several times.

    Great video captain. I just hope you never have to use any of it but YES, safety first. One thing I’d recommend to have is a set of bolt cutters in case you get a big hook pierced through , Or a good set of cutting pliers if you are solo. Been there done that kinda experience, not fun.

    • @OutOnTheReef
      @OutOnTheReef  2 роки тому

Takes about five minutes at the dock for the radio to link up to gps after that then if I have emergency emergency problem I just push the distress and send all my information and coordinates to USCG without talking to them you can never never have to much safety equipment on board and fellow boaters don’t forget to go over safety procedures especially radio use and Epirb use I’m going to get a new safety med kit thanks Capt Crooked lover your Crooked Pilot House thanks for help JT 🇺🇸🇺🇸🐠🐟🎣🛥🌴⛱🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
