Thanks Paul. Always good to see a good ole’ de Havilland Canada Dash 8. I used to live just a few kms from the de Havilland Canada plant and it was great to see them test flown. Oh and for the record, as Bombardier is French it is pronounced Bom-Bar-Dee-A. And if you like short take offs/landings, you have to see the Dash 8’s older sister - the de Havilland DHC-5 Buffalo. I have seen them take off and land in just 500 metres! Oh and speaking of designations, the Dash 8 moniker comes from her original designation of DHC-8 (as in de Havilland Canada number or dash 8).
i love it and im 13 and when my dad was my age and he is 49 in November he and his dad flew a Fokker friendship to mackay and dad thought the wheels fell off
Turbulence?? I was on a QANTAS 747 flying Sydney - Honolulu in 1975 and we hit a massive downdraft caused by a thunderstorm. People that weren't strapped in hit the roof. The lights went out for a few seconds. Ceiling panels were hanging down afterwards. Chaos!! There was a baby in the basinett on the bulkhead and I saw it float up into the air before the lights went out. When the lights came back on I looked at the baby - it was back in the basinett and fast asleep! There was an annoucement for doctors as some passengers had been injured. When we finally got to Honolulu the passengers spent ten minutes trying to find their shoes (lots of people remove their shoes on international flights) as they had been flung all over the cabin. My father was a QANTAS 747 first officer at the time and we were on a family holiday. My sister's seatbelt wasn't working (QANTAS!!! how could you), and my father had swapped seats with her and was holding onto the arm rests as he knew the turbulence might be bad - luckily he hung on! My father talked to the pilots on the way out and they said the aircraft dropped 3000 feet in something like ten seconds. Fun fact - TV personality Mike Walsh was on the same flight so he can confirm this story.
Those vortices were cool to see. I know it's an optical illusion, but it's still quite "trippy" watching the propellers spinning and then look like they are going in reverse, while in the air 😂
Most scary flight for me was back in 1997. Flying from SYD to CBR on an Ansett 737. We were flying through a thunderstorm, and everybody in the cabin was quiet. The short flight seems to take ages. Upon landing in Canberra, the captain had to make a joke to relief the pressure "Ladies and gentlemen, we have landed in London", everyone started laughing.
I got a rough flight on an Ansett 737-200 from Sydney to Melbourne. Lightning outside the window and we got thrown all over the place. My seat mate said hold on captain called flight attendants to seats now! 1983! I have been on an Emb110 bandit and SAAB 340B in Rarotonga Cook Islands. Thrilling. Cheers.
Once flew from Jeju South Korea back to Ningbo China. Before boarding, a flight from Jeju to Shanghai had been canceled due to a thunderstorm. My flight took off as usual. More than half of the flight was extremely bumpy, it was like riding a rollercoaster. Cabin service was suspended due to turbulence and flight attendants held their hands firmly to the overhead luggage racks. I could barely see anything out of the window. PA was rare for Chinese airlines, but the captain made one telling passengers he is very experienced and he can manage the situation.
Flew the 8-300 from Sydney to Bendigo on a 40 degree day last year. Was surprisingly great. Ice cold aircon and noise wasn’t too bad. The flight attendants said its one of the longest flights they do.
I did the Lismore to Sydney flight in one of those . There was major thunderstorm activity all along the NSW coast that day . BEST ROLLERCOASTER RIDE EVER !
I used to work for the Quantaslink flights that operated for JQ here in NZ. Mainly Our flights was SBI, TQM, TQL, TQD and TQK. Once a maintenance is due they fly one Air craft back to Tamworth Airport via Norfolk Islands and they bring down SBW as a replacement. Since JQ stopped it's regional flights here in NZ last November all the flights went back to Qantas link. Only in Auckland we used the step and the prop tie while pax are disembarking and boarding while the other ports used the Q ramp as shown in the video. Lots of memories with these props. Now I work for the JQ A320s. The Tail Number which starts with S (SBT) means Single Beacon while where T (TQM) starts with is twin beacon
Hello from Toronto. Back in the1970s, I was on a nighttime flight on a DC9 over Tennessee and the turbulence was so severe, one of the flight attendants sat right down on the aisle floor to keep her balance. Pretty wild ride.
