Fun fact: The main qualification for a vowel is to have an unobstructed airway. When you pronounce A, E, I, O, and U, both short and long forms, your airway is unobstructed. There is an argument that R is also a vowel, but only in English. When you pronounce R, both normal and Boston forms, your tongue comes up into your mouth but does not obstruct the airway. I thought it'd be a huge waste of time but turns out alot of parents seem to have forgotten their phonics sounds 🤣😅
Main language is Spanish getting into American english was a nightmare. Phonetics don’t work the same in Us English than the rest of the world. Our names for letters are the sounds. Here? This language is a mess.

As a person that English is not their language, it's so funny to see english native speakers struggling like everyone else.
Especially when your language (like spanish in my case) is a phonetic language: English makes no sense 😂😂😂
As someone whose English is also not their first language I was confused about how can someone spell "of" like "ove" when is a word used so much in English. But I guess I learned English in written form more than spoken form, unlike the people that learn it since they are babies.
But in Spanish two “L’s” say j, a j says h, and h says nothing… 😂
So still a bit off phonics but better than English.
And both better than French which I swear just makes stuff up. 😅
As a native English speaker... English is a nightmare! When I took Spanish in school I was startled at how easy it was to pronounce everything. I can't imagine starting with a normal language and then trying to learn English. I fear and respect your power for being able to conquer our shambling monstrosity of a language.

Fatga that one killed me, they went from confusion to accusation to a whole rabbit hole about their friendship. The first one, I agree with them regarding English but Chinese has like 40,000 characters doesn't it? I'm definitely not smart enough for that. I will stick with being confused by English and the one with the argument about the name.....aside from that particular argument, I can relate. I had to write a script for a 60-second tiktok, and then I had to use a filter, so you couldn't tell I was reading a script! Then I didn't even post it because it was supposed to be for a contest that ended that day. Well, it ended that day in a different time zone because when I tried to submit it, the site said I missed the deadline. That's when I learned that making videos was NOT going to be my thing!!!
You only need to know about 2.000 to understand Mandarin really well. The other ones are archaic characters nobody uses anymore, unless you want to translate classical Chinese (wenyan). And it you learn the radicals you basically get clues of what words mean. Every character with a little box on the left has to do with the mouth, because that is the radical for mouth. So eating, singing, drinking, shouting etc all have that same little box part in the character.
@EchoSappho but I'm used to only needing to know 26 lol. Even 2,000 seems INSANE! I'm sure it's nothing to the Chinese people who grew up with it, but WHEW still seems really insurmountable to me lol. Thanks for the information though. One of these days I might give it a try. It's definitely an interesting language.

As a former teacher I had to teach BIG kids how to read and the first problem was most of them knew the alphabet which doesn't help you to read you have to know the phonetic alphabet short hard sounds like c a t says cat etc once that is learnt its amazing how quickly reading grows. The vowel at the end of a word usually e changes the hard sound of the preceeding vowel to soft long sound ie: sit site. Ain't I boring 🇬🇧

I'm with him on the "z" sound for xylophone though. A 1st or 2nd grade teacher I had asked how to spell Xylophone and she said look it up in the dictionary (we actually were encouraged to use the dictionary, I learned well that way) BUT THE WOMAN SAID TO SOUND IT OUT AND I WAS LOOKING IN THE Z'S. I think I almost started crying from that.

When I was in college I had an English composition course. One of our text books listed a bunch of common grammar mistakes, one of which was "would of", instead of "would've". I was in disbelief because I'd never seen it before. But ever since then, I see it everywhere 😂
