A word of warning. I used this method to complete a single Bally MPU repair (with significant damage - 200 components to replace) in 2000 and ended up with a life-long illness as a result. Use fume extraction, mask, whatever it takes not to breathe in the fumes especially from sanding the board. Serious, serious stuff. No excuses.
In college I worked in chemistry labs w/ this type of stuff on electronics research. It's no joke! Be a dork and go hard on the safety b/c some of the side effects are wretched.
I'm actually a little surprised that the video owner hasn't made comment on this or put anything extra in his description considering his own reckless attitude toward breathing poison. I think that goes to show how much he cares about his audience, that not only did the top comment warning everyone about safety not even get liked by the creator, but that he really only wants comments to boost engagement. He mustn't read them at all. First and last video for me based on all that. At least he'll never read my criticism, and if he does, I'll be asking why he didn't at least like your comment until someone asked him why he didn't like your comment.
Also, please wear laboratory specs/safety goggles! If any of this shit ends up in your eyes, you will have a bad time. Sorry to hear about your health problems OP, but I'm glad you stopped by to offer these words of warning. Always read the MSDS!
@@t.n.3819 as per my comment above yours, I totally agree. To the point that I just reported this video for self harm/dangerous acts. I suggest you do the same!
Nice to see the younger generation get into these older games and it's great to see you teaching the even younger generations how to do things properly.
Would this method work for electrolytic capacitor corrosion too? I have a badly corroded board due to leaked out SMD capacitors. Could I use this technique? I already tried white vinegar and alcohol, none of them did much. Is the gunk from capacitors is alkaline too, so this acid would neutralize it?
Great video! Thumbs up! 2 questions though: I missed it, also after reviewing it several times, but what kind of desolder iron do you use? And blowing away the tin out of the vias using silicone tubing, what does that in practise look like? Anyway, one subscriber added.
Hi Jason, thanks for this video. I’m learning and this was very helpful. I have about 10 project games, the most challenging I received yesterday and had noooo idea what I was getting myself into…Addams family generator… battery damage, no schematics, nobody still services the boards, no parts out there…but I won’t give up. I would like to see this machine run for my father, he loves Addams family. You and I are likely from the same generation plans it’s great to see all the stuff you’ve worked on here in your channel. I hope to one day be as good as you and comfortable with all the various types of repairs. The battery damage and smoke fluid dripping on the pcb from the smoke generator has done some damage but hopefully I can plan things out and fix it. The good news is I hear the music when it powers on so possibly the game rom is ok. Talk about being in the dark though…I only have the photos found in forums talking about similar issues but everything is so dated. Everyone has moved on. I’m late to the party apparently, who knows, maybe I will discover things to help future generations working on this game
Awsomw video this is just what I was looking for I just picked up my first arcade game (a pole position cockpit) and need to do this around the battery area as well but Do you leave it copper or do you paint back over it with a coating of some sort ?
Do you still repair pcb. I have 2 anilam crusader m cnc controll boards. 1990s that need some work. 1 wont post and the other works but has some damage from a battery leaking in edition the memory needs upgraded i have all prints and schems. Also is it possible to upgrade a volitile 8x8k 36u sram to nonvolatile memory chips. The chips in it are sony 6144 CXk5864PN-15L. The ones i was thinking if replacing with are BQ4010YMA-150
Videos are freaking amazing bro awesome!!I have a stargate that stop working so I looked to find a problem & batteries are just rusted looking around & battery base is the same , what’s the best fix on that?
I have an NES front loader i'm working on now that had major rust a corrosion damage. I think a dog peed on it many years ago. But i am facing the same repairs with a lot of the top coating having been stripped. I now feel a lot more comfortable doing the repair after watching your video. Now will you use some form of conformal coating on the board now that your repair work was complete?
I love your vids...VERY informative so thank you. I didn’t subscribe till just now because I don’t know how UA-cam works. Anyways, is there a method after cleaning the board to color the traces back to green from the copper during repairs?
Did you ever post the final video showing the completed board? I have an Omega Race, with the damage going to the left of the battery. (Not down, like this one.)
I have a small board who have gotten a little battery damage ... looks like its superficial. Will this be a good method for cleaning it up or should i use vinegear? What is the excact formula of your pcb echant?
Hey jason nice vid as always. Waiting for some tips on fix soldering contacts for eproms. Did some damage on a old mvs cartridge and want to know a better way to fix it.
hopefully you bought a desoldering gun and didn't keep watching this guy with his zero safety warnings on a video where he literally frees acid into a very dangerous gas inside his house.
Keep in mind people, discharge your larger capacitors, if your gonna do solder rework, or replace electronic components. I made that mistake when I replaced the 72 pin cartridge connector to my brother’s NES. I used soler wick, and, it shorted a charged capacitor to a chip, and rendered the board completely useless. Be careful. Use a solder sucking iron, or a solder vacuum gun.
Just use vinegar and cotton swab, wait 1 minute, then clean with isopropyl alcohol, repeat and be patient and no harm to you or board. Cheap, easy, simple. I managed to clean modern multimeter with SMD components like that.
Amazingly explained thank you. Do you know where 'brown spills' come from? It looks like chocolate. Gotta fix something myself, don't know where it comes from. Thanks for a great video. Helped alot.
God i wish i knew someone with your skills for arcade repair up here in Ontario Canada. Ive got two Frog PCBs that I need to get one working out out of between the two. Any ideas on what would cause a garbled screen issues. The first one I got the guy said it was working then went garbled on him after a bit of testing so he just gave it too me if i wanted to find someone to work on it. The second one i picked up off ebay for parts hoping that its just a bad rom and i can swap the roms between the boards for a quick fix. Also like other have stated keep the videos coming im learning a little bit more with each one.
i never worked on a frog pcb before but i would suggest these things......... test ram and roms and cpu buffers check for clock trace down the watch dog circuit not much help i know lol thanks for watching man
hey men, when you used sandpaper, the UA-cam translator counted it as music =) next time use sandpaper a little less rhythmically (probably UA-cam thought you were playing beatbox) lol =)
I ended up here looking to fix a damaged board from a Bobsweep robotic sweeper/mop. I wish I could speak with someone who understands what I'm looking at. If you care to see, I'd love to show you a picture of it.
vinegar and baking soda are just as good and won't damage the board further like a pure ferric chloride solution would. that stuff is more damaging to copper traces and components than battery acid!
baking soda neutralizes the vinegar so it would make no sense to mix them. several types of acids are fine the difference is how long each of them are used.
@@ArcadeJason I know thats why you add the baking soda to soak up the acid and use it as a mild abrasive scrub. Don't leave it soaking, just scrub away the all the crud and oxidization with the mixture. ferric chloride will eat copper within minutes but vinegar won't.
very cool this makes me feel much more confident in fixing something like this myself. I have an Amiga 2000 with a leaky varta i need to pull and neutralize.
I love your repair videos. I think I've watch all your older videos but I don't remember seeing one that talked about how you got in the hobby, how your learned all this stuff, how long you've been collecting - stuff like that. well ill have an omega race pcb repair vid probably by next weekend thanks for watching man
You'll only learn how to blind yourself or burn your lungs for life on this channel, I suggest going elsewhere
This was a really great help with my current restoration, worked a treat.

