At my first gig i was so hype that i started shaking and dancing like a possessed man... I entered in some kinda trance where i didnt cared about anything, i just wanted to keep playing music. It was at a friends birthday and all started screaming and jumping and going crazy. That changed me forever
Nice tips. I remember my first gig 20 years ago and i was sooo nervous that it was not fun, but after the second, third, etc it got a lot easier to relax, read the crowd and have fun playing music
My first gig was one of the most spiritual experiences I've ever done, I was very nervous especially when the crowd started dancing and losing it to my music but the thrill I got was unforgettable.
Very nice video, especially the bringing a couple of friends tip. Always helped me during a gig.
Hey TLM, not sure if you'll see this because the video is old, but I wanted to thank you for this. I'm playing my first gig in 2 weeks, at one of my fraternity's parties which usually bring in 250-300 people, and I've been freaking out about people noticing mistakes, and nobody dancing/reacting. Your videos, especially this one, have calmed me down so much, and made practicing my sets fun again. Gig will go smoother because of your vids, and now I'm more excited than nervous.
Thanks so much bro, keep doing what you're doing!
This tip are really useful.
I'm going to my first gig soon.
And these tip really give me more confidence.
Very good stuff. Thanks a lot for all the videos and tips, keep up the good work. Just had my first gig and everything went flawless and i already got invited for an other gig.
here's a few things i learned that i feel is worth concidering:
1. You will be nerveous and it's okay! Understand that being nerveous means that all your senses are extra sharp, you think faster and you are more focused on what you're doing and motivated to deliver the best performence you can do. Nerveous = good. as soon as you have played the first 2 3 tracks, you will not be as nerveous anymore.
2. If there are multiple djs playing: play your second best mixes or tracks at the start of the show, so the crowd notices you straight away. Save your best tracks and mixes for the end of your set, because the end of your set is what people will remember the best.
3. Prepare a playlist of music you expect to play at your gig and practice every single track, make sure the grid is on the beat, have cuepoints ready and know what tracks work togeather. Also try to remember struckture in the tracks you're using - it helps a lot to know when the hook is or just a place where you can bring a new track in.
4. Go out to events, concerts, clubs more and pay attention to other dj's or go listen to some live mixes on the internet - different music requires different techniques. I come from playing house and techno to now playing hip hop and it helped me a lot to see how other hip hop djs perform and also gave me a lot of inspiration. Talk to dj's if the time is appropriate and you might learn something or even do some networking.
5. Don't bite others, mixes and scratches!! :)
what do you think of it?
This is so good, seriously!! I have always given other beginners nearly the same tips and they include everything important in my opinion... thanks for sharing man!
every dj should watch these ,,,,,its very useful information in all manner
keep rocking---dj tlm-----
DJtlmtv ... great one! thanks for inspiring me to keep working as DJ w a lot passion! thanks a lot!
Perfect, this is why i love your channel. You choose to talk about topics that are often over looked when it comes to DJ tutorials. Plus you don't over kill, you chose 5 tips, basic tips but definitely the most important tips. Awesome video! I can agree with every tip here, and personally Confidence/Enjoyment in your mixing and Preparation were heavily important with me.
These tips are just as helpful for people who have experience as well! Dj TLM you are my DJ hero!!!!!
I remember my first club gig ,I was so nervous that I found mixing really hard, and wasn't flowing, then I just thought that I was at home doing it just for 10 minutes, and suddenly I found myself relaxing and mixing perfectly even when changing styles of music. So I guess my tip is just think your at home djing and you will be able to do a better job.
My first gig I practiced so much. I did some wordplay with some old underground construction records lol. I got booked like crazy. I was like 15.
My first ever gig was bad , really bad so bad I was told to stop half way through the night. Lots of lessons learnt though.
Love that you shared that! I have my first gig in less than 2 weeks and quite nervous. This actually made me feel better :)
dj Simon SHOW hey asshole why don't you tell us your mistakes you made so we can kinda I don't know "LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES "
Immensely helpful. I'm a guitar player, but a lot of these apply. Thank you for sharing.
