Come on, now; be honest. We are in fact somewhat less than 10% prepared. (what; like about 5%; 3%?). Lol. I have a feeling that of the money allocated in order to help us prepare, probably 75% goes to administration and for "scientists" to "study this phenomenon". Most of the rest goes to buy and install warning systems such as radio announcements, warning sirens and escape route road signs (which I have seen in western Washington.) If it happens, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE EXCEPT RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!! NOT Lol. As a side note, in Washington in the exact same areas that could be affected by tsunamis, there is worry of lahar mud flows from erupting volcanoes in the Cascades and so they have road signs for that scenario as well. Guess where I will never buy property.
I'm 62 years old. I have no doubt this event will happen someday. But I've heard about it my entire life and it's very old. Why in the heck would anyone live in that zone is beyond my comprehesion.
R I’m 40 years old, and grew up in Portland, Oregon area for around 20 years. It’s the most beautiful area! But, I decided to move to Arizona, and about 5-8 years before I moved we started to have earthquakes, never before then. We never had preparations for this, EVER! We, never had emergency alerts.. nothing. Seaside, OR. Is just a vacation area, there will always be vacations there. I’m scared for my friends who are there. And have NO doubt that this is going to occur soon. It’s a 2 lane small highway from the beaches over the mts. To the city... it will be stopped gridlock! Like Paradise, CA. Experienced. Sad!

I would be working on a greenhouse, dehydration using solar, because you will not have electricity. Get some sort of solarium set up. You can dehydrate meat too. Stockpile wood for heating. Planning for it, will give you some peace of mind. Moving won't help. This crap is everywhere! Look at the earthquake of 1812. It made the Mississippi river run BACKWARDS! it's at the edge of Tennessee! Very interesting subject. I wish you well! Best bet, keeping BACKPACKS packed with dehydrated foods and water purification tablets or straws. You can grab those, and go! And a pot to cook in!

Since WHEN have has anyone learned how to predict the future?? Could is the properly used term to consider the possibilities which is the best we can do at this point. When preparing for earthquakes there is inherent uncertainty which is quite unavoidable!!
The historical evidence says the last Tsunami, in year 1700, was 50 meters high, not feet. That makes the "tsunami safe" shelters into deathtraps. The one in three chance of it happening in the next fifty years is a very low estimate. In the last 60.000 years, the earthquakes and tsunamis in this region has been happening regularly every 200 years. Now it is 316 years since the last. The tension between the tectonic plates have been building up for a much longer time than usual. In recent years, we have seen a wave of big earthquakes going around the world. As the tectonic plates are all shoving at each other, there is no reason to believe the ones in the Pacific Northwest will stay put. I think it will come within the next ten years, and it will be a Mega quake. Get the hell out of there, a Tsunami is the only natural disaster you cannot survive. Unless you are more than 50 meters above sea level and on solid ground when it comes, you die.