I already tried white vinegar and alcohol, none of them did much. Is the gunk from capacitors is alkaline too, so this acid would neutralize it?
Do you use some sort of enamel to repaint, or re-insulate the now exposed traces????
Keep the videos coming, can't wait to see how this turns out. I need to do this to my pole position board.
did you add solder mask back over the traces after cleaning them?
Great video! Thumbs up!

Is there a part 2 to this board?
What liquid did you put on it to clean it?
Hi sir, is this iron chloride? I didn't understand the product you are using
Can't the sandpaper damage the board?

Amen on the conformal coating. This repair job left a ton of exposed copper, and if that’s not quickly protected, it’s all going to rot away.
My board has extensive boarder copper corrosion.
How do I fix that"¿
Another great video! Thanks Jason. Now I'm driving around Rochester looking for a Radio Shack in 2018.
I feel ya lol
Perfect video. I didn't know you can rinse the motherboard with water and even better with distilled one. Thank you very much, that really helped.
Only distilled water
What is the name for that "pen" tool that you used to brush/rub vias?
I already got it. I watched that video again. It's called fiberglass pen.
Another great video. After cleaning, the traces are all exposed, is there another step to protectively coat them with something?
they do sell solder mask it can be painted back on
I've used clear nail polish.
easy to remove later with acetone
I have a lot of your videos to watch to catch up

Super good work. I can tell you have done a few. Great info and technique. I subscribed.
Geez, I really sent you a doozie. If you get it working Jason, you should receive a Nobel prize.
Great Job Jason....Thanks for the information !
thanks Jim
Do you also do the back?
if it needs it this board was ok
Yep awesome video Jason ! very helpful indeed ;-)
