Maybe to you, Tom. We have the Liberals and NDP whose entire ethos is to spend money we don't have on highly dubious causes. They call it "investing In Canadians" to play to those too dumb to figure it out. We already spend well over $100 Billion on interest on government debt every single year and there is no end to the borrowing. Things cost so much due to yet more dubious government policies that Canadians spend much more on everything than they should. Our taxes at every level are through the roof. Tons of our money goes to places like Ukraine - some $15 Biilion committed and nothing to show for it.

Really Suzy? Tell me when Canada ever met its NATO spending goal? My brother was in the airforce and he was upset in 1970 that even during the time he was in it was going down hill fast. Government spends money on what electors see as priorities. In Canada the military is sadly not a priority for most Canadians. While you are criticiing Trudeau, who I also dislike by the way, tell me what Pierre has said about restoring the military and meeting NATO requirements. It is added to the percentage Canada calls DND spending. This is all added in to what is the our NATO commitment but it is not enough to reach the 2% of GDP.

Canadian Governments have ignored the military for decades and it shows and Trudeau is not helping things by promising aid and not delivering is worse yet. Sad state we put our military in when we spend uncontrollably on far less important issues and priorities. We have lost our way.

It's 2% annual spending that is required. We give to Ukraine and replace.

I was in the Canadian army and hated it. It was a profoundly low brow, boorish culture and plenty of affirmative action hiring. Sexual harassment is also a problem. I had to quit, putting on the uniform and pretending to respect my chain of command made me sick.

Layton’s gains were always an illusion, dear dead saint Jack just benefited from Quebec parking its vote with the NDP because they were pissed at the Liberals at the time. Canada has not met the 2% of GDP for a very long time. An army requires equipment that is expensive but above that it needs manpower. The previous governments slashed spending and reduced recruitment over the last 40 years so this is not a Trudeau problem. It isn’t a liberal problem. Both parties have tried national budget balancing by cutting the Armed Forces budget every year. The procurement system makes it very difficult to multi year purchases. I’ll end this by saying I spent 37 years in the military and watched the decline of our military capabilities and could do nothing about it because the bureaucrats and politicians were in charge.

It's 2% of yearly Gross Domestic Production value but under the liberals since the sixties it's fallen more and more to where we're below that target by over half a percentage point.
