The game isn't perfect, but it got a lot more hate than it deserved. Your review is one of the most balanced explanations of good and bad that I've seen, so thank you! One of the game mechanics I enjoyed was how the spell challenges encouraged you to try out all the magic and figure out what worked best for your play style (like Prime my beloved murder rock). But at it's heart, the game is also telling a story. It's about Frey, and so you have to understand who Frey is for the story beats to make sense. It's not a self-insertion or make your own avatar type game, and I think some of the disappointment comes from folks expecting one and getting the other.

Hate is an emotion, its not an action nor a form of dialectic. Seriously, do you have the mental capacity of a two year old. why do you repeat tv catches that mean absolutely fucking nothing. Nothing at all. Zero. You didnt even say anything. You just repeated catch phrases that have no basis in reality or existence because they're propaganda. Again, hate is an emotion, its not an action, its not dialectic. You are defining this, you are categorize them, you are dehumanizing them. YOU ARE THE ONE MAKING THIS ALL UP IN YOUR HEAD. YOU are the one saying they are unworthy of being listened to because of the label that YOU put on them in your overly emotional state. You are projecting and you are a communist, its very clear to people with functional iq levels
I like it, too. Okay, I'm not blind to it having the short-comings. The storyline could stand to be expanded-upon (but I get that there's only so-much room on a PS5 disk). And I have some ideas to expand upon what Frey could do...
On sale on PlayStation store for 20 bucks and the dlc is 3 bucks. I’m going to try out the demo tonight and see if it’s worth it. Most likely buying it because I don’t get the hate
I’m not going to lie the game is good it’s not great or amazing but it is good I just think people didn’t look at the gameplay and just focused on the main character but hey I got the game for 13$ soooo worth it.
that's the point. it all goes down to what one is willing to pay. obviously if you paid $70 you would be less enthusiastic. I gor Callisto Protocol for $7 and I enjoyed it. But people who paid $80 have the right to be upset or disappointed
Thx man, great honest review. I got this game on PS5 sale last December for around $30 and I think it's totally worth it. I played it on Raytracing quality without any glitches or issues; absolutely stunning. Last night finished the Story mode (30h) and looking forward to exploring the rest of the map. Maybe parts of the open world could be livelier, but believable as part of what the story tells. In the remainder of my quest I'll explore and utilize the various spell systems more to add variety to the gameplay.
Should've been smaller, better combat arenas its sad that we probably won't get a redo or a sequal as far as the dialogue i didn't mind cause it in some way made sense cause she was brought here and lets be honest alot of people would probably be the same way as far as the actual besides the limits for no reason i enjoyed the variety of them
I fully agree. Now with the loading time issues mediated, the game is good, and especially the twist at the end is great. Plus: people might complain that Frey behaves selfish and swears a lot, but she is a kid from the street that needed to fight for herself all the time. She's just portraied as she should be.