Nice camera work , especially some of the slow motion shots and I like a panning shot from the remote gate bus at the end. The toilets are the worst I've been in as you fold yourself in and out, and then nearly took out the flight attendant who was standing there before the flight. I like the idea of booking the row 1 and 2 seat with friends or family - one could call it the Q (300) Suite
You got it spot on about flying in these twin prop planes. A totally different flying experience than flying on the big jets. The high pitch noise of the propellers and you feel every bit of turbulence and the plane twisting and swaying with every bit of wind movement. Great review! Ah I see now that it was the exact same plane 'Rockhampton' that i flew from Canberra on. I thought you just meant the same model! Snap!
Thanks for another interesting video, Paul. My rough flight was Sydney to Belmont one night around 1985 in an Aero Pelican De Havilland Twin Otter through a thunderstorm, especially violent over Broken Bay. I was scared shitless! Put me off small planes for years and I caught a train home the next day. The Twin Otter was a 16 seater that developed into the Dash-6. It had twin P&W turbo props, 2 pilots, no hostess and a fixed undercarriage. Mercifully it wasn't a tail dragger, otherwise I would never have got on.
Paul I think it’s pretty neat seeing a dinky wheel set disappear into the engine housing. You are not alone! Two roughest flights? 1. BA London to Naples- we flew over a volcano and dropped a tasty 3000 feet before hitting the runway. The pilot joyfully advised us “that we had definitely landed.” 2. Alitalia Rome to London. A windy night landing or should i say go around. We barely touched the tarmac when we took off. The door to the cockpit burst open and we could hear the pilots talking loudly and quickly. I can only guess but it probably wasn’t “It’s going to be another half an hour before we get our espresso and ice cream”
Great video mate!!!, My older brother showed me one of your videos when I was little and I really enjoyed and I have been watching your videos ever since keep up the great work!!!
I have had a few flights on the Q400 of the now defunct FLYBE, I enjoy the experience, as you put it, the raw flying. Not had a flight for over a year now, and missing it. Thanks for the videos. Gary
I have been on one flight, at 8000 feet, through a thunderstorm, from Atlanta, Georgia to Greenville, South Carolina, USA. The guy in the seat in front of me made use of his air sickness bag; I barely made it through the flight. And I loved the view of Sydney CBD!
Ah Paul does it again - Port Macquarie International Airport! LOL. A few years ago, for about 15 months I flew SYD/CBR on Monday mornings and back on Friday arvo. Mostly in Dash 8s. On this morning there was turbulence and we did two go-rounds. Before starting the third landing attempt the pilot told us that if we did a third go round, we'd be heading back to Sydney to re-fuel. Pax were happy when we made it down! Whilst the jets take most of the noise away, when younger in a DC3 (?) I loved the bit where on take-off, the plane would be at the end of the runway and then they rev the engines up to 111% and let the brakes off. Yee hah - you knew that you were flying.
The Q-300 turbo-props are a common sight here in New Zealand (Air New Zealand). The last couple I caught were between Christchurch and Palmerston North and they were jam-packed. Which wasn't particularly comfortable but my favorite thing is cutting through the clouds and seeing Lake Ellesmere come into view. I agree with you. There's something very real about this type of plane. Them and the ATR-72 are the bread and butter of the airlines local/national hops between towns and cities.
Hey Paul, I went to the FlyPelican Inaugural flight it was good there wasn't that many people there but it was good to see a different aircraft come into Port. I dont know if you have but you totally should fly on the BAE Jetstream 32, you dont have to choose from Port to Canberra but from anywhere, It is a really interesting aircraft on how it is designed, it looks like the took the Cargo Pod form the Cessna Caravan and the tail from a Citation Jet. I did take a video but I haven't uploaded it. Hope you come back to Port sometime maybe when Alliance comes back with there new contract with Virgin.
Dash 8 - my favourite aircraft! If I'm visiting my folks down in tassie I'll deliberatly get a jet to melbourne, then swap to a dashie for the trip to devonport. Done the trip countless times, and no you are not strange, there is something satisfying watching the gear drop out from under the nacelle :)
haha I know what you mean. I flew from SYD to CHC via HKG and AKL because I wanted to get onboard a Cathay A350 back when they were just launched. #avgeekproblems
Hey Paul, thank you for an amazing flight review. Always loved flying on the Dash 8 (mainly Air NZ Q300) - as you said it brings the rawness, and beauty, of flying to life! Also loved your reference to Wunala - hopefully she becomes a flying geek blessing! Wunala Bro!
Great video Paul! Enjoying your videos of late more and more. Editing was spot on, making your experience watchable and interesting right to the end. Haven’t flown this aircraft type since 1991. And now can’t wait to book a SYD - ABX flight this winter for some Falls Creek snow action. Well done sir.
