Instead of a ball joint separator or pickle fork(I’m poor and stores closed rn), I used a big file and the jack to apply leverage. All you need is a little constant pressure on the top of the ball joint bolt and then repeatedly hit the casing with a hammer. (My file broke off at the end first time, so I applied less pressure second time and kept banging and then gave jack a little more pump, and alternated back and forth.)
Is it easier to replace the control arms and ball joints at the same time? Is there a control arm video for this? Is there a particular order if I were to replace both control arms and ball joints?
what if the lower ball joint doesnt have them 3 nuts do you just have to replace whole lower control arm with ball joint already attached to control arm?
If you notice this video gets paused before the new ball joint is installed. That is because it is nearly impossible to install using this method . At first this video gave me confidence but after changing it like this it was definitely very difficult without removing the knuckle
If you are going to do this at home in your garage or driveway, start spraying the fasteners with penetrant daily for a few days prior to the job. Kudos to Honda for the bolt-on design. But the upward-facing castle nut is questionable.
@@1AAuto Actually, when I went to do the job, I ended up using a pickle fork to separate the ball joint because in order to fit the tines of the lower part of my ball joint separator in, I would have needed to remove all of the braking components including the dust shield. A lot of mechanics will scoff at the idea of a pickle fork but I contend that if there is no plan to reuse the thing being separated, it is the fastest and most reliable way the separate the joint.
I'm using an oem ball joint separator (27308) for my 06 civic si and it's not fitting as easily due to the axle. Is there a particular ball joint separator you are using?
im having a problem having the brake drum closer to the control arm so i can connect it. i had two people trying to push and pull these two together but there's just not enough leeway any suggestions please!
@@1AAuto i have a 2007 Honda Civic LX 4 door 1.8L.. im using DuraLast 104500069 lower ball joint. It seems to come with a "locking nut" instead of cotter pin and caste nut. When i try to tighten the nut its all loose.. the joint spins when i tighten so its impossible to tighten the nut. Is there anything i can do?

I recommend using a cheap pickle fork for the ball joint removal, i rented out a similar seperator as the video and it wouldn't fit all the way. but pickle fork worked fine.

Just tighten it to 45 ft lb and you should be good

I agree. It's possible but very difficult to reinstall. Definitely a 2 person job.

+camram You should not have to get a front end alignment performed if you are just replacing the lower ball joints.

No the ball joint is it's own piece that unbolts from the lower control arm. Awesome design by Honda makes it easy.

Should the ball joint not be dismantled from the lca before using the ball joint separator?
It's $50 for a new ball joint or $80 for the entire LCA and Ball Joint. So I just replaced the entire thing. Both sides. 2012