K M - It isn’t just the thickness of concrete that matters, it’s how the entire structure is designed, especially the foundations. A news story like this doesn’t go into all the details.
@@GH-oi2jf The story has nothing to do with concrete, thickness, reinforcements, etc. - the story has everything to do with the highly likely scenario that almost everyone west of the Mississippi will die - because the incoming tsunami waves will - most likely - be huge which will shove the continental shelf inland which will result in massive friction and heat which will explode into thousands of volcanoes - which will probably include dozens of supervolcanoes - this is the scenario of the past which stupid geologists fail to grasp - but historic documents clearly convey - in over a dozen languages - that next to no one will survive so the concrete and the thickness are irrelevant.
Relocate the schools away from the coast regardless of cost. Putting them there was a bad idea anyway. This country has never witnessed a truly massive mega tsunami resulting from an equally massive mega quake. There are two areas of concern in regards to disastrous quakes coupled with Tsunamis, the West Coast and the Canary Islands. Either of which could make 9/11 look like a cake walk.
The Earth's Axis was moved by two degrees. 31 years ago today, i was in the Whittier-Narrow quake back home in Los Angeles. Jan 17 94, saw the largest quake to ever hit back home. Northridge threw me 400 miles east. In just a few minutes, your life can change forever. The San Fernando Valley, where i was living, actually was raised by 15 inches. FEMA can't even take care of the millions that have been affected by the hurricanes. Be prepared to take care of yourself if it is possible. 24 years have passed since the huge quake and i still remember it like yesterday.
No country in the world is more experienced and more well-prepared for earthquakes than Japan. If they at their best effort couldn't stand the shock, what makes you think we the Americans could have better chances? People need stop being freaked out, "oh, we must do something right now"...
Leslie Keith - That property has been the location of the high school for a century, long before we knew anything about tsunamis. But they are building a new school in the hills to the east. I don’t think that’s the best solution. There is only one chance in six that school will be in session when the tsunami hits. The entire town will be flattened, not just the schools. Seaside will be impossible to evacuate in time.
At 5:10 the students get under their desks as a response to an earthquake drill. Which is exactly what they would be told to do to protect themselves from an attack by nuclear weapons. Those desks must be super strong!
Well, the first thing you do is get under something sturdy, those desks don't qualify, to avoid falling debris. Second is after about 15-20 seconds of movement you leave the structures and move to clear ground, and high ground if you are in a tsunami vulnerable area. Good luck finding either in coastal California. Especially since you only have about 15 mins or less before the water rolls in and everyone will be moving to the same places at the same time.
It's the functional equivalent of Wylie Coyote holding a cocktail umbrella over his head just before a 60-ton boulder lands on him from the top of a 300 ft. cliff.
Frank Blangeard Same as a Tornado coming straight for you in tornado alley. I lived in MS. For a couple years as a young child, we were told the exact same thing! They know none of that will work for any of it.
they just said the waves can be 50 feet high. Then they tell us about a tsunami safety school that is 40 ft high. They are betting and not have 50 ft waves. A bit confusing.
I was thinking the exact same thing ... I would not want to be standing on that school roof which is Sunday 44 feet high and maybe be saying a wave that is 60 feet high rolling in .
They are not measuring the height of the building from sea level. The waves are estimated to be 50 feet above sea level. That school is probably at least 30' above sea level, so the top of that building would be something like 74' above sea level.
Portland and Seattle will be leveled.. None of the infrastructure has been retrofitted, the coast is going to be the least of our worries... Make sure you can survive for a month without any help.. Good luck folks
Everything in Portland has been reconstructed these past few years. Even the bridges are built to sway w such an event. The beach would be the worst place to be
Joey Benoit - I lived on the Oregon coast during that tsunami (from the Alaska earthquake). In my home town, a bridge and a few houses near the fiver were destroyed.
I wonder if a water tight room would work. since there are multiple waves, and the water could be high for several hours or more, they might need to provide air in the room too, or have a filtration device with its own power supply.