This is a great channel idea. Maybe make a new channel that specializes in just this? I had trouble finding other videos of yours in this style, hence why I recommend this

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide a balanced review of this game called Forspoken. I believe that one of the hard things for many to relate to is that this is a story about a person who grew up on the streets. If you've had any type of normal life growing up your cultural bias will kick in and you'll miss the subtle but often poignant affect this has on Frey's view of the world around her. Too often in the reviews I've watched for this game, the people reviewing it appear to be critical over a game it becomes apparent they have had little experience playing. I bought this during the Steam Summer Sale, I now have 128 hours in on the game. Of course there are several things that contribute to it. One, I relate to the character having grown up part of my life as a street urchin. Two, I recently celebrated seventy one candles so I am from a generation whose view of the world around them is quite different from many who play this or have reviewed it. I would like to end by providing some additional perspective below on the story and an offer to many that life is often not a black or white decision. More often then not, there are colors of a different sort that influence a story, a person's choices, and the outcomes the experience. Forspoken - The Story “Forspoken: First, the word choice itself says a lot concerning what the story is about. Forspoken means to predict, foresee, to arrange or speak of in advance. It also meant to attract and fascinate; enchant or cast a spell over. Its origins are an old Scottish archaic meaning to bewitch.” “What is Forspoken about, it is a story about a girl, born as an orphan raised in foster care in New York City. It’s about choice and how she found her own journey to the streets after being abused by those who were supposed to care and raise her by the courts of New York City. It is about a smart street girl who is compassionate but also angry about what fate has given her. It’s about a young lady who has the capacity to show kindness to those in need, human or animal, but as often as street life can do, it leads her to petty crimes. Those petty crimes find her in front of a judge who must determine her fate. It was almost Christmas day and right before Fray turned twenty-one, the judge showed her kindness and mercy by allowing her off with just a sentence of community service. By doing so, the judge inadvertently sets Fray on a course with her destiny. The story is surprising at times, it is full of touching moments. It has all the things that make the hero’s quest worth taking the journey for. What is the hero’s quest? In story writing or telling, it is also known as the hero’s journey or the monomyth. In simple terms, it is a story about a person that through a series of adventures, becomes victorious in a crisis, and comes home changed or transformed. Story telling: “This is a story about hope, although the story about people growing up on the streets of any big city are common enough, I would challenge the person who plays this game or watches this play through to consider what it would be like if it were you who was homeless. Consider the perspective through that person’s eyes. A world that has abandoned her since birth on the streets, nowhere to go, not knowing what they would do for food that day, how do they stay warm in the winter or cool in the summer?” “This is a story about a person overcoming a hard start in life, about someone despite having the worst that life can throw at you, still having a heart that cares a great deal about people and animals. This is about overcoming personal conflict rising from a somewhat tainted experience of what life is, verses what it was meant to be. It is in fact, the hero’s quest, where one person can not only change themselves but change the lives of everyone else to a place of hope, not failure and loss.” Final Take Away: “The path to understanding requires a person to shed the illusions of sight, listen with empathy, and unlearn their cultural biases. Through servitude to kindness, compassion, and non-judgmental knowledge, we can begin to embrace the value of the journey, to break free from the limitations of identity. “
The protagonist matters to me. If the protagonist is mute, the story comes second. I did like what i saw of the gameplay but due to the aforementioned reasons i dont think ill spend any time on it.
Gameplay: 9.5/10 (gets exponentially better as you learn and upgrade more spells) Performance: 6.5/10 on PC (passable but the frame drops and long load times are real) Story: 7/10 (believable story and dialogue, and a very intriguing lore, but the story’s emotional beats didn’t feel as compelling as in other games) Graphics: 6/10 (can’t really enjoy the visuals because the graphics have to be reduced for the sake of performance) Other Comments: I personally loved the banter between Frey and Cuff, to the point that, during a long segment when that banter wasn’t happening, I actually missed having it around. But for those who maybe don’t like that, there is a setting to reduce its frequency. I ADORED the boss fights against Tantas Sila and Prav. The move sets and behaviors changed noticeably between phases, and though they were both challenging, they were extremely fun and engaging challenges, and defeating them feels like a great achievement. The final boss fight, by comparison, was a bit of a letdown. It erred more on the side of “hard for hard’s sake,” which contrasted with the “hard for fun’s sake” I experienced in other boss fights. The clothing upgrade system is something that is easily missed, but makes a massive difference if you take the time to work it up. For example, I had no idea until post game that the hard stats could be upgraded directly - crafting wasn’t confined to adding 3-4 special effects to your cloak and necklace. Speaking of effects, I wish they had a system for automatically switching your cloak and necklace when switching between magic types. Some effects favored one magic type over others, so being able to have this freedom would have been an amazing improvement to the overall experience. The magic types each play very differently from one another, evoking a feel similar to the subclasses from Destiny 2. Purple magic is your first experience, red is melee-focused, blue excels in level, open spaces, and green magic rewards you for chaining your basic attack with your charged attacks. Overall assessment: a hidden gem in terms of gameplay and movement, with a unique world of discoverable lore, hindered mostly by poor PC optimization and a passable main story.
