OK everyone, I made the kind of mistake I hate: mistaking dresses. Blake Lively's dress is Versace, not Ralph Lauren. While preparing the video, I thought "humm... funny, that doesn't look like Ralph Lauren, they must have gotten really deep into the concept, to execute that kind of gown" but I somehow didn't check again. I apologize to the Versace team. Your gown is incredible. And thanks to the viewer who reported the mistake. Thousands of brains are so much better than one 💚
It's beautiful and design is extraordinary. Versace. Makes sense
Blake Lively's dress is so beautiful...love the design and material. It's so gorgeous on her. Thanks for your fun and interesting video!👸💐
How come you dont mention kim wearing marlyn monroe dress
Is that Yr stomach I can hear?
There were a number of people opting for 1960s-ish style that wouldn't necessarily have been out of bounds. In the US, there was what was considered a "second gilded age", and that was in the 1960s. It started when John F. Kennedy became president, & the very stylish Jacqueline Kennedy became First Lady.
I thought Kourtney Kardashian was totally off theme until you explained it in more detail! But given from the interviews, she had no idea why she was wearing it. Probably many of these celebrities don't care why theirs teams chose the clothes, they just show up
True, they’re looking at column inches and how much exposure they will get. Nikki Minage’s team could easily have quickly made a relevant fix as gossamer ‘bibs’ were often used to permit dangerously low décolletages in that era. She just wanted exposure (!!!!!!).
Her outfit was awful..looked like a DIY project
Right? I see it now. So much more creative than her sister. Original!
If it were me, I would be sending the designer pinterest boards and sketches. But of course I love clothes and history. Lol
KK Still off theme imo in that hideous Marylin Moore dress that only matches the cake. Her mom and KK didn't understand the assignment no matter how much you like and appreciate the family (meh) tacky ppl imo of course
The people who wore upcycled fabrics and garments deserve some credit too. I think that should be a met gala theme in the future.
I would absolutely love to see a Met Gala theme centered around making fashion out of discarded items... not just re-wearing a dress but the garment being constructed out of objects and items that get tossed aside... like water bottles or pizza boxes. The event would be forced to showcase a whole new range of designers outside the standard runway staples or force them to think outside their couture box.
@@Chaotic_Pixie Those pesky microplastics tho. I think the inspiration for upcycling came from Gaultier's show.
@@notverynotoriousg5674 the university I attended has been doing a charity runway for eco-awareness where all the items used to construct the garments were either items being thrown away, recycled, or fished out of Long Island Sound. They’ve been doing it for probably 20yrs or more. I know since I was in high school at least. It’s always amazing! Some seriously beautiful gowns have been made out of the unrecyclable plastic caps of water bottles and reclaimed fishing line from the sound.
One note about SJP's dress.....it was an homage to the first black female designer in the white house (Mary Todd Lincoln's dressmaker - Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley-a former slave)...puts it into political and historical perspective.
Thank you that's very interesting i didn't know the background to this dress.
I've seen a lot of reviews of the Met Gala outfits on UA-cam, but I think you are the first I've seen who really understood the theme and interpreted these outfits correctly within those parameters. Really well done, thank you!
Hear, hear!
We’ll done!❤️🇨🇦❤️
I completely agree with you.
My thoughts exactly.
Yes!!
The last two honorable mentions actually gave me chills; we always forget regular people also existed during that era. Thank you for highlighting some of the overlooked interpretations. This was a very succinct and well presented.
I think those two and Blake were my favorites
On a similar note to the two honorable mentions at the end, Quannah Chasinghorse brings the oft neglected Native American perspective, so her outfit may not have reflected the typical ideas of American gilded age but brought that twist to Native American fashion from that era. There is probably a lot of confusion between The US as a nation and native nations as separate sovereignties in the early 1900s, but there really is no America without considering native displacement.
