Assamese / Ôxomiya, Asamiya / অসমীয়া
Native to: India
Region: Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland
Ethnicity: Assamese
Native speakers: 14.81 million (2011 census)
Language family: Indo-European (indo-Iranian)
is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language spoken mainly in the Indian state of Assam, where it is an official language. It is the easternmost Indo-European language, spoken by over 14 million speakers, and serves as a lingua franca in the region.
Nefamese is an Assamese-based pidgin used in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagamese, an Assamese-based Creole language is widely used in Nagaland. The Kamtapuri language of Rangpur division of Bangladesh and Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri districts of India are linguistically closer to Assamese, though the speakers identify with the Bengali culture and the literary language. In the past, it was the court language of the Ahom kingdom from the 17th century.
Along with other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, Assamese evolved at least before 7th century CE from the middle Indo-Aryan Magadhi Prakrit, which developed from dialects similar to, but in some ways more archaic than Vedic Sanskrit.
Its sister languages include Angika, Bengali, Bishnupriya Manipuri, Chakma, Chittagonian, Hajong, Rajbangsi, Maithili, Rohingya and Sylheti. It is written in the Assamese alphabet, an abugida system, from left to right, with many typographic ligatures.

A unique thing about Assamese is that even though it's a Indo-european language, It has a lot of Austroasiatic, Tibeto-Burman and other East Asian influences. This is because of its history and geographical location
One unique thing about Assamese is that it doesn't differentiate between dental and retroflex stops, which is unlike other Indian languages. Instead, it has merged both of them into alveolar stops.
Being a bengali, I can understand a little assamese language but I can read the language as this language shares a very similar writing script to bengali.
Okk
Easternmost Indo-European language!
@@vatsalj7535 No
Because Assamese is spoken as a lingua franca between the Sino-Tibetan tribes of Assam since a long time, it sounds way different from other Indian languages even though it falls under the Indo-Aryan family.
So though Bengali and Assamese are twin sister but different pronunciation.
Just wondering if you speak Assamese, and how well do you understand other Indo-Aryan languages.
@@Tidegast If it is an Eastern Indo-Aryan language, I can probably understand around 50-80% if the speaker is speaking slowly (also depends on how closely related that language is to Assamese). And for other Indo-Aryan languages, I can barely understand anything other than the numbers and basic greetings.
JAI ASSAMESE LANGUAGE I LOVE YOU MY MOTHER TOUNG ASSAMESE LANGUAGE🥺🥺🥺🥺
জয় আই অসম 🔥🇮🇳

@@shahriar_roky 🥴😵🥴😵
Sounds more austronesian than indo Aryan to me
😀
Love Assam from Tamilnadu❤️
Joi Aai Axom!
Assamese is lingua franca among non-Indo-European speakings mostly Tibeto-Burman tribes and Tai peoples (Ahom, Phake, Aiton, etc). Assamese also developped noun classifier in the grammar like Sino-Tibetan and Kra-Dai languages.
Fun fact about Assamese is that it has a sound "x" like in xat (seven) xoman (same) that most Indian languages doesn't have
The words like lora, zun and goru and similar word bathon for wind are also used in Garhwali
Bathon comes from sanskrit Root "Vaat"
I'm a Bengali, and I'm actually learning Assamese for more than a two years....
Assamese is the sister language of Bengali....so it always fascinated me
Joy Axom❤
Joy Bangla❤
Few words are similar with nepali ☺️👌🏼 moi tumaK bhal paau 🙂🇳🇵
sounds austroasiatic
It is an Indo European language
Yeah, and I as a Hindi speaker can only understand the numbers. I can understand words if there's a cognate for them in Assamese.
Guwahatir akhomiya bhakha aru Shivasagaror akhomiya bhakha bohut deference ase.
Apunar videot Guwahatir bhakha koise.
Shivasagar jilar akhomiya bhakhato best pure💯......!!!
