I'm certainly not a meteorologist, but it seems likely that the wobble south probably kept the storm farther away from the cold front, which means less wind shear effecting the storm, which means a stronger storm at landfall.

The storm trended south into an existing storm becoming extra tropical while also avoiding some of the wind sheer. It should be a cat 3 right now but the lack of sheer affecting the eye wall has allowed it to remain a peak cat 4.
Eyewall is replacing itself. All we can hope for is this thing sheering and weakening and it pushing off land as soon as possible. Sounds worse but it is already at the worst… it just can’t stall or those sustained winds are trouble along with water/surge, etc.

A cat3 can snap trees, blow shingles from roofs or the roof. Plus, topple trees. I was in a Cat3 didn't know the impact new to the area. Absolutely frightening sounded like a freight train was going around the house. Wind and rain were coming from everywhere. Mass power outages and never again in life. It hit at night. My power never went out so I watched the entire thing on TV and looking out the window. In front of me pitch blackness. By morning the entire environment looked like a war zone. Cat4 or 5 you should have walked out if you couldn't drive. Plus, the rain and storm surge, running.

Fish for sure, sharks ive heard of, but I’ve never heard of or seen a dolphin or whale after one of these storms but I’ve also never had 15 feet so we will see.
I remember reading at a cyclone in Thailand or somewhere, that the animals all took for high ground before the storm. The people went to the beach to watch. Animals lived, people died

There is no model even at the National hurricane center that can predict landfall. And we've done nothing but sit here and watch them perform the idea that they can.