Agreed but I also think the style of the dress itself --not the jewelry-- was too easily mistaken as a nod to the 1960s/1970s/1980s... especially given the color and the eyeshadow. I feel like a far more powerful statement could have been made if the silhouette of the 1880s had been embraced and paired with her traditional jewelry. I think the statement could have been INCREDIBLY powerful... instead she was reminiscent of a go-go dancer plopped into the 1980s obsession with blue eyeshadow.
Well put. We often forget that America, before it was America, was a land of many nations, each with its own unique culture and language.
Thank you: was coming here to say the same! She looked amazing, and in a really meaningful way. (She did at last year's Gala too.)
@@Chaotic_Pixie it was blue for the sky, so it was billowing.
Like turquoise is blue.
The jewelry is community and all the hands that make it , adorning her.
A lovely statement. And powerful.
I agree Quannah Chasinghorse was sensational
Riz Ahmed's take is my favourite of all. And Blake Lively's dress was extremely beautiful and inspired. 🥰
It was interesting to hear Riz Ahmed's reason for wearing that outfit, until i heard the explanation i hadn't a clue what he was doing - now i really admire his insightful stance!
So happy you mentioned Stromae, a Belgian artist. He is wearing a suit from his own collection Mosaert, designed by his wife! Greetings from Belgium. Groetjes!
I love him, he is such a nice creative soul. And his voice... so good!
NO WAY I didn't realise that his wife designed his outfit! I'm born and raised in Belgium and so proud to see him representing in his typically humble, creative, and inclusive style
Yes I was also so happy to see him - how beautiful he looked - i loved how his hair was done in a way that reflected both Victorian ladies style and elaborate braiding - it was so creative !
I didn't even know he was at the event, he is amazing! That is because media covered the celebrities who, as Justine said, scored a zero because they didn't even try to match the theme. I'm glad she skipped them and made this a more meaningful review.
Loved your review! Blake Lively stole the show for me. It was really cool to have the second dress depict the “patina” of copper when it oxidises, like the Statue of Liberty!
Yes! That is also my opinion! She won for me by far! I also loved her friendly and happy attitude.
And Ryan Reynolds watching her from a distance and applauding was GOALS!
The blue was both the oxidation of copper, but it is also the blue with the pattern of stars that is on the ceiling of Grand Central Station. (I have to confess that I'm a little shocked that she didn't rate a 5th star given both how on-point the dress was in terms of theme, but also how it magically captured one of the most important elements of New York's gilded age: the architecture.
While her dress was cool... very cool indeed... a true work of art... it felt like as soon as she undid the bustle, she'd lost everything that made the dress feel gilded age. Instead it became yet another beautiful, modern dress. It actually made me sad.
I kind of wish she kept a bit of bustle on her to still capture that gilded vibe, But still I can’t resist it is such a beautiful dress.
"talking about a time where there's a huge gap between the rich and the poor" Sounds familiar? And the irony of the richest and most famous among us to completely fail at a theme that reflect that time period...
Perfectly summed up 👍🏻
They embodied the gilded age without even knowing it. The 400 and the Vanderbilts were criticized for the excess of their balls in a time of economic disparity and social upheaval! The irony is strong this year.
@@twobluestripes in that case, virtually everyone was on theme if you think about it lol!
I really like the way that Justine review the MET in a more specific way (?) I feel that in a lot of reviews they're way to much personal "I don't like this person so I gonna just ignore her look" or something. Also you chose a very good variety of celebrities not just the popular ones, for example you're the first one that I saw talking about Maisie Williams and Stromae!
Justine is my go to person to watch met gala look review. She's on point and always explain things in detail.
Ravenna: Excellent observation, and comment…….👏🏻
Thom Browne was the star of the night imo, I don't know why so many of the people he dressed got looked over, especially Maisie. Elvira Lind and Oscar Isaac had a similar his and hers Thom Browne with Elvira in a tux and Oscar in a dress, I guess media couldn't figure out how to angle Oscar in a dress.
I always love hearing your reviews Justine! I especially liked Blake Lively, Emma Chamberlain and Nicola Coughlan's looks but I thought your mention of the disparity between rich / poor was so on point and well acknolowledged given we are experiencing the same in this era! Thank you as always for your thoughtful commentary and content! xx
The Met reflected their true feeling this year..."Let Them Eat Cake". With an erosion of a middle class, we are heading back to greater differences of wealth/poverty.
