Isolated by the collapse of the Sanibel Causeway, our cameras got onto the ground in Captiva Island for a first look at the damage there. Large homes that appear to have survived, on closer inspection you see the large extent of damage suffered on lower levels.

When my late wife was fighting breast cancer, we would break out the credit card and spend a few days at South Seas Plantation. This paradise gave us a break and helped get our mind off things for awhile. It is so sad to see the devastation! I will praying for everyone that was in the path of the storm. I am currently living on the Space Coast of Florida and did not suffer any damage. I know in time we can restore the beauty of Captiva and Sanibel Island!

@@reneecrenshaw7567 And an 85 yr old couple who do not know how to locate a shelter area? Not tech savvy. Family members all way up North? Friends all got wiped out also. You have to remember also that this storm was not suppose to hit this area. It changed at the last minute. Many had a false sense of security. My parents left. Got a hotel room for two days. That flooded. The third night they slept in their van (not a conversion van) Cold, wet and hungry. They left in a hurry so they didn't pack any food. Mom has heart problems, dad needs kidney dialysis every other day. Truthfully, I don't know how that works if shelters are in place BEFORE a hurricane hits? If so I am unaware of that.

when i was a boy in the early sixty's, we would drive down each summer to visit grandparents in Englewood. we would drive out to Sanibel and Captive islands and spend the day. just a sandy road down the middle with picnic tables scattered around. great shelling and swimming. this storm must have hit at high tide to produce such a storm surge.

      It was a very powerful Cat 4,almost a 5.
High tide has very little bearing on storm surge at that point.
      Offshore waves 30-40 feet.
Basically,on shore ,becomes open Gulf Of Mexico.

Find the video "Hurricane Andrew -- As it Happened" issued 1992, same year of the storm. It is utterly compelling. The boots on the ground were like no other then and since. It is on purpose. Media consolidation has resulted in a mockingbird press where these two hours were straight from WSVN, the local NBC Miami affiliate at the time, were not only tracking the storm with NOAA/NHC's Bob Sheets who was as genuine as genuine could be as was Brian Norcross, fired from this station for doing all the right things for the people of So. Florida broadcasting non-stop over the then analog airwaves where one could use a battery operated TV to see, predict, prepare. GW Bush saw to the end of analog into hideous digital that, compared to analog infrastructure, remains a dismal failure IMHO.

New requirements were put into effect following Andrew. However, it is not known whether these strict standards were made state law. One can have all the best materials but since most contractors use foreign, unskilled labor (Fl. is a right-to-work state meaning cheapness wins the day) and inspectors have their palms greased as does the Florida legislature infamous for their graft regarding the decades of shady developments sold at top dollar where problems are spotted from day one and getting said contractor or developer to make good -- welcome to the real estate racket called Florida. One of the best references on corruption in Florida politics was written by Miami Herald columnist and author Carl Hiaasen when the Herald was owned by Knight Ridder, the only paper to expose GW Bush's claims Iraq had WMD were utterly false. Soon the paper was bought out and now it's more mockingbird press.

The storm surge barrier wall totally failed and saving money by using the small sound sand bars as miniature islands for the roadway major mistakes.
They must remove all the submerged asphalt, exposed asphalt and rebuild a new elevated causeway bridge system the entire length from FT Meyers Beach to Sanibel Island.
The massive environmental cleanup is going to take years, the local shrimp and other fishing industry in the area destroyed for years as the water and land are deeply contaminated with oil, tar, diesel, fiber glass, asbestos, lead, pesticides, gasoline, glass, metal, PCBs, chemicals, latex, plastics, etc.

When Nixon destroyed the gold standard, all Hell broke loose. The governors were put in place to protect the real estate developers who cut corners at every chance, developing in areas that should never have been including here and every beach community along the entire coast east and west. It's not the native Floridians who are backwoods. It's the transplants running away from situations they chose to do nothing about, overpaying for unresearched, shoddily built, bloated, all the bells and whistles dog pile that smart people know is just an accident waiting to happen. Too many people in this state, period. Who told you hurricanes would get more frequent and stronger? This year was the quietest year yet for storms... the issue is this is an area that is prone to flooding and was on the bad side of the hurricane. The storm surge is what caused all this. The wind was violent and bad, but most concrete houses can withstand it no problem - if built properly. The water is what does the most damage and is most life threatening.

@@SerPurple51 Predictions of a changing climate from climate scientists indicate that the storms will grow worse in future and that the coastline will shrink due to the effects of permanent sea level rise and higher rising tides. This is already true for numerous island areas worldwide. I am guessing that insurance costs and rebuilding costs will increase, as well. I am not contradicting your detailed appraisal of the worst specific causes of the current Florida coastal damage. You don’t state that you are anti climate change - although plenty of people are: you could simply be saying “same old same old; different wind, different storm approach”.🤷‍♀️

It will never recover. The new financial system won't cover these people's losses and I guarantee most were without proper insurance. Because they're dummies who move to Florida going into hock beyond their eyeballs for "the Florida lifestyle" of this stuff. Real Floridians don't live near the beaches or have decades of experience with the waterways and know what to do well ahead of time. They aren't weighed down with giant pool homes in BS developments that should never exist in the first place. It's all gonna wash away to the sea. And not one word from Greta on this kind of environmental damage -- this massive waste washing out into the Gulf causing serious pollution. No. Kill us, eh, Greta? Don't go after the scams your benefactors run called the Florida real estate racket(s) where overpriced McMansions are built on sand where the banks are the real owners and racketeers to begin with. Carl Hiaasen many books and newspaper articles were scathing on the real estate rackets and small time, petty politicos and their tyrannical governments like City of Miami, Miami Springs and such. Same on the West Coast. Nothing's changed.

    • @TubelabCom

The Mucky Duck was completely buried in the sand by Charley in 2004. They dug it out, cleaned it up and it was fine. Much of Captiva and the other islands were trashed. South Seas resort was closed for almost two years.
I was born in Miami in the early 50's and lived in Florida until 2014. When my career ended, I could not afford to stay, so I moved North. We vacation in Florida once or twice a year during the off seasons when prices are lower. We spent a week in a time share condo in South Seas (beginning and end of video) right before Ian hit. Most of those fancy homes on the north end are indeed rentals, daily, weekly and some can be rented monthly in the off season. Most of the staff that we talked to in the resort and restaurants on Sanibel and Captiva cannot afford to live there. They take a group shuttle bus from Ft. Meyers every day to work adding up to 2 unpaid hours to their workday.