As a Bangalee 🇧🇩, it's very easy to me to understand Assamese 😆
True
Hmm☺️........
কিন্তু বাংলায় 'x' এর উচ্চারণ এতো বেশি নেই 🥴😵
Lol আমি means ‘me’ in Bengali but ‘we’ in Assamese.
damn. I admire the beauty of this language script. it's funny to me how "dog" and "chicken" are (almost) the same. greetings from Bulgaria!
they are adding assamese to google translate
Yes.
@@islandsunset Odia is already in Google Translate
@@thegrassguy2871 they need Voice recognition is what they mean I think-
@@feliz5919 Assamese is now in Bing
As a Chittagonian, i found Chittgonian is more sisterly related to Axomia than Bengali 🙂
Nice video.🙂🙂🙂
Nagamese is close related to Assamese. 😁
As a Northwestern Indo-Aryan I absolutely don’t understand any thing except basic Numbers.
you mean bengali?
There are many bangladeshi/bengali who are claiming they understand or Assamese is intelligible to their dialects.Truth is none of the bengali understand Axomiya.Assamese use x retrox, which is absent in many indian languages.Bengali use aami, assamese use moi.Assamese use dewta, bengali use pit, pita.
I am Bengali from Bangladesh...And I have understood almost every word of Assamese language here.
And I could read because the script of Assamese and Bengali is the same
I was intrigued by those "nasal vowels"
Joi aai Axom🔥🔥
Western Kamrupi (Darjeeling) here. Understood everything 😬💚
Western kamrupi??
Kamatapuri?
It sounds like Bangla with a Vietnamese accent
I kind of understand some of it
As a bangladeshi Bengali i understand everything from writong script (as Bengali and assamese have the same script) and the assamese language is very similar to the dialects of Bengali spoken in eastern Bangladesh
Sylheti And Assami language r very similar ....
I'm surprised how similar it is to Bengali, I can understand quite a bit of it.
Its like syloti(nagri) language from bangladesh🇧🇩
Are there any Kra-Dai, Austroasiatic and Sino-Tibetan influences?
Yes, for example the velar or uvular fricative /x/ is said to be from influence of sino-tibetan languages and the merging of retroflex and dental into alveolar stops is also thought to be from influence of non Indo-Aryan languages of India i.e. the then prevalent languages of Brahmaputra valley before the arrival of Indo-Aryan speakers.
Yes. Infact 20-25% are taken from Tibeto-Burman languages
@@pvvttt8156 Also, the existence of naturally developed /z/ and /w/. Like, Hindi does have /z/, but it only occurs in loanwords.
As a Bengali speaker,I can understand 85% percent of it.
No u can't cz we Assamese have too many sub branchese like Kamrupiya, Guwalperiya, Borpetiya, Nalberiya etc N also upper Axomiya dhang u can't understand more than 0.6 % so don't say anything until u not confirmed ok Man hope u Understand my explanation.
@@JahnuDMick He can definitely understand a lot, being a Bengali speaker, (which is a closely related language). Especially in the written form became the words are very similar.
Wow Best video I've seen.
Wow I can understand Assam language. Iam from kurigram Bangladesh
Assam + Odisha + Bengal seems-/ Almost same-/ Maybe
Same as South Indian states, Sri Lanka-/ Maybe
Near border connection-/ Etc.-/ Also culture, behaviours, physical characteristics-/ Etc.-/ Link-/ Maybe
Please make a video on Marathi & Kannada languages, I can help you with this,...
I'm Bangladeshi from Chandpur.
Assamese sounds like chittainga (Chittagong regional language).