Just wanted to say THANK YOU! I really appreciate this game and it was really fun. The combat in this game is the coolest out of any game I've played including 10/10 games like GOW and Spiderman. The traversal is incredible, especially on water. The character, Frey, was annoying at some points but I can't blame her since I would also want to escape a world if it had break storms lmfao. Her character was realistic and that made it a fresh experience. It wasn't a 10/10 game maybe more like an 8 but I feel that a potential sequel could be a 10. This world has so much potential it would be sad if it gets shelved forever.
Make your money worth it by actually playing pass the intro and beating the game!🙏🏽 Edit: It may not be the best game but as long as you get some enjoyment out of it.😊
Is this game worth playing now? Yes. For $20, it's a pretty good game. However, the game we got at $70 was terrible. I'm not sure how you can be impressed with the story because it's all over the place. Frey is nice to look at, but she's not really an interesting character. Her main motivation for the first 2/3s of the game was to go back home to her terrible life in New York, which just blew my mind because she was literally homeless, with no money (because she was stupid enough to let it burn), a criminal record, and a gang trying to kill her. When she finally found a place where people ACTUALLY wanted her, what did she do? She rejected them because.....she has issues? I mean she was mean to people for no good reason at all. And then she didn't even earn anything, it was her birthright, so her big coming to be moment felt unearned and anticlimactic. The overall story COULD have been interesting if they had actually showed it instead of delivering it in a giant wall of text. For example, the Flashback challenges were a PERFECT opportunity to tie in the lore of the world into an active challenge. Instead of getting a small 30 second cutscene showing what happened in that location in the past, they just give you a giant text dump that's optional, which essentially just turns the challenges into mini-games with no context. They did a lot of "tell don't show" and it's supposed to be the opposite, "show don't tell." The music is bland an uninspiring with only 3 or 4 songs actually being good, while the rest just sounds like generic elevator/hold music. I could go more into it, but I'll stop there. The hate this game got was well-deserved because they charged $70 for an incomplete game. At least Final Fantasy 15 did some dramatic changes with the Royal edition, like making your side characters actually playable. This game just doesn't do anything, but since the game is only $20 now, I do recommend playing it because the magic parkour is really fun.
You weren't paying attention to the story because Athia is horrible lol. Her introduction to the place was break storms, demons and a giant dragon, the very first people she meets knock her out and imprison her what sane person would want to stay there??? On top of all that the vast majority of the world is dead because the break killed everyone I would rather deal with the streets of NY over all that any day. She was mean because she was a homeless loner with no family or friends and the only reason they "wanted her" was because they needed someone to risk their life to protect them they didn't just like her for her. She had plenty of character growth over the course of the game the ending shows this by giving her the choice to leave and let everyone die or stay and fight a lot of y'all just didn't want to like the character from the start. I agree with you about the flashback challenges but I actually enjoyed the music so I disagree with that also. As for the rest of the comment look at the title of the video and listen to the intro and outro NOWHERE did I say this game was worth full price in this video and to be honest THE VAST MAJORITY OF GAMES ARE INCOMPLETE AT LAUNCH. It's weird how people are only fixated on trashing this game for what the entire industry is doing and if y'all hate the story and character so much why even click on the video????
@@Dark-Shinobi You're making an argument stating that because most games do it, it's ok. It's not. It's never been ok, and people are fed up with it. AAA game sales have been horrible these past few years for that exact reason. But using that argument in the first place is weak because each have needs to be looked at on it's own. As for the story, it literally changes nothing about what I said. Frey is a horrible character who made horrible decisions. The world was bleak and empty, but just saying "the break destroyed everything" isn't an excuse. In fact, it only proves my point about bad story telling. The story was delivered mostly through large text dumps. That's a problem. Rather than showing you all this back story, they just gave you an encyclopedia. You know what game did story telling better than this? Final Fantasy 16. Not only was Final Fantasy mostly show don't tell, but they also included a journal/chronicles section for those who wanted a little more detail, or to recap events since the game is kinda long. Both games published by the same company, yet one game has good storytelling and the other is Forspoken. For crying out loud, the end part of the game it's a big story dump with a blank white screen and narration. LITERALLY DOING TELL DON'T SHOW. FF16 wasn't perfect, but it was leagues better in storytelling than Forspoken. The game was not good. The game still isn't good, but since it's only $20 now, it's definitely worth checking out. For $20, it's playable, but for $70, it's a rip off. Even now, after all the patches, the game still isn't very good. None of the major problems were addressed, and they only fixed performance issues and bugs. The game has potential to be amazing, but it ended up being below average.