Good tip there to bring a couple friends, and have fun! 👍🏽🎶🎶🎶
I had my first gig months ago ( 04 April ) and your tip nr2 ( be there early ) lol that was so me , I arrived there about an hour and a half earlier so I could be more prepared , also I had some playlists prepared but later I started freestyling , I admit I've done a few mistakes but actually nobody noticed them and as you said at the end I HAD A LOT FUN , thanks to your tips djTLMtv I'm havin a lot gigs in that lounge . Dream come true :)
I really enjoy watching the video where you talk about getting ready for your first gig I’m so excited I’m 39 years old but I’m hyped up man I know it’s comin soon thanks DJ HIGHPOWRED FROM FL
This translates surprisingly well to metal.... as a guitarist, these all apply very well
Quentin Arrigoni Yep, just change out different words and it retains its impact
Great to See you back on UA-cam DJ TLM one of the best DJ tutorial advice to all the up and coming DJ's they need to know the knowledge of this art and a life choice i have seen on the net and you say it just plain and simple . I have been DJ now for over 30yrs ( semi retired now but still do a show from time 2 time ) Hope you don't mind if I can do my top 5 of does 'n' don'ts for the first GIG
1 - No alcohol no drugs ( you will not get your next gig as you will be watched by the owner of the club or promoter and door staff )
2 - Your friends you take with you ( same as no1 - it is so easy to have a good time and get lost in the music, the fun and the enjoyment of the moment these people that you take with you on the guest list or pay at the door represent you and it is so easy for other clubber's in a new venue that you play at will wind them up to start trouble I have seen this been there and got the t-shirts so stay together have fun, your friends are there to support you. You the DJ it is your job for the future friends come and go ! .
3 - Smart dress politeness for all, and you will back to the venue again and again and again and many more over the next 20yrs
4 - Listen to DJ TLM he knows his stuff
5 - ENJOY This is what you want but you have to work very very hard but the results are worth it trust me when you DJ in front or a crowd 3000 + and their all looking at you with hands in the air you will never forget that for a long time to come and video as much as you can so you can learn from it and study it what you think you might have done wrong just like all the mix tapes you have done in the past and you will not regret it trust me...
Thanks TLM
Peace

The knowledge is alive as long as you keep making your video's Full Respect
Thanks for the video! I have my first gig in a club this Thursday so this video couldn't have been better timed !
Couldn't agree more! Wish I had seen this before my first gig; I was so nervous!
Always on point with the tips.. Been checking out your channel now for a while and its truly helpful. I would love it if you did a video demonstrating some techniques or trips that an up coming Dj can use while transitioning between songs and maybe how to double up on songs. As always keep the vids coming and continue to " share the knowledge. "
This just took away almost all of my nervousness. Thank you!
Your just somenthing else!!!!!
I couldnt advice it better....
The feeling is a unique experiance
I still remember my first gig long time ago, I know what yoyr talking about.
Thankss.
My first gig is tonight. Thank you so much for this video and the all the others that will help reduce my anxiety
Hey bro, great vid! Kinda wish I saw on July 3rd, but nonetheless, it confirms what I was feeling. Long story short, I had my first gig in front of a crowd of mostly strangers on July 4th. To top it off, it was a mixed crowd in terms of ages and musical preferences. The first couple of songs was nerve racking as I was trying to please everyone and keep the song selection clean. Somewhere in there, I hit that zone and had things going for 2 hours straight. Sure, I made some mistakes, but for the most part, I was the only one that noticed. All in all, I received several complements and it seemed most of the crowd had a great time. Next time I will incorporate your advice and put a few mixes together before had. I think that will really work if I have another gig with a crowd wanting different genres. (I pretty much auto mixed the genres I don't really listen to.)
DJ Onixx A mixed crowd can be tough. Just keep in mind that you can never please everyone with every song. Glad to hear it went well!
These tipps are actually perfect for *every* gig.
btw: i do not understand how anybody can give this (or any of your other videos) a thumbs down.
wasn't looking for a DJ first gig tutorial but this vid helped me a bit. Thanks.
Great job as always about the info you give bro! Also, love the way you started that video. Quick attention getter and then drop a clean transition right into the topic at hand...good stuff bro!
DJ TLM....I appreciate you brother. You 've help me and so many others in regards to the art form, mentoring and coaching others to follow their djing dream. Appreciate all the videos, support and knowledge. Thanks! Dj MellowMan
Thanx man! I'm from Russia and your video really helped me!
Thank you bro I've played a few places & I still get nervous but the grind must continue.....
