  • Teardown of a filament LED lightbulb from Ebay for $1.50 including shipping. Rated 220V 50Hz, the nominal power is 2W, real power is cca 1.6W, it has a E14 screw base. It is quite bright and looks nice, but there's no fuse in it. There's also no filter capacitor, so it has a lot of 100Hz flicker (not visible to the human eye unless you move it fast). It has a capacitor dropper in it with a 330nF capacitor, 1M discharge resistor and 1k inrush resistor. The 330nF multi layer ceramic capacitor looks quite small for the mains voltage.

    They are COB LEDs. The factory probably has used old filament bulb machines and that’s why it is glass and has the old fashioned construction. I like these type of bulbs and I have changed almost all my home’s lights to LED. In this bulb there are no interferencies as there isn’t switching power supply and the construction is simple and cheap.

    I bought one of these lamps and it failed at something over 350V~ (I had a few fluorescent ballasts connected in series with the lamp - 3 paralleled 40W ballasts connected in series with the lamp in order to prevent damage to my variac if the lamp went short, so maybe the actual voltage across the lamp was a bit higher due to the ballasts forming an LC circuit with the capacitor inside the lamp), after a short period of time, the capacitor broke down and the LED strings burnt out.

    From the video it seems you're just guessing that the 1k resistor is on the secondary side, behind the rectifier. I would have guessed the same. But I agree with you that the other position is just as good for current limiting purposes, and better when also used as a fuse.

    I bought six of them in lidl, livarno brand in other variant, (various shape of bulb) warm white but only 4W/E27 4filament, 2W/E14 2filament all of them because they don't have more watts that year. Light was poorly weak and all lightbulb go wrong in few month.

    Thx for the teardown video. I do love these filamentary LED lamps. They have a great angular light distribution and simple circuitry.
    I read that the gas in the envelope is to dissipate the heat of the LED strip. Here is an excerpt from this US patent application.
    Gas cooled led lamp
    US 20130271972 A1
    A thermic constituent in addition to the gas can also be included. In some embodiments, the gas is at a pressure of from about 0.5 to about 10 atmospheres. In some embodiments, the gas is at a pressure of from about 0.8 to about 1.2 atmospheres. In some embodiments, the gas is at a pressure of about 2 atmospheres or about 3 atmospheres.
    In some embodiments, the gas in the enclosure has a thermal conductivity of at least 60 mW/m-K. In some embodiments, the gas in the enclosure has a thermal conductivity of at least 150 mW/m-K. In some embodiments, the gas is or includes helium. In some embodiments, the gas is or includes helium and hydrogen. In some embodiments, the gas includes a chlorofluorocarbon, a hydrochlorofluorocarbon, difluoromethane, pentafluoroethane or a combination of these gasses.

      I also was skeptical of LED filament bulbs after seeing all the weird SMD variations which always weighed a ton and died too early without ever meeting their lighting claims. But they work. I have had several running around the house now, and there has been no light output decrease, and if you get ones with capacitors on the bottom, then they do not strobe much or at all.
      Look at it this way, the new CFLs fail all the time due to one transistor being under rated. they are almost impossible to get apart and thus when they fail the mercury in them goes to a landfill. considering how popular CFLs are that is a huge amount of mercury. the old CFLs might have used more mercury, but some are still running to this day, so they have a much lower environmental impact.
      If you get these bulbs on ebay they are absurdly cheap and are extremely easy to get a refund on if they do not deliver. how can you lose?

    • @zx8401ztv
      @zx8401ztv 7 років тому +1

      Yes i agree :-D, i have a house full of folded flourescent ccfl bulbs, so far ive had only 2 fail in 5 years, but (and there allways is a but) i dont leave them on all the time lol.
      One was in my front room and it died, so i ripped it apart and replaced a known dodgy capacitor, all fine again :-).
      Led lights are getting better, early versions just didnt last, i think they used too few leds and over drove them, more leds driven at a lower level are better :-D

    I had a problem with some similar bulbs, with the E27 socket. Someone called me to replace some bulbs, I would replace them and the surprise was that they had light intensity drops, from time to time. I told him the bulbs were to blame, they did not have enough filtering. Bulbs were bought from a local supplier and, as the owner said, they were not cheap at all.