I've lived in Southern and Northern California since I was 14 years old. And I've been through numerous earthquakes, which, luckily, I've never experienced any real damage. But I've had numerous dreams over the last few decades of a huge tidal wave rising over the high heels and lower mountains of Central California (the Pacific Ridge from the coast along Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) The height of the waves were approximately 200-300 feet. I've also had dreams of similar waves reaching about 180 feet coming into San Francisco. I lived on the 19th floor of a condominium building on Cathedral Hill at the time. I'm guessing the height of the building along with the height of Cathedral Hill would make the waves around 250 plus in height. That's scary. Sure, I realize these were only dreams. And dreams are almost always due to unsettled hopes and/or fears. But considering that a very large earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone could create such enormous wave height, it's also a valid fear. I certainly hope I never see this in my lifetime. I'm 57 years old now, but I believe it's becoming more likely this could occur at some point in my lifetime. I'm a surfer from the mid 70s. I've surfed California on countless instances, from San Diego to the Oregon border. And I've been on some fairly large waves that reached 20 plus feet. That doesn't sound very intimidating but when you're riding such a wave it's much higher than it's seen. I couldn't imagine being on the coast or especially along the beach front when a 100 plus wave hits. It would be devistating to countless beach front honest and low-lying communities. Thousands along the coast would perish immediately and thousands would be injured severely. And this doesn't include the effects of various earthquakes along the coastal areas. Damn...If this happens, it will be more than anyone has considered. More than FEMA will be able to respond. 😔
opnwndo When I lived in Alaska I was always amazed by people who would build their homes in obvious avalanche zones. Or the people who built homes in the Turnagain neighborhood in Anchorage; right next to a park called “Earthquake Park” with seriously buckled landforms (small hills and gullies created by the ‘64 quake.) Madness!
Larry Hunt Usually how that works is the school district has the money from the government and the community votes on how the district can use it. They would have a bond proposal of the things they wanted to do with the money and the residents would vote yes or no on the bond. So it is government funded, but community driven.
my family and I go to Seattle a couple times per month since we only live like 30 minutes away...but as soon as we get there, I always have a gut feeling of “the big one” happening since it’s so unpredictable when it will strike. I feel super relieved the further we are from those earthquake/tsunami prone areas D:
I'm 63 yrs. old , my wife & me are planning to move to Honolulu , Hawaii next year, I don't even want to think the tsunami this disaster would create that would affect the Hawaiian islands, since most if not all of it would travel south & south west. But, no matter where you go, there's always some type of disaster just waiting to happen. One thing is sure, most of California is destined to disappear in the ocean, God forbid that day. I loved your video and thank you so much for it , mahalo nui loa.
2ndarymotion - As a Rockport, Texas, resident when Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, I can assure you that FEMA is close to useless at the individual family level. They may direct infrastructure repair well, but little else.
Scientists have been talking about this for many years and yet they are at less than 1 percent of the necessary preparation. It has nothing to do with saving life and all about the money. The reality is that when a catastrophe strikes we're all on our own basically. People need to prepare and protect themselves and their families without relying on the government or agencies because they will not be there for us.
Some of the comments here are truly nauseating. Makes me almost ashamed to be a conservative. This isn't about politics, it's about a disaster that is conservatively estimated to have the potential to take the lives of 10,000 or more AMERICAN lives, no matter what their political viewpoints might be. Men, women, children. Nature doesn't distinguish between age, gender, race, or political affiliation, when it goes on a rampage.
So all you thinking about moving to the west coast should instead move east. There are also active volcanoes on the west coast. They have already taken care of the tsunami, they put up signs telling you to get to higher ground.
This is why I recommend people getting involved in Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT), and getting an amateur radio license. Those of us who do survive this won't be able to use telephone or internet for a very long time, and that is if we leave the region after all this hits. If we opt to stay, it could be even longer.
No. Radio transceivers are self-contained devices, with the only serious limiting factor being the antenna connected to radio. To this end, antennas range from simple whip devices that connect directly to a hand-held unit, all the way up to those towers that you have expressed concern about. Truthfully, those towers aren't actually necessary, but they are more efficient than something like a G5RV wire antenna, or some whip type antennas. Truthfully, I seriously doubt that many hams will be using their towers during an emergency, relying more upon G5RV, handheld transceivers with a whip antenna, or NVIS systems. Large scale towers, though quite useful, are more of a luxury, and not all hams can afford them.
I think what he's saying is the cell phone device and internet and also land lines don't work because of the infrastructure involved. But the alternative would be publicly available radio frequencies that involve purchasing the designated equipment. For us fifth graders out there.
Christopher Rose I'll just use my CB radio in my vehicle. It gets out. It's putting out 750 watts, with a little help from a big ole stick of dynamite made by Texas Star. Blasted through a good quality antenna, and the radio is a good one, all tweaked and peaked with a good tune up. I'll communicate.
Yes, the Cascade Subduction Zone is very susceptible. Pair that with being in the Pacific Fire Ring and you have a recipe for major disaster and cataclysm!

+Justin M - what do you know about the "Lord" that you did not learn from men? Most likely the answer is "nothing." So who are those men who tell you what to believe, and what did they do to deserve your complete unquestioning trust in nothing more than their words? Are they able to demonstrate their credentials by working the kinds of miracles the bible promises you can do? See Matthew 17:20 - it's been a while since I've seen any Christian throwing a mountain into the sea with just a spoken command. And speaking of errors of "their" ways, if you actually read the bible, you'll read Jesus telling people to stop judging the sins of other people and fix their own sins first. Have you stopped sinning entirely, according to the definition of "sin" that you mindlessly absorbed from your self-appointed spokesmen for God? If you are still sinning routinely, just like 100% of professing Christians, then STFU about other people's "errors." Your own stupid bible says only sinless people can judge others.