Thanks for the tips. Just played my second gig last night and the nerves were getting to me!
Wow this does remind me of my first gig a couple years ago. My heart was beating like crazy, not because I was unsure of my skills. I was well practiced and knew my routine off the top of my head. I was more worried about EQUIPMENT FAILURE. Eventually it does happen to everyone though, no worries now..Good to have a some back up equipment just in case!!!
Marvin Charleston Yup, we all have to deal with technical difficulties sooner or later! :)
Appreciated.....thank you!!!!!
Thank you for the motivating video man!
I might have my first gig coming up soon and I will be part of 15 dj lineup.
Although some of your tips i already knew i still got something away from it :D
Love your vids. keep it up!
Really helpful ! Thank you very much for sharing the knowledge ,
Good luck to your career :)
Thanks a lot DjTLM!!!

thank you for this video! my nerves have calmed down now!
my first gig is coming soon and i think that this video is the key to the success! thanks 4 the vid!! and I will come back here when the gig is done!
txcci it went well! That minimix thing helped alot! And seeing couple of my friends in the crowd helped me staying cool!
But one thing was lil bit a pain in the ass... I was playing six hours!:D
***** yeah i know! It was some kind of teenage drinking party. It started at 8 and ended 2am at night. And somewhere at the midnight people started fighting and shit. I'm glad that I didn't get involved! But surprisingly it went good! Sorry for my English I'm from Finland😅😅
this helped me so much even though I'm playing at a house party with a few friends and I've literally never been to Party so I'm definitely gonna bring tons of friends to get the crowd hyped and I'm only 15 lol
Thanks Tlm!! This was very helpful😊
Damn, I love every single one of your videos! So helpful and well explained!
perfect tips bros you always give us the best
Brilliant Advice my brother.
once again great video, STK
great work.
I remeber my first gig was at bday party and I was using my friends equipment and i felt so nervous cause I didn't know his equipment well and I had about 10 minutes to learn the features and things on his deck and i felt so nervous I made abunch of mistakes I'd normally never make with my own equipment and i was super bummed I wasn't performing at the level I know I could perform at but the people at venue were nice and thanked me for coming in minute to say the day and they loved my track selection and i ended up meeting great connections thru that gig so I can agree that if u make a mistake just stay positive and know that it will all work out of u just believe in your self and always stay level headed.
I'm going to play my first gig soon and i find this very useful for me ! Thank u sir for the knowledge you share :) i'm a huge fan and you're my inspiration. I pratice everyday and sometime it get really tired you know .. When that happened i'm always watch all your vids and then i feel ok cause i know i have best advice and knowledge from you so i can keep going forward and enjoy the moment :) thank you again and i'll make sure i do my best to cross our road some day !!
P/s : sorry for my english :(
thanks buddy ,its great tip i have ever had!
man..you are simply the best..!
Extremely good Tips!!!
Thanks a lot
Another tip if the music cuts out just start singing something like sweet Caroline keeping the crowd going why you sort out the issue with the audio ( this happened to me on my first gig and this saved me so much)
haven't gotten any gigs yet. but I'm still in heavy practice mode. i was thinking about hosting my own venues by renting out halls and rocking them with theme styled parties to get my name out there asa rocker...great video ÷1
Perfect advice
Always great content from you!
thanks for the vids man ! helped me a lot !
I was so nervous before my first real club set that i did so much k that i nearly k holed, i didnt remember what i had prepared and just played the tracks that had titles that sounded familiar. The whole 4hour techno set i played was on point, the promoter to this day thanks me for that miracle and so many off my friends say that those were the most beautiful 4 hours of techno they ever heard.
I guess the moral off the story is that you shouldnt do ketamin preshow accepet you are an immortal god of techno like me :)
I have my first gig tonight!!! the nerves are starting to kick in
It went really well! My first couple of mixes were a bit shaky but after the first 10 minutes I settled in and started to have a ton of fun!
Thanks dude! Very helpful

By the way: Which MTV Music award did you win? Noticed the trophy in the background.
CiaT Brainpower (the MC I've been performing with for 17 years) won the 'best Dutch act' award at the 2002 MTV Europe Music Awards in Barcelona.
