Mozart: String Quartet No. 19, Dissonance | Gewandhaus Quartet

- Mozart with dissonances in a Baroque castle: The Gewandhaus Quartet played the String Quartet No. 19 in C major (K. 465), the “Dissonances Quartet” in the stylish ambience of the Rammenau Baroque Castle in 2005.
(00:00) I. Adagio - Allegro
(10:00) II. Andante cantabile
(17:30) III. Menuetto - Allegretto
(22:44) IV. Allegro molto
To this day, the epithet “Dissonance Quartet” may be off-putting to some, but it may arouse curiosity in others. Some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s contemporaries (1756 - 1791) thought that the String Quartet No. 19 in C major (K. 465) was faulty: either the notes were set incorrectly or the musicians simply were not playing it properly. Yet Mozart had composed the slow introduction of his 19th string quartet, to which the epithet refers, with the greatest sophistication. Before the main key of the quartet (C major) appears, the strings are “searching” for their actual target key, starting from C minor and wandering through transpositions and tonal frictions.
Mozart completed this unusual string quartet on January 14, 1785. It is one of the six “Haydn Quartets” that were written between 1782 and 1785 and were all dedicated to Joseph Haydn, whom Mozart admired. Haydn’s string quartets Op. 33 had inspired Mozart to write his six quartets. Haydn was even invited to the private performance at Mozart’s home - and is said to have been very impressed by his skill as a composer.
Mozart wrote a total of 23 string quartets, which, although not the focus of his immense oeuvre, remain among the most popular of their genre to this day. The Dissonance Quartet in particular is considered by connoisseurs to be a high point of European chamber music.
The Gewandhaus Quartet (also named Leipzig Gewandhaus Quartet) was founded in 1808 and is considered one of the first professional quartets in the world. It is composed of the soloists and concertmasters of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Numerous premieres of quartets by renowned composers have been performed by the Gewandhaus Quartet.

In my opinion---all Mozart's mature quartets are the most beautiful quartets ever composed...and the daring slow opening of this quartet is looking 100 years forward...great performance, playing fast with energy and without much vibrato.
Or rather looking back - it's in Baroque style!

The style yes but the harmonies are definitely ahead of their time

Un inicio que suena a siglo😮 XX?? No es posible. Díganme que es mentira. 😮 Genio absoluto.
I was learning this with my friends in music college for the last two months and that was the best time I ever had studying here. We didn't know each other before but communication between us while playing made us think that we were besties even before we were born. Completely different feelings than sitting in orchestra or playing solo
Thanks for sharing this personal experience with the piece!
That minor key introduction is probably my favorite part of the quartet if I’m being honest, but the rest of it is great too.
still messes me up that the opening sounds shostakovich-y and also the DSCH motif being there too at 0:59. it's like mozart time traveled or something
Magnificent. I first heard this quartet in college. The musician in residence at my dormitory played a record of it and I heard the beginning of the piece. Arnold Schoenberg maybe. No. The piece revealed itself to be Mozart. Astonishing.
Thank you, Gewandhaus Quartet for the great pleasure of listening to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: String Quartet. The setting, interpretation are divine. Was totally captivated. Sharing.
14.30-16.00 in the andante cantabile is truly music of the gods ❤
The moment in the first movement coda when the 2nd violinist starts playing 16th notes is one of the best moments in all of music.
A really good performance
Thanks Mozart
My teacher assigned us quarters and I came to listen to ours. At first, I didn't like the idea of this piece. Mozart isn't my absolute favorite compared to other composers and neither is C Major. BUT when I listened to the minor opening I was immediately on board with it! Your quartet did absolutely beautifully!

You're welcome - nice to hear that you enjoyed it 😊
No better quartet for the six Mozart string quartets dedicated to Haydn. I own the CD set of the Gewandhaus playing these most glorious of Mozart's string quartets. Thank you for posting, DW.
why, did you compare all the other recordings for this quartet?
You're welcome, thanks for being our viewer! ☺
@@prager5046 Yes. I've listened to many string quartets playing the Mozart quartets dedicated to Haydn. I also like the Amadeus string quartet performances.
Thanks for sharing this amazing masterpiece
the beginning gives me bloodborne vibes, and I love it.
Humanity has made many mistakes in the past but this is not one of them. Divine.

GREAT !!!
Excellent.Bravo
Excellente Interpretation!
Nostalgic moment... I miss when mozart was really famous.. Nowadays just like 1/25 of people in the world cares about good music
Classical music has only gotten more famous? Before the 1900's, you pretty had to be rich to enjoy it.
Also the truth is, like 80% has no reason to like western European music at all.
1/80*
Most people in mozarts time didn’t even hear his music
I disagree with you. Most people - who are people - enjoy music like this. All “serious” music has always been confined to the few. Mozart churned out lots of “rubbish” for entertainment’s sake. All composers did (and do). He also produced remarkable work like this - work that challenges and rewards the listener who knows how to hear.
There's "good music" everywhere. Your elitism does nothing to help the popularity of classical music.
Elegant.
This is very beautiful. Thank you Wolfgang Mozart!
It needs harmonies like this in war-times like ours! Thank you DW Classical Music!

Together with the music, you should also post a visual with the musical score! So that people may read the music at the same time
as they listen! Just like another music channel does, but I can't remember its name.....

between Haydn and Mozart, who in your opinion has better knack for writing string quartets? no right or wrong here.
I wonder if Michael Haydn wrote some that we don't know about?
@@philipbrace5804 probably
As someone who tends to prefer baroque or romatic to music of this time and, frankly, think of Mozart as an annoying show-off who often lacks emotional depth, I feel I need to give him another chance, maybe? This quartet is beautiful.
We're glad this video made you give Mozart another chance :)

As Giuseppe Sarti might say, the intro doesn't harmonize.
En France et en Allemagne, c'est le peuple qui a le pouvoir, c'est pour ça que maintenant c'est "Bonjour Monsieur".
Il parle des indigènes, il dit qu'il a rien contre eux.
Recording problem, can't hear the cello ;(

Was that meant to be Dutch? My Italian translation did not make any sense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE OPENING INTRODCTION TO THIS PIECE HAS NEVER PLEASED ME IN ANY REGARD I AM ACCUSTOMED TO DISSONANCE, BUT THIS WRITING IS NOT SUCCESSFUL.
AFTER SO MANY YEARS, IT STILL HAS NOT GROWN ON ME. THE PASSING OF TIME REVEALS ALL, AND IT STILL IS FAR FROM ME.
OK SIR THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASTUTE COMMENT