Does anyone know the details of said 18% Tax hike? I mean once the improvements are finished I would have demanded the Tax increase be removed as part of the deal leaving maybe a .5% inplace for maintenance. This is the main problem with government in general, once a tax is put in place it stays that way unless it is outlined to be retracted in a specified amount of time. There are so many other ways to pay for something like this other than fleecing the general public of their money.
T Dawg That's what I was thinking too. 44 feet, that's nothing for some tsunamis. Supposedly there have been tsunamis of nearly 1500 feet in the prehistoric past. Not that it would ever happen again, but then it could.
Do some research on the underwater landscape in the PNW. It isn't the right coastline to get giant 100ft tsunami waves like what we saw in 2004. 30-40ft is likely as big as they'll get.
If you live in the NW, know this and still don't consider moving out... you can only blame yourself when it comes. There's really no preparation for tsunami like this. Japan is the best prepareted for tsunamis nation in the world and look what happened with a much smaller wave, how far and fast in the land it came with debris. 50 feet high is a very optimistic estimate. Most scientist say it would be much higher.
"It can't happen here…it can't happen here; I'm telling you, my dear…that it can't happen here. 'Cause I've been checking it out…checked it out a couple of times…"

It's such a sad thing knowing something so devastating will probably happen to such a quaint and beautiful place. I lived in Portland for over a decade and recently moved. The Oregon Coast is gorgeous. Was over the gloominess and rain among other things anyways.
Gee, a disaster in the Northwest equivalent to five or six Hurricane Katrina’s?!!?? How many Danziger Bridge shootings will result from that mess? Does that mean the local or state government will order law enforcement officers and national guard soldiers to illegally confiscate firearms from lawful owners for no reason whatsoever and without any due process of law five times as fast? 🙄 Leaving only criminals with a monopoly on the use of deadly force in the disaster area? Thanks 🙏🏾 a lot, New Orleans and surrounding parishes! The poor, black population (already marginalized) really appreciated being made victims by their own “leadership,” then by the people that were supposed to protect them, finally by those bipedal animals that prey on the defenseless.
I'd like to think that where I am on the East Coast is safe, but few parts of this country are truly safe. Yeah, we don't have to worry about debilitating earthquakes and hurricanes barely touch us, but the rising ocean levels will surely destroy a significant part of my home state (Maryland-DC Metro). No place is safe.
I watched a video about a volcano eruption on one of the canary islands collapsing into the Atlantic and causing a tsunami an hitting the east coast. So yea nowhere is truly safe. If we spent all our time and money preparing for what COULD happen, SOME DAY, we'd never have time for anything else, and even then we'd still not be even 10% prepared. This whole idea of trying to guilt people into giving their lives away NOW to POSSIBLY help people survive in the event that something bad COULD happen is ludicrous.

When tsunami flood waters run up narrowing valleys the water may hit 50 meters. Along the Washington coast the waves are expected to be 30-50 feet.

I would never trust FEMA
Correct. Do not trust them
Relocate the schools away from the coast regardless of cost.

@@GH-oi2jf the land in japan dropped about 9 feet.

I've lived in Southern and Northern California since I was 14 years old.
And I've been through numerous earthquakes, which, luckily, I've never experienced any real damage.
But I've had numerous dreams over the last few decades of a huge tidal wave rising over the high heels and lower mountains of Central California (the Pacific Ridge from the coast along Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1)
The height of the waves were approximately 200-300 feet.
I feel nothing for someone that would build in a river bed, and complain about water...

Residents have to flip the bill entirely and the government doesn't.
This i don't understand..
Larry Hunt Usually how that works is the school district has the money from the government and the community votes on how the district can use it. They would have a bond proposal of the things they wanted to do with the money and the residents would vote yes or no on the bond. So it is government funded, but community driven.
They would rather spend money on illegal aliens, then disaster planning , and high Demorat government pensions.

