  • 1996 - Karl Watson, Lavar McBride, Mike York, Satva Leung, Karl Watson, Marcus McBride, Matt Pailes and a young Tony Trujillo.
Here's some lines at Pier 7 and Union Square.
I used to film skateboarding in San Francisco during the late 90s and early 2000s for 411VM, Thrasher, Transworld and many other skate companies. Will be posting clips from my VHS log tapes which I added onto every evening after a day's worth of filming. Good stuff mixed with some randomness.

Young millennial here born in 98' but the older era of skating hits and influences me way more than today's skaters. Please keep posting more footy that you have. Love to see more

The 90’s we’re the best so much style ! Lavar made it look so easy ! Him and his brother are highly underrated

It was absolutely about style. I skated all the 90s. In 90 in 91, street got technical so by 92 it got experimental. With emergence of late flips, flips in and out of ledge or kerb tricks. It's why there was a lot of low and slow skating. It was all new and being invented still, developed. Older tricks were dropped. Tricks where u took foot off board. No complys, boneless, etc. Then in 93 there was a backlash against overly technical skating. By 94 it became about pop and style. Keeping in a bit simple. U can see it reflected in vids. New deal 1281 in 91, to Eastern exposure vids in 94, 95.

Lavar makes me wanna skate, forget the current crop of pros, I look to the old era for motivation to go out and skate.

I met Lavar at the pier in late '97. He was just tic-tacing around doing frontside flip/switch frontside flip. I swear he did like 10 of these in a row and could never miss. Then he'd switch crook the ledge all perfect. He sold me Blind wheels for $10.

I was there when that footage of Tony was filmed at SR park. I think I hear myself saying, “yeah Tony”. That was the Benihana that got him on Concrete Jungle. At first I thought it was me along the fence when Tony was giving the, “how to”, but I realized it was Steven. The other two kids next to him in that clip are: Jessie Palmer and Gregg Sheryll. Crazy. I’ve got footage from that time too somewhere.

All tricks done today were done by 92. It's just by 94 the low and slow very technical period from 91 to 93 changed to a more simple trick choice but now done with pop and style. So skating has been like it is now since 93, maybe more 94. Check Eric Koston 101 parts from 93. Still stands up today. Now 31 years ago.