Maybe another perspective is it's a vehicle for artistic expression through people who can afford to pay the artists and craftspeople?
@@le13579 I agree! The Met should honor the workmanship/art. The designer gets mentioned, but the builders/sequins artists are anonymous. These are labor-intensive costumes, and The Met could feature some aspect of their craft.
I thought it was an ironic twist. They have to hold the gala to pay for the conservatorship of costume history, but they are pointing out how appalling the current gap between rich and poor is at the mo.
Also they pick this era just as the the whole black slavery history is in the limelight. Letting the celebs put their own foot in it. Those who blithely wore fancy dresses without seeing the political issues underlying it really show their true colours.
SJP, nails this with an homage to a freed-slave dress designer, Blake lively recreated the statue of liberty and shows off the aging of shiny materials, Men show up in gender breakthrough outfits....and then....KK...wears a famous dress said to be part of a seduction of a president... that doesn't fit her.....not of the era.....
FYI Gilded means gold leaf put over cheap materials. 😆
@@felicitygee381 Like KK trying to be classy..... Nice attempt but No, next.
Blake Lively in dramatic dress by Atelier Versace, was just stunning!
I usually don't like Atelier Versace, it looks like Nolan Miller's Dynasty aesthetic, but that gets a pass.
In my opinion, Emma Corwin's outfit was terrifically witty, beautifully executed, and perfect for the brief.
Yes!! Emma Corwin was super fun and super on theme!!
Oh yes, Emma Corrin's King of the Dudes had a lot of wit and panache!
I was kind of amazed it was Miu Miu, excellent job, it's really hard to have just enough restraint in the details and tailoring that it doesn't come across as a costume, like the hat and jacket are downplayed by the simple skirt and really handsome boots, the shoes where brilliant in and of themselves.
Someone should have You design their outfit for the next Met Gala, Justine. You clearly understand the the assignment could execute it well. ❤️
Bravo to those who provided a counterpoint to the lavishness of the time period. It is fun to see the glamour of that period interpreted for a modern age, but today I think we can't help but remember this wealth was made from the hard labor of others.
I'd like the think that was the point, I think the Met team were making a statement
Bad Bunny!!!!!! Literally my favorite of the night, his look combined men's walking coat with women's bicycling coat from the 1890s, absolutely amazing
What Bad Bunny is some personality? Who’s that?
@@RainbowSunshineRain he is a singer from Puerto Rico. And his outfit was designed to blend the typical outfits worn on the island in the guilded age. Totally on theme AND modern in its androgynous take on gender.
Thank you Justine.
I only watched because it's you. I simply cannot take these red carpets ceremonies seriously.
Honestly, for me, the favourite for this year was not any of the celebrities, but the reporter Genesis Suero. She was the one on the theme the most, in my opinion.
TRUE, GOT ME LOOKING...BETTER THAN EVERY ONE!
I was waiting for your review - and your never disappoint. I hate when it’s just about who’s the “prettiest” but not understanding the assignment. Thank you, Justine! ❤️
You always show a thoughtful, considered and knowledgeable perspective which I admire. Thank you 💜
This is the only piece of met gala related content I'm at all interested in - I feel like I actually learn things when I watch your videos!
Out of all the UA-camrs that posted videos reviewing the meta gala outfits, yours is like the only one that I trust because you actually gave thoughtful commentary about the looks…such as design details; outfit construction; designer ID; historical background, interpretation & significance. I enjoyed that you took an educational approach that showcased your fashion & design knowledge/profession instead of quickly bashing everything, which is the contrived and popular thing to do.
thanks a lot!
I have seen many fashion people on YT talk about the outfits and they are never really analytical and just focus more on glamour and if they like it, which never made sense to me. Liking something is very subjective. I always love your videos because you are so analytical and can view fashion without being subjective which allows me to form my own opinions at the end. I only understood the theme after watching this video. Keep them coming 🌈
Well said. Very few critics (in the noble and honorable sense of that analytical tradition and art form) today offer much. Everything is reduced to a like, a click or a swipe--making up one's mind about something without giving it consideration of any kind and simply responding with whatever it is that creates that first (after 4 seconds) impression.
