Someone believes it is art, and that makes it art to that one person. Enough people agree that it’s art to put it on display. It is art to them, and therefore, it is art. Yellowing isnt always bad, in my opion with sculptures the yellowing can give more depth to them than white and there is a beauty in it like an aged book.
I've heard that many ancient statues were originally painted. I wonder if people from those times would have a similar sadness if they saw those statues today.

Art is just manmade creativity that's supposed to display a purpose. So, if he made this wiith a purpose, and used creativity to influence that puropse, then technically, yeah. I mean, it's not like those things where they just kinda stack up cups, without it even forming anything, and call it a night, so. Not all art requires hard work. Art is supposed to display emotion, not just talent or skill. I wish people would understand that more.

I’m honestly pretty impressed that it’s sealed so well to make sure no water is lost. That takes some level of skill. I don’t have it in me to be super into minimalist modern art but usually there’s something to be said for the construction.

OMG, I saw this last week at a Museum. There were two pieces by Hans Haacke next to each other. It was placed in the context of other works with an undertheme about climate change. It really got me thinking abiut what he wanted to communicate.
I think on its own, without the intent of the artist and context behind the meaning and story, it would just be a plexiglass cube with some water. Its the meaning behind it that makes ot thought provoking art. If some random guy made this and tried to tell me it was art without beung able to explain how it was art besides just "uh its avant garde?" Then its not art. But because there is clear thought and meaning placed behind it, its art.
If it makes you stop and look/think, then yes, it's art. It's different for everyone. Art can be as simple as a field of flowers or a plate of food. It can be a detailed painting or a complicated piece of music. The museum being used as a way to define art is where the trouble is. Art is every day
So as someone who really isnt into art, when i go to art galleries or look for paintings to buy, i want to be wowwed and not feel like i can do that if I really wanted to. I dont want to feel like the art is being elitist. I dont want to feel like the art is only in the museum because someone's name is attached to it. So i do think its art, but I would only look at it for 5 seconds lol.

Life is art like I look around me and everything I see seems like art to me idk- there's this peculiar amazement and beauty when I look around me no matter where I am. Rainy days are gorgeous, they create emotions within me. Ladybugs with their beautiful colors and patterns. Even seeing humans interacting, watching two strangers who've never met just smile at each other after accidentally making eye contact. It just all feels like art to me. Who's to say the sky isn't art? Does something have to be created by humans to be art?
my professor told us there is a rumor that the MOMA did not buy (or have it featured again, i can’t recall if purchasing was in the cards) this piece because it was “too fun”! 😄
It definitely fits the definition of art. So, academically I would say that it is hard. Plus it is a great way to make the statement the artist was intending to make.
I know it's about what is art but it also feels like a statement on impermanence. No water is lost or gained but the way the water condenses changes and the pattern will never be the same again, I could see it tomorrow and it will be a different piece.

It harkens to Duchamp's Paris Bottled Air . I love it. I love them. I've also done a "take" on this theme. Mine had elements of performance and video and spoken word and multiple participants sharing a single breath that was then placed into a blown glass sculpture and sealed. This reminds me of the artist that ships glass boxes that fit exactly inside a cardboard shipping box, and the name of the piece is the shipping lable. Everytime it's shipped the piece is changed so you never see the same piece twice.

I used to hate art pieces like this, because I thought they were trying to be art when I would say they aren't. But once I found out that it's an art piece making the audience asked the question "is this art?" I had a better appreciation for them, like the urinal toilet and banana tape to the wall.
