UPDATE BLACKPINK WILL BE HEADLINING COACHELLA 2023 Coachella was the first US concert for them ever. It's not a standard venu, so people are not coming specifically for BlackPink. And Jisoo was very sick, her back was so bad it was hard for her to move. So add that to the Members not being sure how big the crowd would be, or if anyone would come to see them. They thought it might be a VERY small crowd(a few hundred). They didn't need to worry it was THE STAGE of the whole weekend at Coachella.
with any Kpop group.. they all train for years with skills they need but after they debut, there's no telling how much success and how far they will go. Most groups that don't make it big disband after a couple of years. So at the beginning when you said they "knew" that they were going to be this big and popular is really not true. The company trained these groups "hoping" that they will make it big. I think with BlackPink, it was a surprised like Teddy said that they made it this far and this big. I thinks its also because they have such unique members and music style that made them who they are.
Of course, those who only support one member are Lilies, Jensetters, Fansés, Sooyas and there is nothing wrong as long as they respect others and only focus in the member that they are supporting, because we cannot force them to be fans all members, that's why each member has their fanbase, and the others solo stans that start to fight or insult and hate, they are akgaes

Also, I don't want to sound rude or anything, these are things that I noticed over the years, since I first joined the fandom in 2014. K-pop is an _industry_ , not a genre or a scene (when you think of a scene, you think of punk or hip hop, which they are a like cultures, rather than a massification or what is mainstream - generally). It's often used as an umbrella term to describe the whole korean popular music (rock, r&b, hip hop and pop) but at the same time westeners think of kpop as merely idol music (Blackpink are idols) and idol groups usually mix many genre within a song, it's not just teen pop or bubblegum pop. The best way to describe the whole thing is that the music genres are from USA while the idol industry was born firstly in Japan and then, the formula spread. Japanese industry is different from the Korean one, but both are equally interesting imo. Quick side note: Japanese music contents are really hard to find on UA-cam, it's not like Japanese Animation that is heavily promoted in the West since the 70s (yes, Italy was one of the first few country to welcome Japanese Animation into their broadcasting!). On the other side we have Korea, and Korean agencies uses the "Motown formula" (Motown is still a label btw, but their golden era was in the 60s, with artists like The Supremes, the Jackson 5, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many others). This formula consited on being, as Motown Wikipedia page says, "fastidiously groomed [ *grooming as in make up and combing hair* ], dressed and choreographed for live performances". Motown Records trained their artists very very young and unexperienced in dance, acting, vocals, they way they should talk, how to behave on national TV and overall being visually appealing. Quick side note: Japanese music contents are really hard to find on UA-cam, it's not like Japanese Animation that is heavily promoted in the West since the 70s (yes, Italy was one of the first few country to welcome Japanese Animation into their broadcasting!).
On the other side we have Korea, and Korean agencies uses the "Motown formula" (Motown is still a label btw, but their golden era was in the 60s, with artists like The Supremes, the Jackson 5, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and many others).
This formula consited on being, as Motown Wikipedia page says, "fastidiously groomed [ *grooming as in make up and combing hair* ], dressed and choreographed for live performances".
Motown Records trained their artists very very young and unexperienced in dance, acting, vocals, they way they should talk, how to behave on national TV and overall being visually appealing.
Korea, furthermore, saw the chance to expand their market.
