    Waaaaaay back in 1996 my husband and I bought a little 10x16 shed kit to convert to a cabin. We had bought 5 acres recreation property a few years before, it had no electricity, and a steep sketch road in. The shed kit was perfect because all the boards were pre cut, was easier to bring in and just had to be assembled. We added windows, a strong foundation base with a 4’ front deck and got it all up in about 3 weeks. That winter our cabin property got a record snow fall, and turns out… the shed kit roof wasn’t Streep or strong enough. Snow flattened the roof and spread the walls. So the following summer we pulled in the walls, put a steeper roof on and covered the 10x4 front deck area. It was a disaster that turned into a blessing, cause the steeper roof meant we could add a loft. 27 years later a lot has change, and been added on and we’ve developed more building skills and experience along the way, and we’ve been able to bring our kids along on the journey. Which is priceless of course.
    All that to say, 27 years ago people though we were preeettyy weird for turning a shed into a cabin. Now we’re Cool! 😆. I do have a small channel and hope to film our shed cabin journey sometime soon.

    They are really starting to make these "sheds" look more and more like actual tiny homes. I mean for crying out loud, a lot these that I'm seeing actually have a second story with windows at the top and even a porch. What normal shed looks like that? It's almost as if the manufacturers are doing this knowing that more people will try to buy them up for the intended purposes of converting them into actual livable homes while still trying to hide behind the "shed" label. It's such a sly idea. But it works.

    • @CrimFerret
      @CrimFerret 7 місяців тому +12

      That's because a lot of them aren't intended to be used as sheds. You're basically buying a dried in house shell. They can't call them that for liability reasons. In this case, the framing actually looks pretty well done with double thickness wall headers and properly sized and supported roof trusses.

      It gets around local property laws? Because in a normal residential neighborhood you can’t put another house behind an already small sectioned piece of land for a house and garage. They wouldn’t allow it. But if it’s a “shed”…

    Build on a concrete slab. You will not have to be concerned about rodents or floor rot over the years. A better insulation factor. The few extra dollars will certainly be worth it. Plus new home buyers will have greater confidence in buying that home. Because not many people like the idea of getting up underneath trying to locate floor rot when they go to buy a home. Then there is also the idea of the home being built better on a solid foundation. Where the home can withstand high and strong wind resistance. Because it is bolted to the concrete foundation. Concrete today has become much more affordable because of pump trucks and other innovative solutions. If you have a lot of time on your hands you can always rent a mixer and do it yourself. Make sure you get help on how to place bolts in concrete. There are many inexpensive methods today.

      Just want to add that if you don't know how to place anchor bolts in concrete or you put them in the wrong spot. You can always use "RedHead Anchors" as a backup solution too. Just wanted to let people know there are other ways. I work construction and we use redheads sometimes when we forget or didn't have it planned out accordingly and inspectors don't care/mind that. Basically drill a hole in the concrete, hammer the redhead in the hole and the redhead will anchor itself down but won't come out. It's a one way ticket basically.

      A slab is a big expense for someone trying to get a tiny house together on the cheap, just saying. Also if you live in the desert, rot,termites or ground subsidence is not a issue.

    Having a professions run electric($5,000), water($3,000), insulation($2,000), drywall($1,000), flooring/carpet($3,000), AND having city electric($4,000), water($1,000)/sewer($2,000), permits/inspections($4,000) and these are lower-mid range costs. So not counting the physical building, hvac, furniture, driveway, land, insurance, property taxes, etc. you could spend $25,000. Add in everything and I could see the price climb to $60,000-80,000.

    • @BetterTogetherLife

      @@BetterTogetherLife well if we're doing a relative comparison to "any home" we should consider homes of all types in the price range. Do standard home loans work with tiny homes built from a shed, or would we need to take out a personal loan with higher interest rate? I guess if you had 60-80k saved you could spend it. What type of rules are their for fire exits/windows? I think buying an older home at the same price might be more realistic. Great video I just wish the costs were more upfront in videos like this

    You can build a 24x24 post and beam timber frame skillion cottage with 3 loft rooms for that price. In about 2 weeks. It wouldn't fit down our 2 track though. And the mice and communist red squirrels would have a nice home in it.

      I used to do construction and after calculating material costs, I was glad to pay UPB to build my cabin. They buy material in bulk and can get it way cheaper than an individual. It's very solid and looks great and only took about 3 weeks from ordering to delivery.
      That said, I will probably build most of the other buildings on my homestead, but am glad to stay in my pre-built cabin.

    Wait Wait Wait.. You Still have one of these at one of Your Stores in Your State/Town???? WTF? Lowes and Home Depot, STOPPED Selling these and can't even Find them on their Sites... Even the Two Story Barn Looking ones are Gone! Or 0:24 Both are No Longer Available! And Then Right before they Stopped Selling them They Doubled In Price!
    Both Having to be Built On Site... Or that what I was Told before they Stopped Selling them. And I was Saving Up to do the one on the Right, the "New Day Classic Manor" but a 16x24. They stopped that one First.. Then the Barn One... And You Found one just a Few Days ago??? This video being two days old of me watching and posting this... HOW? Or is this OLD Footage of these? Because to have a Company come build one that is a Duplicate of these, they will now Cost around $30,000plus and No Longer between $16,000-$24,000... And that's just for a Closed in Frame, just like these are...

    Yeah, I needed a shed once, so I went to Loews Depot Lots, and looked through their sheds on display in the parking lot, picked one out that was a good price, and then went inside to buy one.
    But they said they're not actually for sale and that I'd need to go to a shed dealer to buy a shed.
    So I knew where a shed dealer was in my area was and went there to buy a shed.

    you do not have to turn it into a two story house. you can put the top on the back side of the bottom half to make it a 32 x 20.
    make a bigger porch with long gated steps.
    you can make the roof top flat and slanted to one side.
    with additional wood you can make a nice back porch.

    Ok... You guys spent a bunch of time convincing us you are experienced with such prefab houses, but then you immediately went in and crapped the bed. What do you mean "I don't like these floors..." it's a subfloor. You put your padding and carpet over it, or hardwood floor, or tile, etc. Basically every second I get further into this video I can see that neither of you know your asses from a hammer.

    • @BetterTogetherLife
      @BetterTogetherLife  4 місяці тому +1

      We don’t! You’re right.
      We’ve just converted two of these buildings.
      And in terms of subfloor, Jesse. Are you telling me that there is only ONE type of subfloor??
      Come on now hammer man. There are good subfloors and then there are CHEAP subfloors.
      I prefer water proof, mold proof tyvek subfloors. Because I have first hand experience of it saving my “no hammer ass” when my fridge busted a leak and I hand to take up my LVP flooring…..and the floor was PERFECT.
      And yes, that event was also here on UA-cam.