You might enjoy the videos by Haute Le Mode then as well. He‘s very analytical as well and has a plethora of knowledge about designer houses.
@@e.w.4677 Thank you for the tip. Much appreciated. I will check that out.
I found a very interesting read, the employees of Condé Nast have formed a union and are trying to get the company to recognize them. So a lot of staffers, particularly of Vogue remarked that the sparkle from the MET Gala comes from their sweat. Extra long hours, underpaid labor, no recognition... It's kind of ironic that even though the theme comes from a 100 years ago, we aren't so far away from the same problems. Loved the video!
I don’t understand why vogue still exists. Anna wintour creates a toxic and narcissistic work culture.
This was the best critique of the met gala that I have seen yet. Far far above and beyond everything else
Thank you for this post, and your wonderful commentary! Fashion is so much fun with you conducting our view!
I had never watched an evaluation of Met Gala looks like this one! Merci Justine.
Your review are always the more relevant !! Thank you for your work 😌
Wow Justine, with your expert considerations & explanations of the history and techniques certain outfits made me emotional. Thank you!
Billie Eilish and Blake Lively are my favorite. Also, I just love how happy Blake Lively looked when they unfurled the green part of her dress. She looked so happy.
Such a well done video! I didn’t understand Kourtney Kardashian’s outfit at all until you explained it. My favorite outfit to look at is Blake Lively’s dress, but after listening to you, I find many of them really interesting.
I love your review. I think its nice to see the theme well explained, the history, and then how the outfits fit into the theme objectively :)
Thank you, the entire event and costumes make sense now. Please do this every year.
Brilliant commentary on the two last costumes. That gave me so much perspective. 😀
I love you ,Justine!
I watched several videos about Met Gala 2022 and your post is the best one.
You are so positive and explained in a short and plentiful video all the best features of the designs
So well done. I love hearing your insights on fashion and your commentary on this unique event.
Thanks for being so positive, I've wanted to watch someone review the dresses because I always love to hear people who know their stuff talk about the Met gala! Most of the people I saw were pretty negative for some reason, but I'm just here to have a good time man ^^'
I’m a subbie because you get things right. I like how you simply explain your criteria for judging and then you stay the course. Bravo (or brava) for your intelligent approach.
as always, I love your breakdown. thank you for sharing and educating us.
Thank you Justine. You bring forward what is missed in other reviews. I am educated for history and fashion. I appreciate the interpretation and design expertise now that you explained it so thoroughly.
Oh so nice to see your new video, Justine! Thank you! Very interesting review! Good to see so many "on theme" gents this year.
I really enjoyed your take on the Met Gala. I've only discovered it this year and am very interested in the purpose of it, what goes into making the costumes etc. Thank you for putting this together.
you are actually the most positive video I've seen on how accurate the outfits were. Most other fashion channels I watch tore them apart
Always look forward to seeing your thoughts on this every year Justine 😍
It is refreshing to have an objective description of the clothing. You are not star struck which is refreshing. I enjoy your channel. Claudia
Getting close to a million subscribers Justine! So happy for you! Xo's from Greece 💋❤️🇬🇷
I was waiting for your MetGala video to come out. I didn’t want to read anything under headlines or watch any other videos until I saw yours. Well worth the wait, and now I don’t need to read or see anything else. Thank you so much Justine for breaking down for us. Very enjoyable every the time.
Best review I've seen if the Gala. Thanks!!
Absolutely the best review of the Met Gala! Thank you for enlightening us on the ensemble’s that subtly referenced the era. 💯
Thank you for the explanations - it totally helped me to understand the many interpretations - this is also the first time I saw Cynthia’s look and the explanation of its point of view - Cheers 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
love, love, love this analysis - you hit everything from every lens - thank you for sharing your incredible view
As ever, your content is amazing and you present it with good grace, humour and authority.
