  • I've been out of action with a knackered knee for the last few weeks so I was itching to test out a new piece of kit I have on loan from Hikmicro. Finding wildlife can be a real challenge sometimes and so after Hikmicro loaned me one of their fantastic Lynx 2.0 Monoculars it was time to hit the woods to see what I could find. Join me for what turned out to be one of the most magical wildlife experiences I've ever had when I stumbled across a huge family of Red Foxes.

    Whilst cleaning my camera gear and sorting my memory cards, this was the perfect video to watch. Hang on 5 fox cubs, now 6. Just wait a flipping moment am I seeing 7 fox cubs.. This was just the most uplifting piece of footage I've seen for a very long time. You not only inspire others, you also bring so much joy. Well done matey. And then near the end you counted even more...

    Definitely two different litters.
    That heat sensor is a useful bit of kit but at over a thousand pounds its kind of a pricey way to hone one's observational skills.
    I fear that successful wildlife photography is slowly becoming the realm of the wealthy.
    Lovely session with those cubs. That is a beautiful old Welsh oak woodland. So typical of how most of the valleys in Wales used to be before the march of industrialisation.
    Great images.
    Take care of those knees, once they are shot, life becomes a lot different....... I know ☹️
    Best wishes.

    Great video as always Simon. I took a look on the thermal scope website and as you mentioned...hunting. A story about how to get into foxing and it wasn't photography. How anyone can kill such a beautiful creature is sickening. I live in the countryside and seeing one is a rare treat.

Top work and a great bit of kit for sure, this fieldcraft is becoming easier these days, lol... We had them back in the day when I was in the Navy and there were as big as a portable TV, lol... Good bit of kit and worth the money, looks like amazing quality. Nice one, see you in the next one. Rich 👊

    I recently moved from countryside to suburbs and now have foxs, deer and all kinds of birds all around me. We have 4 foxes in the front garden most nights. Shocked me how barren british countryside is. Its not nature at all. Its just farmers / hunters killing everything and making it all look the same. Such a shame.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  4 місяці тому

      Its a shame but it can seem that way some times. A lot of farmers are getting more on board with conservation but for some there are two types of animal ( livestock and vermin). Hopefully attitudes can be changed 🤞🏼

    Got to agree ref camo i was taking pictures of woodpecker nesting at walton on the hill, i was on the floor next to a tree with camo on both me and my gear and i could hear this snorting to my left so looked left without moving my head and this stag was a couple of feet away could not take pics as using 150-600 sigma so any movement he was gonna go i froze for about a minute he got a scent xand off he went belowing and bounding through the bracken

    I’ve been looking at thermal monoculars as have wanted to get one for a while & this is by far the best video on that subject I’ve come across & you’ve sold me!
    As you said you wouldn’t have been able to scout that spot without the thermal monocular & it just outlined their importance as being in the kit bag for any wildlife photographer.
    I really like the look of the Hikmicro Lynx LH25 2.0 & am hoping you include it going forward in future videos.
    The images were fantastic but again that was down to being in the right place which was again down to the monocular.
    You made a great point in as much that to date thermal monoculars have been trained on the shooting & hunting markets but hopefully after watching your video will steer them into the wildlife market.
    I heard a nice saying; Wildlife photography is like hunting, you must have the same instincts as a hunter, but without the desire to kill.
    It’s the hunt of angels, you trail, you track, you aim, then you fire, but instead of killing that animal a photographer makes it everlasting.

      @simoneardley  4 місяці тому +1

      Very true Mark, another good one, " Leave only footprints, only take photographs!" Theyre not an essential piece of kit but as you saw they can give you that one special moment that can lead to some once in a lifetime images that make the expenditure so worthwhile. Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. 👍🏼👀

Field craft is the key and you are spot on with the cammo. Ive had Red Deer nearly trample on me because concealment was so good. No photos though because he was too close. FANTASTIC! been watching your vlogs since you started. You were good then, but now! Your video's are professional wildlife documentaries. I've not got the ability or the confidence to do a UA-cam video. And the work involved and keep finding different content to film must be so time consuming. The comment you made about finding your own wildlife, is so true. My best photos have been of wildlife I've found myself. I also love doing the field work to find it. And the thermal monocular. I'm going to buy one👍. Keep up the great work Simon, I look forward to the episodes. Hope the knee heals up well 👍

    Nice video. I am currently waiting to receive my HikMicro 10, so I am glad you think it's a good brand. 7:45 I 100 percent agree on the error of them focussing so much on hunting. Certainly in the UK, the most likely use for thermal scopes would be wildlife watching, not hunting.

    Morning Simon, can I just say I thoroughly enjoyed what I believe to be one of the best ones you’ve done to date !!! And I make you absolutely spot on when it comes to to finding your own subjects and how to approach and how important the right concealment is to achieving your goal, is without doubt the difference between success and failure. But even more important than the results is that your subject whatever that may be is either completely unaware of your presence, thus behaving in a completely natural manner or even if they are aware of your presence you don’t represent danger or a threat as in you don’t represent the human form.
    You’re a man after my own heart in your approach and your passion for doing it your way and the right way.
    All the best
    Paul x

    Fabulous film Simon, and I agree with your thoughts on thermal scopes, you don’t ‘need’ but since my wife bought me one for Christmas I’ve got shots I otherwise wouldn’t have. First time out I got deer, then Goldcrests, even kingfishers. I have the HIKMICRO FH25. This has 1X, 2X, 4X and 8X. I rarely use anything other than 1X which is about 200% of what the eyes sees. It can struggle to pick out small birds in the canopy against the sky, but can easily pick out a Wren at 25m low down. It takes a bit of practice to recognise a target versus just a reflection or something warmed by the sun. Also the image being 2D gives no depth perception. My wife was looking up into a tree and said there’s something large up there like a nest (it was the sun). Just takes a bit of practice. If you are thinking about one then do your research.

    Nice Simon. I bought a lynx pro 25mm after watching your long eared owl video.
    I still can't find my local one lol. So many woods around the area I last saw it and alot are private woods.
    I bought this make after research which seemed to point they have a low returns for issues.
    Even better with yours you can change batteries. I can't being a sealed unit 😭
    They have come down In price so much as well if. Double 😭
    Do this Simon. Write a message with your finger tip on a door or laminate floor etc. get the missus to read what you write with the scope. Pretty cool as you can see what you write from the heat from your finger
    Be careful what you write. Lol.

Lovely bit of kit but pretty pricey, i bought a set of Nightfox Vulpes bino’s, reasonably priced and as you say, these things just give you an edge to an oppotunity that may otherwise be missed.
