Good info suspension and seat are the top of the list for me and the first thing I change when I buy a new bike. I have done 1352 miles in 34 hours, I am 62 and I really don't want to do it again unless I have to. I only did it the last because I had some delays on a cross country trip that put me in a position that I needed to get home in two days for my Granddaughters birth day which I was not going to miss.

Just bought a bike in Las cruzes nm. Bought a one way ticket to get it and road that pony back to Idaho. 3 weeks ago. 1000 miles. Took 3 days. Stretched about every 75 to 100 miles. Could have done in 2 days but had to visit family in Salt Lake. 500 miles a day is a long day. Especially if weather isn't the best. I've earned my badge as far as I'm concerned. Haha. Get an Indian. Great bikes!!!

Great info. I am also impressed with the new driving, fog lights. First thing I did on my 2020 RG is adjust the head light up. I think HD needs to rethink how they set them. Cold weather sucks no matter how you dress. I just layer put my leathers on, keep my face and neck warm and the heated grips come in handy. I have riden in 10 degree weather being in Michigan on clear days. Be safe and keep up the content.

Great feedback, bro. I loved all the content from Niagara and Harv’s big time…. But I was thinking, oh man, he might want that time later! But you conquered anyway. I thought for sure you had Ciro3D Vision X headlights…. From all I’ve seen, they blow away the competition with brightness and how wide and how far they provide incredible light. Is that next for Silverback? And I had to pause the content to make a note of the Motorcycle Tire Plug Kit. It’s probably not great potential content, but I would like to see demonstrated once on an old shop tire you have or Dave has, putting that plug in properly and topping the air pressure off in order to getting back on the road. I think that’s an important forget-me-not to any kind of road trip. Makes me cringe when I think of all the road trips I’ve taken, and never had that kit with me. By the grace of God, man I didn’t need it. Great reminder for me.

Oh brother! Gold on the teach around tire plugging! So elementary, but I’ve overlooked that resource all these years, and just been lucky I never needed it! I’ll never be without that kit again. What’s the name on that tire plug kit you used and do the air canisters come with it? Question: once you drove the plug into the puncture, how did you release the plug and pull the tool back out without pulling the plug out again? 😳 Thanks buddy, enjoy the travels this week!

Great rundown! Thank you. Agree with your assessment; Suspension, seat, bar/pegs, lighting, gear. Unfortunately, most motorcycles, even high-end $30K bikes have weak suspension. It sucks, but if a rider has $25-$30 grand to spend on a motorcycle, and the time off work to be doing Iron Butt rides, they can spend $1500 bucks on suspension. Re downloads; Audio books and podcasts can be great on top of music, be sure to utilize hearing protection so all you hear is the audio. Re Waze; Wazers can make self-reports on the fly on the app-police, wrecks, traffic, potholes, construction.

John, have you ever had the cell phone GPS go out due to poor reception and you are actually depending on it for navigation? The last thing you want to do is get lost when it's late, cold or even in need of gas in some remote location.
What do we do in this situation?

I need to change the handle bars. I'm 6'8" tall and weigh about 280lbs. What are those bars on your motorcycle, and who makes them. What bars would you suggest and why? Thanks hope to hear from you.

LOL back in the day Here in Houston Texas we hopped on that pony pointed it towards Sturgis and hauled ass most of the way until we got there. We never thought about what we just did because our minds were on wild woman and getting fucked up ! Along the way we always picked up the hitchhiker backpack toting babes heading our way. And instead of getting a room sleep in the elements and started partying the minute we got there ! Never new we could belong to a hardass group lol 😜

Great tips! I agree - Lighting is seriously important and the only time I like being an attention whore. almost no bikes comes with a good stock seat, so I have found Corbin and Russell to be great options. I didn’t realize that about heated gear, and great advice on gear choices. I ditched my leather jackets for textile - Klim Carlsbad in my case. Much more adaptable to different climates and rain. The 80 MPH speed limits (my cruising speed was 90+ mph) here in Utah made my BBG more doable. Suspensions on Harleys are terrible and it blows me away that you have to upgrade it to make the bike rideable. I had to upgrade my old Road Glide to Legends. This is not an issue with my BMW K1600. I’m gonna try your tire fluid idea! Rather than CarPlay, I use a Garmin Zumo XT GPS, and it bluetooths to my phone for music, which I play through my helmet headset. On performance, I agree. My K1600 has way more power than I need for a BBG, but the inline 6 engine is seriously smooth and that makes a big difference. It feels better for long distances, and it reduces fatigue. On fatigue, I will try a 5 hr energy once, then if it happens again, I pull over and find a grassy spot for a 30- min snooze. Good for the rest of the day. Finally, only reason I got an IBA certification was to qualify for the Iron Butt Rally someday. Again, thanks for sharing your experience!
