Be My Guest | Chew Gek Khim: The only woman on Singapore's Forbes list

Вставка
  • Опубліковано 8 лют 2020
  • After a fierce takeover war that took place a decade ago, Chew Gek Khim, Executive Chairman of The Straits Trading, secured control of this century-old listed company. The Straits Trading is one of the companies her grandfather Tan Sri Tan Chin Tuan built up when he was the Chairman of the OCBC group. Chew was very close to her grandfather, and in fact the latter had a great influence on her career and values system. In this episode, Chew Gek Khim gives presenter Tung Soo Hua a tour of the Tan Chin Tuan Mansion, which houses fond memories of her growing up years. And it is also the first time Chew Gek Khim gives an interview in Mandarin.

“Your background does not determine the person you become . . . You decide what kind of person you are.”
“But life is a lot more complex than that.”

"we get along well as grandfather and granddaughter, but I'm not sure whether we can work together."
Had every family members in family businesses were given the freedom to choose their path like her, and trained as fierce like her grandfather taught her, (maybe) many families will stay as families and the business will stay as business. My parents forced my brother to be in family business and my father did not want to treat/train him as regular employees because he "loves" him. My brother did not do well in the business and got blamed because of his incompetence. Little did my father know that my brother's incompetence is mainly because of my father's own incompetence in teaching life lesson to my brother with the excuse of "love".

Many parents think that protecting their child from every unpleasant things and make the child happy is the most important thing. Those kids who are raised up like that will have a very miserable adult lives. They have to learn sooner or later but they have to learn eventually. Better learn it from young habits that you cant keep as you grow.