Why did you even click on this video then??? Y'all be low-key lonely as hell desperately looking for people to argue with this ain't the channel for that bruh. I don't care enough to read all that if you hate the game so much STOP WATCHING VIDEOS ABOUT IT that simple.
@@Dark-Shinobi I didn't click on the video at all. I ended up here by just leaving UA-cam on autoplay. Even if I had clicked on your video, you're acting like I'm criticizing YOU. I'm NOT criticizing YOU nor am I criticizing your video, I'm talking about the game. Despite that, you got personal over a dissenting opinion. Because of that, I have to be emphatic. If you can't handle opinions like mine, then you shouldn't be a content creator. What I said wasn't even mean, nor was it even geared towards you, but you took it personally anyways. If you don't want replies to your opinion, then don't give your opinion. If you're looking to live in an echo chamber, then turn off comments. No matter what take you have, everyone isn't going to agree with you, and that's something you're going to have to accept if you want to be on the internet. Grow some thick skin, or stop making videos.
I have no issue with differing opinions you just seem to completely hate this game to the point that your attacking anything positive I've said about it. Reread you comments your straight up telling me my opinion is wrong because I like the story or the music this is a two way street here and I'm just picking up the vide your sending out. If you want to have a civilized discussion about the game cool but you have to acknowledge what I'm saying without writing it off. Trust me I got thick skin as a creator lol you wouldn't be able to comment if I was mad or offended by anything you've said.
Its always been worth playing! That awful demo is NOT a true rep of the full game.Frey is so fluid and feels great to control and traversing! The same cannot be said for stellar blade or Wu kong...funny no one mentions this though... This is a good adventure game that is worthy of your time.
My only complaint is how boring and repetitive it gets. Enemies are extremely predictable and sometimes can't even hurt you if you just move around enough. The world feels dead as well. I'm not saying go RDR2 world building level buy it is very stale.
It's actually worse when there's not just lame protagonist, but horrid characters litering the world. Take Shadow of Mordor, with the wooden plank that you operate, and the cinderblock stuck up it's butt. Both horrid pieces of turd, but the others? Have you ever listened to the orcs banter? To hear an orc complain that he doesn't actually like killing, but would much prefer doing other things in the camp is just... nice. Again you can just skip through a boring protagonist, cuz they usually only speak in cutscenes, but you can't do that when every god damned thing on the map is a reason to commit mass murder.
I think what they tried is a western character doing a JRPG role. If it had been a Full fledged JRPG thode lame lines would have sounded fun from a Japanese character view.
I just find it funny how people give 10’s to the Zelda’s, The Final Fantasy’s and many other franchises when most of those games feel exactly like Forspoken, now! This review shows another inconsistency with reality and expectations. Breath of The Wild AND Tears of The Kingdom are both bloated messes and have open worlds that are too big.. gamers don’t like change. It’s as simple as that 😂😂😂
uninspired and dead. The main 3 tantas fights were the highlight of the game. The world was lack luster, with very boring side quest. After defeating Tanta Olas I was already burnt out at 40 hours. I just wanted to finish the game and get on with my life. I even skipped the final boss, but then replayed it to beat him on easy lol. Oh one more thing. The voiceovers were the worst I’ve heard.
I played the demo and i do wwant to buy this but my issue with the game is Freys constant bit@hing, swearing and just rotten attitude towards NPCs and the world... i can swear as bad as the next guy, but seriously, her attitude stinks.. and it irritates the hell outta me..