And sylhet people say it sound like them lol😭 I listen to the full video 2 time n I didn’t found no similarities with the way sylheti people talk & this sound like something Bengli but little bit different with pronunciation but we Chittagong people don’t talk like this but this is a lot similar with our bengli language for sure especially with the words they use we as bengli from Bangladeshi we use the same. BUT ASSAM PEOPLE DONT SOUND EXACTLY LIKE BENGLI … IS LIKE -URDU AND HINDI- BOTH GOT LOT SIMILARITIES WITH EACH OTHER BUT BANGAL SHUDDHO♥️ SOUND MORE CLEAN THEN ASSAM THAT FOR SURE
@@rhWah22 lmao ofc as a bengali person bengali will sound cleaner to you. I'm assamese and for me assamese sounds more natural and clean. Also urdu and hindi are basically the same language with slight persian/sanskrit influence besides the vastly different script. However bengali and assamese have much more difference compared to these two languages but the scripts are far more similar
Assamese being eastern Indian Language similar to Bengali(another eastern Indian Language)
@Saiyed Al Sahad Safa New yes you are right
@Papori Deka chakma is almost identical to Chittagonian Bengali.
What is the eastern most Indo-European language, Assamese or Chakma?
Best
Wow nice language and this voice🥰🥰from🇧🇩🇧🇩
Lots of similarities to the Bengali, especially the script
yea ofc only few letter differences in the script
Yes. As a Bengali, I can understand most of this.
Bangladeshi and Assame both languages are the languages of brilliance.
Is this thought of as a rare language in India?
Not quite. It's one of the official languages of the state of Assam, and has over 15 million native speakers.
No, it's one of the more well known ones
@@blazomancer thanks.
It has 22 million Speakers so nah
This language is similar to the people of Dinajpur in Bangladesh
Can someone say how to say plz in assames
'Onugroh kori' but we use that word very formally to be more respectful.
অনুগ্ৰহ কৰি . This is plz in Assamese
For please, Assamese adds -sun suffix after the imperative form of a verb. It makes the order polite, i.e, a request, though it's not as polite as the English word please which may mean "to beg", but -sun doesn't mean begging.
korasun = please do
ahasun = please come
diasun = please give
There's another term, onugroh kori, but only used in the literary language, not in the spoken one.
It fully similar to bengali
And Bengali is similar to Hindi. What's your point?
No u can't cz we Assamese have too many sub branchese like Kamrupiya, Guwalperiya, Borpetiya, Nalberiya etc N also upper Axomiya dhang u can't understand more than 0.6 % so don't say anything until u not confirmed ok Man hope u Understand my explanation.
I'm an Assamese
As a bengali it’s sounds like bangla if I couldn’t understand it
Being a Bengali, I understood 93%-95% of it. The R sound and especially S (X) sound is quite different. It's like a small baby is trying to speak Bengali but with a slightly different and childish pronunciation. 😅
it's like an american speaking bengali
Ha ha true!
That's probably because it doesn't have dental and retroflex plosives like Hindi. They merged into alveolar plosives, like /t/ and /d/ in English.
Sounds like a Thai/Lao speaking Bengali.
Like Basuki Tjahaja Purnama names

Sounds nothing like Sylheti and doesn’t even share anything in common with it
Brilliant language dialect.
It's so similar to the Kamrupi dialect of Bangla, part of the dialect continuum.
Its same as Bangla.
I understand Assamese Language though I live in Bangladesh.
অহমিয়া আর বাংলা একই ভাষা, আমি অহমিয়া ভাষা বুঝি। আমি বাংলাদেশী। 🇧🇩
This is 70% Bengali language,,
Love you assam.. From Bangladesh
You can not say that. If we say bengali is 50% Assamese, how would you feel? It is a distinct language.
dog and chicken both mentioned as kukur??
Assamese is what happens when Northeast India’s Tibeto-Burman tribes speak Bengali 🤣
Ami Assamese porte pari
It seems that, Assamese is not a language, it's a dialect of Bengali Language like Dhakaiya, Noakhailla, Syhleti etc
Get some facts. Read about the language and it's rich art, literature and culture. Then dare to say something like this.
yes it is a vulgar dialect of Bengali spoken by Tibeto-Burman migrants