Thank you for breaking this down. I have learned so much about fashion bc of you and appreciate it more than I ever did. I used to truly think it was frivolous, wasteful, impractical, and unnecessary bc I studied to be a scientist. And I used to think putting time into myself with fashion was silly. But since I started watching your channel I have turned 180 degrees. Thank you for that. Art matters. ❤️❤️
You are always amazing, your analysis to the point and we always learn from you!
your review videos are always so fun to watch! Thank you!
I was just waiting for your video Justine! Thank you for all the details and explanation. Loved it!
Very well researched, I learned a lot thanks to your profound knowledge in fashion history. Merci, fashion professor!💝
Thank you Justine for great review! Was big pleasure watch and listen your comments. My favorite Ms.Parker.
Thank you for the balanced view, I always look forward to your review as it's so much more informative.
You are so insightful. Thank you for pointing out the reality of the Gala during world events. The idea of presenting excellence is to show the artistic talents of our era. History and humankind aren't just about the very worst behaviors, but the best talents as well.
I love these videos so much. All the explanations and details given make them very interesting and educational. Thank you 🧡
best review ever! I'm ignorant about fashion really, but I could see how detailed, unbiased and well-informed your review is.
Thank you! I enjoyed hearing your comments and helped me better understand the theme.
The critic's job quite matches the splendour of the designers' work. Bravo!
Brilliant and you were on point in your choices and descriptions.
This was such a pleasure to watch, thank you! Your commentary always brings so much depth to what can often be thought of as a shallow subject: fashion. My favourite look was Blake Lively’s Versace gown. I love Versace for formal evening wear.
I am very new to this, but I really enjoyed your review. Especially the history behind. To me the MET gala was a “royal”waste of resources. Thank you Justine, for sharing your insight.
Love the time you chose to release new videos! Thank you!
Another amazing analysis! Always interesting!
Lovely review Justine, very interesting. Merci beaucoup!
Excellent presentation, Justine. Now I have a much clearer understanding of the Met Gala’s purpose.
Insightful commentary, Justine. As always. I love to hear what you have to say!
Very succinct review and top quality as always Justine. I think 2 guys that really smashed the theme and worth mentioning are:
1. Bad Bunny in Burberry (referenced late C19 sleeve shapes and did a nice gender blended look)
2. Ashton Sanders in Casablanca (referenced buffalo soldiers uniform but like very cool, modern and vampire twist which was sexy)
Thank you for your perspective on the Met Gala. On the one hand, I just like looking at the glamour but then it’s fun to see how the guests stuck to the theme. I like the last special mentions the best.
The gown that is reminiscent of copper is my absolute favorite. Thank you for your commentary Justine. If I ever need a gown for the gala, you're my designer. (if only)
A wonderful analysis as usual. Thank you, Justine.
Been waiting for this video as soon as I realised the gala was happening! Excellent run down as always
Thank you for your content - seriously, I learn SO much every time I watch one of your videos. :)
best review of the Met red carpet, thank you
Your video is always so well done. Thank you very much, Justine!
I really appreciated the political commentary of the last two outfits.
Thank you for the thoughtful review, Justine! ❤️
I always look forward to your review of the MET Gala every year. You explain the theme so well, so its easy to understand who achieved it and those who didn't
Oh thank you!
I love this yearly video. Thank you 💓
Always a real joy to hear your input. ❤
Have been waiting for your take 😃 thank you 🎉
A pleasure watching your videos!
Wonderful explanation and guidance! Thank you, very much!
Amazing video! so insightful and delightful!
The best met gala review! It’s really about who nailed the theme! 🙂
Wonderful job Justine!
Thank you so much for your round up. Really interesting and informative. X
I was waiting for this video! Thank you!
Thank you, Justine! Great as always! I didn't think Kourtney would be on the list and then you explained it in so detailedly.
Woo-hoo, I've been waiting for this video. It's always one of my favorites!
Look forward to your Met Gala commentary each year. Thank you 😊
So good as always!