I feel like no one is looking at this from a realistic point of view she was transported to another dimension with no way home that along with her back story all explain the attitude. She volunteered to save countless people and even avenge someone she barely knew, telling someone F.... You because your literally bleeding out and they want you go kill more people isn't being rotten (highly relatable to me personally). I feel like people are being hyper sensitive towards her character and dialogue, the way you described her character encapsulates the people that complain about her perfectly. If you made your mind up about hating the character then their is no reason to play the game, I gave this a chance bias free and thoroughly enjoyed the game and character thanks for watching.
@@Dark-Shinobi Thanks for replying but Ive actually had a chance to play the full game properly and im going to do a 180.. im actually enjoying this 😊.. i picked it up pre-owned.. and when i actually played it properly and got into the game from the beginning.. i actually now understand why Frey is the way she is and talks like she does .. it all makes sense, her and cuff dialogue is really quite hilarious in parts, in fact, ive actually grown to quite like her as a character, shes actually really likable after a while.. Another bonus is the game is quite tough and challenging in parts. so yeah.. its pretty good and im enjoying it that much, i grabbed the DLC in the PSN sale.. i will always admit if im proven wrong and this is one of those times.. im pleased i give it another shot, but.. the demo does or the early reviews do not do it justice.. Thanks for the reply buddy.. 👍

I bought this game for 15 euros for ps5 from a mall in Germany and it's actually pretty fun, the movement doesn't feel floaty at all which I enjoy

Graphics: 6/10 (can’t really enjoy the visuals because the graphics have to be reduced for the sake of performance)
Other Comments:
I personally loved the banter between Frey and Cuff, to the point that, during a long segment when that banter wasn’t happening, I actually missed having it around.
Thanks man I'm glad you liked the video and enjoyed the game, I'm still hoping this gets a sequel also.
@@Dark-Shinobi Keep doing what you're doing. You're channel is really underrated and I hope it expIodes in popularity soon.
It's a 6/10 game and people act like it commited murder 😂😂
I enjoyed the game
I love dis game
I don’t know man should I get it
Depends on what type of games you like, if you can find it for a good price go for it.
I bought this yesterday for $5. I figured there's almost no AAA title that's NOT worth $5. Despite what people say about it
If they released a mod that did nothing but start the game halfway through, I think a lot more people would love it 🤣
No, new game plus+ mode , now that’s lacking! Every game should have this after completing the game at least once.
It has new game plus but it's different from the norm. Idk if it has the traditional version of it though.
I absolutely agree. It hearts my heart that a lot games don't have new game plus in this day and age.
I wouldn’t mind a The Flash ⚡️ mod to replace the main character, 😅😅😅, I played the Demo , but umm
I never finished the intro and still regret those $70
Suckerrrrr. 😆
Make your money worth it by actually playing pass the intro and beating the game!🙏🏽
Edit: It may not be the best game but as long as you get some enjoyment out of it.😊
Great review. I'll pass on this one.
Thank you, more coming soon.
An annoying character is an annoying character, there's no fixing a lame protagonist.
@shigaxn Too bad you're wrong.
I think what they tried is a western character doing a JRPG role. If it had been a Full fledged JRPG thode lame lines would have sounded fun from a Japanese character view.
🫵🤡 no, you're the one who's wrong. Faye is lame af@@bigblujay9729
so reading all the reviews ive come to the conclusion : the game is worth 10$ lol
It’s as simple as that 😂😂😂
Did you watch the whole video? I actually liked this game but I'm always going to be brutally honest with my full game reviews.
uninspired and dead.
NO
I played the demo and i do wwant to buy this but my issue with the game is Freys constant bit@hing, swearing and just rotten attitude towards NPCs and the world... i can swear as bad as the next guy, but seriously, her attitude stinks.. and it irritates the hell outta me..
They patched out the protagonist? Then maybe...
1 year later:
Dev studio: lol get scammed
No
The story sucks ass.
Nah. I got to admit, I hate the protagonist.
You could have just said no and we would give you a big thumbs up. It will never be worth playing
