I wish people wouldn't post so many bigoted comments, the 'Fields of Athenry' is not a strictly 'Catholic' song and certainly not a terrorist one, for anyone who has actually listened properly to the words of the song, it's about the potato famine, in which thousands of people died. It's a very sad and also a very beautiful and moving song about a very important part of Ireland's history, which should be appreciated by EVERYONE!! And anyone who starts bringing bigotry into it and shouting the names of terrorist groups like the IRA, (let's be honest, they bombed and killed plenty of innocent people themselves and are no better than any other terrorist group ) It's just disrespecting the song and it's sickening and very sad because it's such a lovely, lovely song. Makes me cry every time I listen to it. My family on my mother's side had to flee Ireland many years ago and come over to Scotland (I'm Scottish myself) to escape hunger during the famine, and they were staunch Catholics and they were subjected to a lot of racism and prejudice. But they didn't feel the need to go around being hateful to people and twisting the words of beautiful traditional songs to suit their own bigotry. They had a hell of a time of things but - I've never once heard my family praise the IRA, because they don't condone hatred or violence in any form. Yes, Ok, so the British government and some of the soldiers were indeed very shitty to the Irish many years ago, there's no denying that. But that was a very looooooong time ago and we can't forever live in the past and be stuck there. Today, in 2018, there should be no place whatsoever for racism and bigotry in any form. We aren't living in the dark ages anymore so there's no need for people to act like Neanderthals
Well said. And I agree this sad ballad has been hijacked. But when i say "IRA" and "sein Fein" and "Fuck the crown" I don't literally mean it, nor do I mean any offence by it. its just something that has been added to the song, and its used in certain circumstances, personally I wouldn't those extra phrases at a rugby or soccer match, which falls in line with the overwhelming majority of people. But yes in some pubs when its belting out I do add in those phrases. Call it a poetic licence of some sort. But, what the IRA means to me, is Michael Collins leading a unite Ireland in a war against British rule. "an Army in pin stripe suits" gorilla war fare, and I'm very, very proud of that period In Irish history. The IRA you are referring to, i believe, is what spawned after, during " The Troubles". I do not respect, nor condone what they did in any way shape or form. 99% of the famous folk songs were written well before then. This song was written over 100 years before then. I have nothing against the British, they have contributed so much to this world, Had Ireland the means and opportunity, I have no doubt we'd have been a menace to the world too. Upon reading history, I'm glad it was the English who ruled us, The Spanish and Arabs that conquered country were far more brutal. In conclusion, I hear exactly where you are coming from, but I won't promise to not use those extra phrases again. Its Harmless banter to me.
everyone in entitled as you are to take what they want from this song. For me it was the English treating the Irish as inferior people. It’s all there in the lyrics.
@@garyodriscoll7988 I see it differently to you which is my choice. For me it was oppression by the English against the Irish. Even to this very day some British people look down their noses at the Irish.
Listened to it half a dozen times and cannot hear anyone shouting that. Another version of this song elsewhere had the same comment but again no chants were audible. Very strange.
@kevinovalentino thank you for you speech;however unneccessary..............i hear this week that Scottish National Party are finding it hard to find support for independence.....the popular opinion in England is one of indifference-come the day,you will all care for we made you care and speak about and lament IRELAND UNITED AND FREE
Here, I have a wee question, what's with the 'Hey, baby watch the free birds fly' ? lol! It doesn't bother me or anything, i'm just curious, coz I've seen people shout it quite a few times when I've been in an Irish bar and heard the song played. Anyone know why they do that? I've always wondered! lol! x
lindiloos hiya so we shout that just for the sake of shouting it mostly, it’s sung often in bars or at matches so people are fired up and I guess that’s how it started. It’s a really beautiful song about injustice related to Ireland’s history, look up the full lyrics cause i’m hoping people don’t overlook the significance of the words. Hope that helped a little!!! xx
@@Waywardmountain Yeah I know all the words to the song. Yes indeed an extremely poignant, moving and beautiful song. And about a very sad part of Ireland's history (and also Scotland's, because in the Highlands we suffered the famine too (albiet not to the same extent as Ireland), along with the 'clearances' ) The song basically describes the events of the potato famine for what they were, a deliberately orchestrated genocide by a racist British government. Very sad and tragic. 😢. But I always just wondered if they shouted the 'Hey baby' chant, was it to do with football, or about the history behind the song, or.. just for the hell of it when drunk? Lol! I always wondered! Anyways, very much for helping to clear up that wee query for me! 🙂 xx
@16dan90 the media in ireland has moved on , not allot of the people. If you have any legimimate questions as to why or any others in relation to this topic i will happily answer them for you my friend :).
