  • The Royal Navy’s newest Astute-class submarine HMS Anson has completed what a submarine should do - submerge - for the first time.
    The fifth Astute-class vessel - valued at £1.3 billion in power and state-of-the-art underwater naval technology - has successfully made its first dive safely at dock at Barrow. The Royal Navy's next attack submarine is one step closer to entering service after completing a major milestone.
    The Astute-class submarines are the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarines ever operated by the Royal Navy, combining world-leading sensors, design and weaponry in one multipurpose vessel.

    4 same Astute class in service already. Proud RN tradition. Keep in mind UK will also supply nuclear subs to Australia per agreement.

      I don’t think that they will supply the nuclear subs as such, but the UK will share some of the designs and technology that it uses to build its subs. Barrow, the only place in the UK they builds nuclear subs, simply doesn’t have the capacity to build the submarines of the Dreadnought class and then submarines for the Australian navy.

      Not really as they're only 50% longer, but it will be a juggling act of unit moves whilst in build, planning all that is a skilled and unappreciated job...

    Even though I have seen this boat hundreds of times, I always make a point of looking at her when I go over the bridge seen in the video as I am always impressed by the skill and hard work they has gone into building her.

      Working on the basis of the rule of 3 (1 operational; 1 in Maintenance / Refit; 1 in Training) and that Sub-surface ASW should be a top priority for the RN, given the UK’s proximity to the North Atlantic. I feel that 24 Attack SSNs should have been procured, therefore allowing the RN to specialise in Undersea ASW. This is instead of the RN trying to dabble in the entire spectrum of the Naval Maritime Domain, with what is, quite frankly, a ridiculously inadequate defence budget! Particularly in the case of trying to perform the full Carrier Strike Mission, whilst depleting our Amphibious Assault and Landing capability.

    • @gusgone4527
      @gusgone4527 2 роки тому +1

      @@nathanielwhite8769 Although I agree with the need to increase the British defence budget. (Should be minimum 10% GDP + the entire overseas aid budget.) Reducing the multirole flexibility of the RN would be a serious mistake. Two carriers are vital. In this uncertain world, there is no guarantee that todays allies will not become tomorrow's enemies. We have a duty to support Australia, Canada and the rest of Her Majesty's Commonwealth while protecting our shipping lanes. Meaning more submarines, destroyers and frigates. In addition to dedicated amphibious assault vessels. British merchant and ferry designs need to be dual role, capable of more military functions as and when required. Similar to the ChiCom concept but more enhanced.
      Currently, both the RAF and British Army are suffering due to the disproportionate monies being spent on the Royal Navy. That needs to change, quickly! With purchases of more Typhoons and F35 A and B. In addition to a third type of cheaper light multirole aircraft similar to the SAAB Gripen E and F to replace BAE Hawk. Preferably a completely new BAE design.
      A new MBT/IFV production/maintenance facility is required for the Army too. Working with the USA on their optionally manned MBT project is likely to result in a favourable outcome for both nations. In technical enhancement and per unit cost reductions. British requirement would be in excess of 300 manned MBT's plus many "derivatives."