Earthquakes, mudslides and gigantic fires are all parts of what make the West coast great lol :P

Isn’t nyc on top of one too?
Wait until Yellowstone goes off!
That shouldn't happen for a while though. Hopefully.
it needs to hurry up clean out Seattle and Cali 😁😂
Don't forget about Portland. California & Washington, sent their trash here 😄😃😀😂🤣🤣🤣
Some of the comments here are truly nauseating.
Should move to the southern hemisphere. We're about done with the safety and resources we have previously enjoyed.
Seaside passed bond to move School to higher ground 2017
Probably spent on teacher raises.

Quotius X - This just happened recently. You don’t build a new school overnight.
The school opens next year.
here's a thought; Move out of the "zone" NOW!, no, no, NOW!!
the human settlement zones? too bad im stuck in the "texas triangle"
Just like people who live in a desert and are starving. "You live in f***king desert! Move to where the food is!"
To where? Oklahoma?? LMFAO!
Christopher Rose fema is the worst agency we have than there is red cross and both of them cannot be trusted at all
Christopher Rose I'll just use my CB radio in my vehicle. It gets out. It's putting out 750 watts, with a little help from a big ole stick of dynamite made by Texas Star. Blasted through a good quality antenna, and the radio is a good one, all tweaked and peaked with a good tune up. I'll communicate.
Bob Kerbs. You can talk with china @750 watts. Everyone will be gone along the coast so start learning Chinese, i guess.
Yes, the Cascade Subduction Zone is very susceptible. Pair that with being in the Pacific Fire Ring and you have a recipe for major disaster and cataclysm!

Interesting, Oregon State University just built their oceanography building on a coastline earthquake zone and did not care.
Larry Sparks probably the only affordable land that fit their needs
Also its oceanography being near the ocean might be their thing. You wouldn't build a mountain climbing facility in Kansas.
Who made the animation at 2:42? It's a nice clean clear explanation of the essential idea for the general public.
too bad the 40 years it takes for Co2 to effect .00000000001% of the sun's energy that normally escapes our atmosphere every second.... can't be put in a chart at all. Gore tried to with a lift thing.. but it was just a chart of Co2 measurement... not a 'picture' of how the oceans and winds behave and interact with life on Earth. especially the stuff with eyeballs... in the same future time period... as far as anyone can predict.. of the above little worry thing. millions of people might have to relocate. millions of us Americans you mean. but if it is half a billion to 3 billion brown people in Asia and the middle east.. get ready to build a REALLY REALLY REALLY big wall..... all along both of the coastlines as well as Canada AND Mexico.
helloooooooooooooooooo??????
What does climate change pseudoscience have to do with an earthquake?
Guys for crying out loud, we might not like the policies of calif and much of the west coast BUT THERE ARE PEOPLE THERE, quit Hoping for an earthquake, we should he praying they'll see the error of their ways and find Grace in the eye's of the Lord..
Justin M so he only helps if you "pray"???? Lmao, you idiots will believe anything. How can anyone truly believe ANY religion?
Seaside: "Keeping our kids safe from a horrible death is important to us... until it gets spendy."
Look how calm the Japanese people are waiting for water. I was in LA when the Northridge quake hit. I've never seen such hysterics.
They've been crying this for 70 years
The coast will be most affected. Live a bit more inland, peeps!
It's only a matter of time before CBS gets something right!
The native Americas that settled in this area back in the year 1700 had a devastating Tsunami that killed all near the coast. Apparently the two plate get stuck and release the energy as an earthquake every 500 years or so. As beautiful as this area is it WILL happen again and soon.
If you don't learn from history then you will be lost by it.
It's actually supposed to be about every 200 years, which makes it 118 years overdue.
I would like to know what Chris Goldfinger thinks right now. I’ve heard several channels warning for an earthquake soon on the Cascadia.
Alex Jones can sell you some anti earthquake pills!!!!!! Also cheap tickets to the best Fema Camps.
What channels are you listening to..channels like Mary Greeley ?

