    My Cambodian friends mother use to make this all the time. It's really yummy!
    I love Cambodian fermented Cabbage with pig ears.

    Kop jai lai lai Nana! My father use to make this for me as a kid. I miss him so much! Som pak galum is my comfort food but they're so hard to find pre-made in stores, so thank you!

    Yes, the rice is cooked first before soaking.

    Yes, you can use any combination of green onion and cabbage. It's the same process. good luck and please share your result.

    The pig ears, feet, and other pig parts are added as a bonus by most Lao cooks, but it won't affect the taste of the pickled cabbage if you leave them out.

    I have always used sticky rice for pickling vegetables, and have never thought of trying using jasmine rice. Perhaps another viewer who has tried using jasmine rice will be able to answer this question for you.

    Pig ears are really quite the interesting experience of textures. Be brave and give it a try! If you do not like those combinations of textures, just pick them out and give them to your neighbor who will appreciate them. the resulting vegetable is going to be amazingly delicious.

    Nana I LOVE your recipes! I remember my grandma made this which is my favorite but she also made another but only using green onions! I would like to shock my family because they all go crazy when my grandma used to make Som green onions, is it the same process as this Som? Also can I do half cabbage and half green onions?

    jerrynorasing, I have never seen people put whole garlic in "som pak galum." I have seen pickled garlic on its own (gatiem dong).

    Oh I believe you, believe me I do. Pigs ears were one of my favorites but due to health risks I had to place that ingredient, among others, on that list that I can no longer consume. :(

      A. Ling I don't add garlic while picking the cabbage, but when serving the finished product, I sometimes top it with fresh sliced garlic.

      Rosie Rinthalukay yes, the pork ears are cooked. At 1:08 the note may be covered by ads. The ears are boiled in salt water for about 1 hour.
