I remember when the last Big Boy was retired, we all thought that was it. Happy to have lived long enough to see this magnificent machine return. UP has done themselves well!
No other engine has that soulful sound~♡~I was 4-5yrs old when started riding trains The B & O it was so powerful even when coming into the station I would hide so I wasn't knocked over~lol 1949-1952
The complexity in the engineering of this beautiful and unbelievably massive machine is nothing short of amazing, I can't even imagine the job the crew had to keep it running and working efficiently, again I say "nothing short of amazing"!! Thank you for sharing this video👍👍
And they took it all, all the way apart. Fixed or re-manufactured everything it needed to be like new, and put it all back together again! That's one step shy of a miracle!

Now we and our children can relive those glorious days of steam traction and imagine how the people of those days would have watched and marvelled at these giants .Thank you also to the people who financed this big project and the people who worked tirelessly to make this happen .

I do remember when the Big Boys would come through town at 100mph, they would rattle the dishes in the cupboard... That was before speed limits were talked about. I was born in the first half of the last century.
Willy Bee..... I'm afraid your perception of the rattled dishes (which I do Not doubt), and the Big Boys rolling through town "at 100mph" is a bit off. They were tested and certified by ALCO to be safe up to 80mph, but during their service life at UP, they were restricted to 55mph to maximize both safety and service life. With 68" drivers, a 100 mph would be a little tough to accomplish.
@@Romans--bo7br Just something to think about. If you drove your souped up Hennessey’s Venom F5 ( car ), into a coffee shop. And 4 state troopers came out to admire your car. And they asked you if you had it going over 100mph. Would you tell them if you did.?
@@nicholaslokos7949 We had double tracks 75 yards from our house. And a water tower, but not all would stop for water. A mail pit, where the mail bag would drop into. And a mail pick up stand , that the mail car would grab the bag on the fly. We had 6 on grade crossings in our town, and once or twice a year someone would stop the train with their car. But not as quickly as they would have liked. 😨😖😱
You have some great camera angles ... your videos really mean a lot to us who can only enjoy Big Boy from afar. I like your shots of the running gear towards the end. You can really see the ball jointed steam lines on the front engine. Thanks for being out there for us who can't travel the Wyoming landscape.

Actually both of those locomotives were really the ultimate in steam power when they were built. The Big Boy took the steam engine to it's limits in length, boiler pressure, height, and weight. Those really were the best engineered steam engines every built. It's good we can still see them run.
I love these 2 together! 4014 with her CHUGa chuga CHUGa chuga, followed immediately by 844's PSHHHT ha PSHHHT ha, it's beautiful to see these 2 beast together! (I'msorry you had to read that 😅)
Looks like the right side cylinder on 844 had a piston packing leak on this trip. Hopefully they get that repaired (since it makes the engine a lot less efficient). 4014 had one as well on its test run, but they fixed it some time last year.
They need to take 4014 west to Sacramento, back up into the CA state Railroad Museum, hook up SP 4294, sneak out, tow him back to Cheyenne and restore. We need a AC12 restored.
Great to see and hear a UP Big Boy running once again! Thanks for sharing! Now, if only a DM&IR Yellowstone and C&O Alleghany could be made operational as well.
Ahmen brother, C&O's Alleghany, Now there's a loco that needs to be brought back to life! It's such a shame to see such a beast just sitting. And they say she's still in pretty good shape. I wonder if anyone even has even thought about getting it restored to running condition?

Utah UPman..... I seriously doubt that flag direction is going to be changed, it's been "flying" in that direction on the water tenders behind the 844 and the 3985 for a Long time now.

I remember watching UP4018 arrive in Dallas in 1963 at Fair Park. It sat there for 50 years rotting away. It was moved to Frisco Texas in August of 2013 where she now sits in a static display. Wish they would re-build it but UP says she is too far gone for that!

They probably looked into each one and assessed the costs of shipping and repairs needed. Whoever has the shortest list of needs probably won the bid.

If I were a Billionaire I would restore all of the remaining Big Boys but Sadly I am your average guy working long hours to barely pay the bills!

I remember back in 2010 I was wishing one would be brought back to life, 9 years later wish came true!
Well before that we were still blessed to have 3985, but then 2010 came and it was taken out of service. Luckily 3985's overhaul is next!