Hey Paul..recent subscriber and am really enjoying your content. Great quality. I love flying the Dash-8 as well and can appreciate your fondness for the landing gear movement. Cheers from Canada and I look forward to more of your aviation content.
Great high quality video thanks Paul. I remember getting on a Dash 8 straight after getting off an A380 and my goodness it felt small in comparison. Still a great old work horse though.
Thanks for the video Paul. So nice to see fellow Aussie's flying especially when us Melbournian's can't move more than 25k's from home. I'm missing air travel and all the freedom it brings so very, very much.
Hi Paul Another great review of one of my favorite aircraft. You are like my postman "you never fail to deliver" Keep up the great reviews. Kind regards DS
Thank you for sharing. Aircrafts with landing gear under engines become very dangerous after 2 decades. Because aircraft's wings are subjected to more Stress and Wear during continuous operations.
My turbulent flight was on an A320 from Sydney to Ballina-Byron bay airport. The captain also gave us a warning and the wings were shaking violently. The landing was rough as well.
I’ve flown on the Dash 8 100 series from Melbourne to Burnie/Wynyard - 36 seater. Sadly Qantaslink pulled out of Wynyard in 2006 although Qantas recently have ramped up their regional services since Rex decided to go into capital city runs. I love the sound of the Dash 8s.
I sat in 1A when Jetstar had the Q300s over here in NZ I only got that because I was on staff travel standby at the time and yes it's very awkward facing the passengers. Tbh I'm so glad Air New Zealand Q300s don't have that Configuration anyways Paul I absolutely love the mighty Dash and they're such a pretty aircraft to work and hope I'll be able to do that again soon. Sensational video as usual
@@PaulStewartAviation the Q300 figuration was changed in NZ to allow more freight room down the back. The galley that is at the back was moved to the front where the backward facing seats are.
I remember flying into Bundaberg Qld on a 19 seater Jetstream 32 descending on a hot humid summers evening and it was getting extremely bumpy to almost bucking bronco standard. I was in the first row back from the cockpit and it only had a curtain separation which was open for coolness I imagine. The aircraft took another plunge and alarms went off and the pilot said quite loudly "sh##". It was a case of a bit too much information for us and he immediately realised this and closed the curtain but too their credit they got galloping gertie safely onto the tarmac.
Last time I was on one of these was a flight to Anchorage Alaska for a doctors appointment and I lived in Kenai, AK at the time. A rather intimidating plane mostly due to the loudness and the prop being so close to the entrance lol. I was maybe 8 at the time and had never been on a plane before.
I really like your content Paul. And you mentioned turbulence, I have found it to be a little bumpy every time I've landed at Hobart.. I've always figured it's the air coming off the water meeting the land and mountains that cause it but I actually like that feeling
I was on a United 767 out of Heathrow and over Dublin we were going through some really crazy turbulence, and we even dropped some quite abruptly. You’re not alone, I binge watch Dash 8 videos for landing gear footage. BTW love your RM Williams, thinking about getting myself some, despite being an ardent fan of cowboy boots.
Anyone can review Emirates Business Class, it takes a real UA-camr to review a Dash 8 flight from Port Macquarie to Sydney :-) ! It's great to have a new video from you Paul. You don't just entertain, you educate and I love that about your videos.
Thanks for this video, it gave some useful insights. I have just booked a Qantas link flight on one of these aircraft (Adelaide-Mt Gambier) - am looking forward to my trip. Am interested to compare it to the Saab Turbo props that Rex airlines use. (...and I agree the visual of the landing gear coming down does look cool!)
Glad you enjoyed it Kathryn. I've got some older videos onboard the Saab 340 on my channel. A more recent one is Fly Coporate from Wollongong and a muuuuuch older REX video from many years ago. Cheers
I flew on Dash 8 400 from Salzburg to Vienna by Tyrolean/Austrian airlines. After years of jets it was surprisingly smooth. The pilots were from Ukraine and previously worked for Antonov.
Hi there. A lovely video here. Would you know if Port Macquarie has a control tower or is it still pilot coordinated traffic procedures? Was a pretty busy airport when I was in flying school ❤
I love that seat on the dash-8s as well, best seat in the house! :) I've always wondered what the mix of point-to-point vs connecting traffic is on the Port - Sydney flights is. By the time you factor in getting to and from the airport and check in business, if you aren't connecting onwards then time savings of flying must be getting pretty modest, especially as the Pacific Highway upgrades continue.
