  • Disaster Avoided - Container Almost Flips During Recovery on Freeway! - This job was INTENSE! I obviously was not present during this job, which Alex and my dad worked together. It originally came in as a rollover in the day, but when we arrived, CHP told us they were going to let a private company handle it instead. Well they got it upright, but left it leaning bad and told the customer that's all they can do. We ended up being called back by CHP to fix this.
    Their first step was to secure the container so it wouldn't flip over. They tried to do this without blocking any lanes to keep traffic flowing freely while they worked this off to the side. Once it was time to take the container off the chassis, the weight from the shift combined with the steepness of the onramp pulled the turret on my dad's rotator. Luckily he had lightning quick reflexes and physically held the lever, then released pressure by dropping down with the boom so it rests on the corner of the chassis. This is dangerous work and just goes to show you even veterans in the industry and run into situations like this.
    I'm just glad no damage was done and nobody got hurt. They made the call to bring in my truck, Hulk, to help get the container off and on the ground. From here, they successfully counter leaned it, then safely put it on the Landoll for transport.
    Don't forget to head to www.pepestowla.com/shop after the video and grab your cool Pepe's swag to represent your favorite tow company!
    ►All footage was shot with Alex's GoPro and iPhone 14 Pro. I also edit my own footage using Davinci Resolve Studio.

    In Europe; that's illegal. When you start a job as tow company, you finish it. You can't leave and have CHP call another tow company to do the rest. You can however, get assistance from another tow company. But: that company bills you as responsible tow company. And you as responsible bill CHP. To avoid upselling; CHP demands a copy of the bill the assisting tow company sends to the responsible tow company as cc in the email. And your bank account can get checked for that as well. To avoid false book keeping.

    The shipper should have to pay for all this damage. God only knows what that thing weighs plus there was no dunnage to keep the load from shifting in transit. It’s a wonder this didn’t shift on the ship in rough seas. This piss poor loading happens more than you think. Caltrains needs to build a couple of scale houses right in the port and catch this shit before they hit the freeways.

      The spontaneous reaction to swing counter-clockwise most definitely saved the day. Activating the clockwise lever would have accelerated the momentum in the wrong direction and thus made it so much harder to stop it. The simultaneous lowering of the boom was just as important. • @joeacosta5011
      @joeacosta5011 Рік тому +5

      As the operator I have to evaluate and cross exam my game plan out there. First of all, truck should have been leveled off. Second, knowing I was gonna be swinging over the corner of my truck ( A rotator's weakest point !) I shouldn't have extended that far out. Third, because there were no shipping papers or manifest I had no way to accurately guesstimate the weight. Most 40' containers get loaded to about 48,000 lbs. YES ! I figured this load was easily 60,000 lbs. Lastly, that 1060 is an '05 but I don't blame the equipment. The proof is it held it once I countered the effect ( Thank God for that ! ). I guess this shows that in the salvage recovery business you sometimes only get 2 to 3 seconds to respond to an unanticipated probable disaster. Swinging in the opposite direction and lowering the boom came naturally to me this time.