I DID HAVE DREAM LAST NIGHT THAT THE SATE OF CALIFORNIA WENT INTO THE OCEAN AND THE GOLDEN BRIDGE WAS COVERED UP BY WATER AND STATE OF OREGON WAS COVERED UP BU THE VERY HIGH WATER AND ALL THE TOWN WAS GOING
Cant prepare not enough time to flee .get right with God only way
Lowell Knox Good thought, a believer has nothing to fear because to die is to gain.
WHO'S HERE IN 2020?
Wait the ocean level will drop a meter? That should offset the rise in sea levels due to melting polar bears.
Yes we can't forget those melting polar bears. These people are being lied to. The tsunami will be 500' to 1500' high not 50'. Everything west of interstate 5 will be wiped out. It is expected to happen by 2023.
lets hope you are wrong i live in that strip between the beach and I-5. Who cares still beats my childhood in the midwest dodging tornadoes. There id no earthquake season.
@@exidor-1685the midwest has a fault line called the New Madrid and it is overdue. It runs through Missouri but many states would feel the effects of a strong jolt.

(Lives in Northern California) Well.......shit
You have earthquakes all the time. In Oregon were I live, this will be a total nightmare.
rainbowdashisawesome5621 Earthquakes we have, tsunami's we do not
Then move out of the state to a state in the middle with no oceans :)
rainbowdashisawesome5621 will rely on the mountains, they will be my refuge!!
People are in hospitals because of so many forest fires in west. Midwest has tornadoes. South has floods. Droughts are killing water wells in southwest. Where are ya gonna go? NO where is safe.
That Oregon school district. It would only take about 25 percent of the cost of Fema in the storage and planning departments in that area to build the needed school. There is great money to be made through FEMA if you don't actually do anything except spend money.
Then again, it may not happen for 1000 generations or more.
one thing oregon has never done is widen the roads leading away from the coast - thousands will be stranded on the hiways and wrecks will be everywhere
If they are all intact.
Im ready.... lets make the northwest great again.
18%! Yeah I would have voted it down too!
These are the same people who want open borders!!? WTF!
It would not cost so much if they stopped building CASTLES
At that price, the vote is moot. I'd move out either way.
If you were in the middle of the tsunami happening, you would be like "I'll pay 1000%, I'll pay 1000%!!!" running like a headless chicken lol
There are so many other ways to pay for something like this other than fleecing the general public of their money.
it's almost like building cities at and below sea level, is a bad idea.
Seaside is one city under sea level. It's also one of my favorite places to vacation. My favorite hotel is right on the beach.
@@karib7116 is that you Al Gore?
Sorry to be a buzzkill, but 44feet is not tall enough. Make it a hundred feet and you might be good and only if the structural support holds.
T Dawg
That's what I was thinking too.
@@eamontanner6778 they were talking about preparing for a large tsunami. 4 stories isn't very high
I am beginning to think none of us are getting off this planet alive.
Have no fear, Trump will be blamed for 100% of it.
Fair enough, Trump blamed Obama for everything that happened on his watch.
And if it does not happen, he will take credit for it.
Water of his back...he dont care

And this is where the folks obsessing about climate change are living.
Why scoffing at people who care about the consequences of human hubris to our planet?
Science works fine while predicting 50 year earthquakes but doesn't work for measuring 50 year temperature changes?
Public schools during nuclear bombs be like, "Everyone calmly get under your small, insignificant desk and wait this out."
Public schools during earthquake be like, "Everyone run as fast as you can straight up."
It's such a sad thing knowing something so devastating will probably happen to such a quaint and beautiful place. I lived in Portland for over a decade and recently moved. The Oregon Coast is gorgeous. Was over the gloominess and rain among other things anyways.
It was nice that the national news did a story on the pacific NW for once and not California.
I live in Puget sound not far from this zone and I am also surrounding by many volcanos and local faultlines. Its the reality of living here, but I was born and raised. When it does happen, it happens and not a dam thing, I due will change that. I have already been threw a 6.8 m and that was dam scary.. with this being 900 time more powerful, if there is a god. may he be with us o:)
Very much needed event for S. F. CA .!

Majority live hundreds of feet above sea level.
Kids trying to get under those small flimsy desks is pitifully.
If you don't think taxes are a form of taking your life away from you, you must not pay taxes.