I have always loved the sound of a turbo prop. The Dash 8's are a great little plane but for my money nothing ever comes close to the beautiful sound of the Rolls Royce Dart turbo prop on the Fokker F27. I miss the old days in the 70's and 80's getting out of the car at the Ansett car park at Kingsford Smith airport in Sydney and the first thing you hear is the scream of the F27's on the tarmac. Love it. If you tried to start an F27 today you would be hit with thousands of dollars in fines for noise pollution.
Nice video I've flown on Q400's from Mildura to Melbourne & like you I really enjoy flying on this aircraft, a friend of mine has said that she would never go flying In these turboprops but I also find these flights very smooth, The only bumpy experience I had was In summer as Mildura gets well into the 40's so the hot air does cause a bit of a ride. I'm heading to Brisbane In about 6 weeks so I will have the best of both worlds flying In a Q400 & then a Boeing 737.
The Dash 8 was based on the 4 engined Dash 7 STOL (of the seventies), with 113 delivered, of which many are still flying many in Northern Canada. However, the Dash 8 is a global hit, albeit not to everyone's taste. And re turbulence, I've had px lose their coffee to the roof - a rare event, but it does occasionally happen.
Nothing wrong with a turbo prop. Last week I flew on an Air NZ Q300 of a 35 minute flight from Kerikeri (Bay of Islands) to Auckland, traveling at 12,000 ft. Great flight with a friendly flight deck and cabin crew. Being a small regional airport, Kerikeri airport has a new terminal building with good views of the runaway and apron. No self check in but the old fashion check in by 2 ground staff like in the old days when flying was adventure :)
Flying ADL-MLB tomorrow on a Dash8, seat 4D so this video is quite timely. I can't remember the last time I flew, it was years not months ago. I love planes but hate flying which is quite ironic having been in the RAAF for many years, Not everybody gets to fly in the RAAF, somebody has to keep the planes in the air.
Hi paul. Love the dash 8. But still think the F27s were the best, big windows and the screaming dart engines. I flew in a Silk Air atr 42 from Bangkok to a resort near Koh Chang. That flight was bumpy and felt like the aircraft rolled and dropped dramatically suddenly. Lots of yells and a some screams but the rest of the flight was safe.
Lovely footage coming back into Sydney, and I agree about the landing gear. Looks a little bouncy. I’ve never flown the Q300 or 400, and maybe it was even a 100 I flew on, when it was still a Boeing aircraft (Boeing bought DHC, then sold it to Bombardier)
Hi everyone, don't forget to click the thumbs up as I need the validation. And comment on something, mostly because I need the validation. haha
haha, what is validation?
They retired those planes from our fleet
Validated! Enjoy!!

Thank you for sharing. Aircrafts with landing gear under engines become very dangerous after 2 decades. Because aircraft's wings are subjected to more Stress and Wear during continuous operations.
cheers - glad you enjoyed it
My turbulent flight was on an A320 from Sydney to Ballina-Byron bay airport. The captain also gave us a warning and the wings were shaking violently. The landing was rough as well.
Hi Paul, great to see you again. Greetings from the Netherlands🇱🇺
Cheers Loes
Hi Paul, welcome back to the skies! The new gopro is working a treat!
Cheers mate
Seeing green gear down and locked lights is what gives me pleasure.
Sounds like you're in the flight deck! :)
@@PaulStewartAviation Yes panoramic windows, good seats and very little likely-hood of missing the flight.
@@paulmcphie1596 hah true. What do you fly?
@@PaulStewartAviation Nothing at the moment thanks to The China Flu, now that I'm 60 I'd say that I've runout of runway.
@@paulmcphie1596 :(
I’ve flown on the Dash 8 100 series from Melbourne to Burnie/Wynyard - 36 seater. Sadly Qantaslink pulled out of Wynyard in 2006 although Qantas recently have ramped up their regional services since Rex decided to go into capital city runs. I love the sound of the Dash 8s.
Yep they're pretty cool aircraft
HEY PAUL, YOU'RE RE-WELCOMED TO SYDNEY, AND TO Y'ALL, Q300 FLIGHT VIEWERS, ENJOY FLYIN'!!
Cheers mate! Once we get this travel bubble going I hope to head over across the Dutch and get onboard some of those NZ turboprops :)
@@PaulStewartAviation Same here I'll love the try out the Dash 8s and the 717 😁😁
@@PaulStewartAviation the Q300 figuration was changed in NZ to allow more freight room down the back. The galley that is at the back was moved to the front where the backward facing seats are.