I see akg q701 headphones on your desk. Good choice man! :D
thanks! Gave me some confident to my first gig of 5 hours X)
Thanks for the video.Nice job ;)
Thanks so much for helping me 😅😎
also one reason to be there early on ur gig is to check out what the dj before you is playing
masthakillah187 Always! I hate it when DJ's play what the last DJ played 25 minutes earlier
I remember my cdjs went into emergency loop, i was freakin out! Luckily I had an aux cord and gave me time to reset one of the cdj's... whew
@@Gosimoka I never found the problem but I suspected it was the USBs so I upgraded to Corsair Voyager GTX and never had a problem again!
yo, thanks for the tips i really need 'em. im playing for the first time in about a week and now im prepared and practised so thanks but do you already know some tips for when at the party theres a whole diffrent set then you practised with?
hey djtlm when are you gonna upload a video on how to mix songs with big bpm difference?
thanks :)
Nikos mn I'll make a short video this week and the longer version will be part of the mix tutorial series
ok djtlm thank
ill share your video to group for djs on facebook named djunkies.gr so all of them can learn from you
peace :)
welcome back
Thnx bruh this help a lot
Awesome tips and like to dislike ratio. Killing it
I'm a really new dj but I'm already thinking about the future. How much time do you have from when you book the gig to when it happens
That can be different every time. Some of my bookings I know months in advance, but sometimes it's a last minute booking and I might know a day or two before the gig :)
Hey DJTLM! Do you know what to do in case the crowd isn't reacting positive to your music or no one is dancing to your music?
Hey DJ TLM I got a question what is the best way to add my old vinyl into my Serato library
Kevin Young There isn't a real easy way. You will have to play every song from vinyl and record them on your computer. There are special usb turntables, but I just use my 'normal' DJ set. My mixer is connected to my external audio interface and I record the tracks with Audacity or Cubase
Yo Dj TLM i have a question and i hope you could help me. I am a 15 year old dj/producer. I had some gigs at houseparty's but nothing special yet but i have been trying to get some gigs at real party communitys but not such luck yet. Do you have any tips how to get in the real bussinnes ( and i dont think its possible for me to get a gig at a real club in front of grown ups cause they wont really need me there :/) ill thank you already! ( sorry for my bad english ) ;)
DJWHSIXXX Thanks for your question. I have a couple of links for you:

i had my first gig at a party and it went fairly well as i decided to go freestyle. i want to dj more parties but im only 15 years old... is it too early? or should i look for more gigs.
I love number 3 the most. :D
tell me something
do i need to bring my own equipment?
how to do the switch with the other dj?
thank you!
Here's something I want all you new DJs to carry with you the rest of your career, I also want to remind all the DJs with a little experience.
Throughout your career you will have lots of first gigs. Every time it is your first gig at any particular Bar/Club, that is a first gig. Each time you do a mobile event for a new client, that is a first gig. Your first Wedding reception, Your first Wedding Ceremony sound, Your first Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Your first Quinceanera, Your first 25/50th Wedding Anniversary. Your first Corporate Event, Your first School Dance, Hell, your first family reunion backyard barbeque. Treat each and every one of them as if it your first time DJing in front of anyone. Give these gigs the absolute professionalism and preparation they deserve. Treat each gig (especially the first time you do a particular style of gig) as your audition for the next gig. In fact, every gig you do is your audition for the next gig. You could actually have a later gig booked and the client of that gig attending your gig right now. If you do a poor job that client may cancel the contract for the future gig. You never know when the owner of another club is going to scout the competition to replace his resident DJ. You never know when a promoter is looking for new talent to add to his roster. You never know if that Bridesmaid or cousin is getting married in 8 months and hasn't booked a DJ yet. When you do a Sweet 16 how many 14/15 year olds are going to tell their parents "I want that DJ at my Sweet 16"? How many parents at that Sweet 16 are going to say "That DJ was really professional and the kids sure seemed to have fun, (You know, he didn't play offensive music in front of Grandma either)"? How many of those Sweet 16 or prom clients will remember you when they get married at 25 years old?
Yes, Have a blast performing your first gig. Have a major Large time. Just remember your professionalism and remember... this could be an audition to see if you will even play this same venue ever again. It could be the audition you don't know about that lands you a residency.
Herfmonster Very true. Every time I play at a new club/for a 'new' audience, it does feel like a first time. Of course I won't be as nervous because I know what I can do, but I do feel more pressure to put on a good show. Every gig could lead to more gigs
