I used this driver playing college golf in the late 90s. I had mine set to Tiger's specs (X200 shaft, 43.75" long) and averaged 295yards with it. To me, it was the best sounding driver I've ever owned. I sold it years ago, but still have a backup thats nearly identical.
You do know your losing a ton of yardage because these new balls are designed for the club face to compress as where the old balls were designed for a solid club face and lower compression balls.
I was recently waiting on a new shaft for my 917D3. So I pulled out an original Great Big Bertha I had stashed away, and I've been hitting it around 275-285 total, which is very close to my 917 total yardage. I had a Cobra Deep Face back in the day, and it was around the same yardage as well. If you're a good golfer you can pretty much hit anything relatively well.
I had that same driver, it was a great one. It was actually the Greg Norman driver first and Tiger was a bit of a Norman fan at the time. Things changed.
I had that driver too back in the day and hit it far (because I was young) for the time. I remember that Masters in ‘97 and how far he hit the ball compared to others in the field. He was out driving Colin Montgomery in round 3 by 45-50 yards
Yeah, I remember the exact same thing Greg Norman being well-known to using that driver. It was the face of King Cobra. I enjoyed it a lot at the time but unfortunately after awhile, the face of the club had a developed a hairline face fracture which put an end to using it as it felt weird hitting it after it happened. I think it was most likely build issue.
I had the 5 wood version of this club. Was actually just thinking today about how much I miss it. Even if i lost 15 yards compared to my hybrid or 5 wood I use today, the dispersion on that old cobra was unbeatable
Also keep in mind he was using balata balls which spin much more and don't go as far. If Tiger was 21 right now what on earth would he be averaging in driver distance?? It's scary to even think about.
Was the driver the actual driver used, or did they match the specs? I remember Tiger played that driver head with a True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shaft, 43.5" long? I also remember that he played the Titleist Professional that week.
I think he was using a Tour Professional ball that had the same guts as the Titleist Tour Balata but had a urethane cover. It was closer to the Balata than the ProV1 that followed it but had a little more pop than your standard balata ball. Either way, his distance with steel shafted clubs and those balls is insane.
@@16-bit-trip5yup it was a Titleist professional - 90 compression. Got a ball off fluff in November 1996 at the Australian open. He was using a new ball every hole so there was a fair few getting handed out
It would actually go further. New balls are way harder and not designed for solid face drivers. They are designed for the club face to compress. A 90 or 100 compression ball would go further with that driver
I remember my first titanium drive was that Taylormade Burner with the bubble shaft. Then the next year was the Ti bubble 2 and I remember thinking how big the head seemed. Nowadays it’d be like a 3 wood. I had those bubble shaft irons too. Man I miss being like 20 and hitting the shit out of the ball so easily, now at 47 my back hurts just thinking about 18 holes 😂 😅😢
I think every golfer in the earlier 2000's and earlier were miles ahead of current day golfers in there ability to hit the ball. Golf clubs are getting too forgiving

Also, he wasn’t using the same goofballs we use today.
Tiger was an alien in the 90s.
I think he was using a Titleist Professional if I recall. Not quite as soft as the balata, but nowhere near today's balls in terms of distance.
@@Fezziekid still a wound ball before the solid core of the 2000's

No. Low compression balls are more common now than in the 90s. They lost yardage because of their swings

GBB was my first decent driver as a junior. It felt great out of the centre, a real spring to it.

I still have that driver hanging in the garage

too good! great content bois
Tiger Woods had incredible speed and strength in motion, freakish really. He used that same shaft for years in his driver and 3 wood, DG x100.
Cobra driver then to the Titleist 975 D Both with Dynamic gold steel shafts and 90 compression professional ball 🤦♂️😳
Also keep in mind he was using balata balls which spin much more and don't go as far. If Tiger was 21 right now what on earth would he be averaging in driver distance?? It's scary to even think about.
Tiger was swinging 130+mph on his driver. DGX100 130gram shaft and whoever knows the tipping. Plus the ball was way different as well.
Carried that driver through high school (late 90s) and I loved that club
You should’ve tried to track down that old Titleist PT 3wood. That thing was barely bigger than the ball.
That was the "assistant pro"? I don't think so. 😂😅
assistant greenkeeper
Yeah once I saw that swing … if hes the assistant pro , give me his job
@@JamesBeattie-lz9cc Calling him the "assistant pro" must have been a joke.

Remember Tiger was also using a balata ball in 97. 320 is god like given the variables

Are they using meters or yards?
Try it with a 30 year old ball

I use to avg about 270 with that driver at 28 years old. Now I avg about 285 at 54
There's a reason for that too.
There's a reason for that too.
@@1974jrod yes I know, but I think it has more to do with the ball than the driver. I was using the Titleist professional 90 back then, ProV1 now
This thumbnail tho 😂😂😂
The balls today are more forgiving than years ago
be interesting to see something around the same time as the driver
I was still hitting Persimmon back in 97😢
I used this driver until I got the Taylor made Bubble. Greg Norman played the same Driver

Bought an old TM firesole driver with bubble, problem is they require special grips
I carried an OG big Bertha 280 at 5’9” 165. But now I’m 50 so those days are long gone
The guess at 1.49... is all of us lol

I have a driver like that that il use once in a while for the fun of it
Golf balls today are not meant for that club. However, That Tiger was the best ever
The OG king cobra was bad ass - if you had it or a big bertha, you were something
I’m pretty sure tigers driver had a bore-thru shaft. The retail ones didn’t
1st!Hi!
Legit
130 club head speed at 21
Imagine if he was in his prime now.
I don't see what the big deal is, I'm 53 yrs old, and had this exact driver (with a different shaft).
how many majors did you win with it?
That wasnt even cutting edge when he used it as titanium drivers were already in use on tour in 1997.
That guy totally looks like a bud light drinker.
“Pro”
Personally, I don't find this all that remarkable considering how far guys hit persimmon woods and golf balls without much technology.
It's not the arrow it's the Indian.
I can give an arrow to an Indian that he couldn't hit a barn from fifty yards.