Very nice. 👍
I was meant to fly to Port Macquarie with QantasLink at Easter ... but of course interstate borders shut down. Hopefully 2021. 🤞🏽
Hopefully easter next year :)
Yes yes yes, I’ve been missing you welcome backkkk
Cheers mate :)
Cheers mate
I was on a United 767 out of Heathrow and over Dublin we were going through some really crazy turbulence, and we even dropped some quite abruptly. You’re not alone, I binge watch Dash 8 videos for landing gear footage. BTW love your RM Williams, thinking about getting myself some, despite being an ardent fan of cowboy boots.
haha cheers mate
@@PaulStewartAviation only been on a Dash 8 once in my life... need to fly to Canada more
Great job Paul love the DHC Dash-8s and De Havilland Canada is easier to say!!
Cheers Caleb
Anyone can review Emirates Business Class, it takes a real UA-camr to review a Dash 8 flight from Port Macquarie to Sydney :-) ! It's great to have a new video from you Paul. You don't just entertain, you educate and I love that about your videos.
Cheers David
Welcome back Paul.
Cheers Tim
A classy and capable plane
Port Macquarie International? is it really international airport? You are not weird, I have a fascination with landing gears as well.
haha
Haha Interstate ie Canberra.
Cheers
Great video Paul!
Cheers Jeffery
I flew on Dash 8 400 from Salzburg to Vienna by Tyrolean/Austrian airlines. After years of jets it was surprisingly smooth. The pilots were from Ukraine and previously worked for Antonov.
Hi there. A lovely video here. Would you know if Port Macquarie has a control tower or is it still pilot coordinated traffic procedures? Was a pretty busy airport when I was in flying school ❤
I love that seat on the dash-8s as well, best seat in the house! :)
I've always wondered what the mix of point-to-point vs connecting traffic is on the Port - Sydney flights is. By the time you factor in getting to and from the airport and check in business, if you aren't connecting onwards then time savings of flying must be getting pretty modest, especially as the Pacific Highway upgrades continue.
Hey mate, to be honest I doubt very little if any pax would be connecting unless they're an avgeek like me haha.
Nice video. A couple of my flights to and from Hong Kong involved Typhoons.
Cheers Patrick. yep I've had a rough landing into HKG with a typhoon off the coast.
Absolutely! I think HARS in Wollongong have an F27 they're restoring to airworthiness so I look forward to hearing it! :)
Many thanks!
Have preordered the Geminijets -200 model, hopefully they will make -300 too!
Ohh nice!
Nice Footage there Paul..
Cheers Steve
Nothing wrong with a turbo prop. Last week I flew on an Air NZ Q300 of a 35 minute flight from Kerikeri (Bay of Islands) to Auckland, traveling at 12,000 ft. Great flight with a friendly flight deck and cabin crew. Being a small regional airport, Kerikeri airport has a new terminal building with good views of the runaway and apron. No self check in but the old fashion check in by 2 ground staff like in the old days when flying was adventure :)
Nice! You would have got some great views on that flight Chris!
Thank you for the video I wanted to go on a plane but it like I’m on a plane when I watch you thank you and I sub and notifications on
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Love those vortexes
Absolutely!
Like the ramp to the entry door rather than steps, much easier for the less mobile patrons.
Yep but you better keep it away from Donald as he struggles with ramps sometimes. :)
Paul Stewart 😂😂😂😂
I love this taxi sound
Mmmm. That turboprop hum. Love it.
Don't love that so many others around you were without a mask. :(
I was a little surprised tbh
Hi Paul....nice little plane!!!
Hi mate
Flying ADL-MLB tomorrow on a Dash8, seat 4D so this video is quite timely. I can't remember the last time I flew, it was years not months ago. I love planes but hate flying which is quite ironic having been in the RAAF for many years, Not everybody gets to fly in the RAAF, somebody has to keep the planes in the air.
Good to see you back and are those boots RM’s .......
Cheers and yes they are
I can't wait paul!
cheers
Paul great vlog as always !
Flying facing the cabin isn’t that bad done it a few times
Thanks Ted
Yeah coming into Rockhampton in a q-400 got really rough
Lovely footage coming back into Sydney, and I agree about the landing gear. Looks a little bouncy. I’ve never flown the Q300 or 400, and maybe it was even a 100 I flew on, when it was still a Boeing aircraft (Boeing bought DHC, then sold it to Bombardier)
Cheers Kent
