This is almost more performance art rather then straight stand-up. What a brilliant man.
The only man who was happier having people laugh at him rather than with him, but he was laughing with us the whole time whether we knew it or not
So many comics mine for laughs. He taught me; the first rue of comedy is to amuse yourself.
I'd counter that he was always laughing at us.
Everything he did was so meticulously planned. The bad jokes, the awkward body language, the facial reactions. Just a master of his craft.
Ahead of its time definetely!!!
@djohnson6528 Your sense of humor chip must be upgraded. I recommend checking yourself into Engineering immediately. Or maybe you did not see the entire clip.
Lol. What craft? He was AWFUL
@@RareHarmony LOL, he was amazing.
norm at the Saget roast
"Right now, I'd like to do a comedy routine." That opening line is GOLD.
no
How is that gold its hes playing on anxeity easy stuff am i the only one seeing passed this shit?
He could of even said im up here dont no wat im doin u call that gold to i dont find him funny
Dangerz Own if you find him funny then im sure you enjoy laughin at your pop. Vinyl dolls. Im sure they will make one of andy soon enough
Dangerz Own it's a troll. One that likes "yo momma jokes," still.
Brilliant and unique and major balls. He opens his HBO special trying to "reinvent" himself as a traditional observational stand up comedian, he bombs intentionally for 4-5 minutes. Crying while playing the bongos and creating a rythm and ending it with a sort of sarcastic "thank you".
Fucking balls on this guy.
Hugy
holy shit. I just couldn't get what he was eventually leading up to with his whole sad act, but once he started crying and making that inhale noise in rhythm I had a moment of clarity and lost it lol.
That is the magic of Andy Kaufman.
+thefearedESK Indeed. His genius is undeniable.
Same..
Trevor_Diggler me too
Absolutely brilliant, this was a man who knew how to piss off a crowd and go out in a bigger spotlight than than anticipated. He was as unpredictable as he was original. RIP Andy.
rest in peace,? we all hope he gets pranked everyday,,
you can go to heaven today andy,, ha ha ha
This is the first time that I have watched Andy Kaufman stand-up, and it is the first time stand-up has ever given me chills.
His composure is fantastic. I've never seen him lose it or come out of character.
If you wrote this routine out on paper and read it, you would say " This crap will get me tossed off the stage on my ass".
Andy gets an HBO appearance out of it.
He was a genius at reaching people through performance art.
Andy really explained it all in this routine when he said " Why do you boo when i tell my joke and laugh when i do not want you to?"
He based his whole act on that fact and pushed the audience further each appearance to show he could get laughs even if he did nothing funny on stage.
Andy was that little kid from your childhood that annoyed everyone by acting like a brat. He made an act out of it and became a celebrity.
He's a pioneer of weird people
Tim and Eric must have been really into this guy
I've never heard them mention him, but I wonder the same thing.
exactly what I was thinking
***** that makes A LOT of sense
if they took any comedy lessons or courses in college they deffinitely got in depth exposure to him
Colin Evans Who's Tim and Eric?
there's never gonna be anyone like him anymore
You got that right.. you can say that again. You got that right
Coppercab
Nope they all ran out of him
That transtion from crying into that song was fucking genius! 😂😂😂
He's amazing. Just a master at manipulating reactions.
+James Bayly no
+Bob Miles What a detailed, intricate response.
+Bob Miles I know it wasn't, I was being sarcastic.
+Bob Miles no what, Bob?
are you saying he deliberetly made him self booed so he can save it again? that is crazy. its not comedy but very high performance art. the guy knew what he was doing.
Gevork Bagdasarov Andy once said “ I’m not a Comedian, I’ve never told a joke in my life.” He’s a performance artist who’s goal is to illicit a response. Even if that response is disgust or hatred. He felt as if he accomplished something.
That is exactly what Andy was doing. His whole concept of his art was the final result and not the immediate laugh. He played out some of his "jokes" for years before we got it. When I was a kid he confused me but something stuck with me and as an adult, I finally began seeing it long after he had died.
Really...cuz I grew up watching him... Didn't get him then & still trying
The thing I love about Andy is that he was about five steps ahead of everyone. I mean, his genius is that he anticipated audience reaction. Genius, pure genius.
***** hahaha but you my friend, you are funny.
***** that doesn't make it funny though. It makes you feel cool because you think that you get his humor but the truth is he is not funny. Stop acting like you know something special.
when he gets no laughs thats when you know the comedy only gets better
Can I double-like this?
The problem with an act THIS subtle and skills as good as his, is that people don't realize that he's fucking with them until after they see multiple performances. Take for instance Reggie Watts. He is SUCH a good actor that people think he's being serious when they see him the first time.
mebaran
I don't think of that as a problem, the audiences uncomfortable reactions make it so funny. It wouldn't be the same if everyone was in on the joke
MatthewAndThings Agreed. Andy Kaufman was famous (infamous?) was doing jokes that nobody understood until much later (He enjoyed being booed and making people react badly). He was known to come onstage and simply stare at you for long period of times, also like in this video he enjoyed playing shy and confused. His stuns were so strange and insane, that there are still people who believe he faked his death. Though he did indeed die, it wouldn't shock anyone today if he were alive and said here I am. His Elvis impersonations are legendary as is his singing Mighty Mouse act.
+mebaran I think the bigger problem with it is that he did this act, and now it's burned. It was his thing, and now these days when people try to do this type of shit, you can kind of see right through it. If they do it really well and use it to expose hack jokes kind of like the way Dan Klien does it can be entertaining... but it can also bomb and look really lame, too. its sort of a risk and I guess you gotta "know" your audience like Andy did, if you know what I mean ; ]
(ala planting hecklers, etc.)
+Stacie Meier Thanks for the explanation no one needed
Waters you speak as though people value your opinion you are mistaken
Absolutely brilliant, pauses were timed perfectly for effect, even when he purposely bombs, it seems real
The Best anti-comedian. He knew the art of being unfunny where it was the most hilarious shit ever.
well, I think that is a matter of taste and opinion. Quite skilled at his craft no doubt, but personally I find Norm MacDonald much funnier. Not saying that's a fact, just my personal opinion.
A man before his time. Damn he was brilliant.
Man, midway through this it really hard to watch, but he certainly saved himself at the end with those bongos. Certainly is genius, but definitely really weird.
Billy Te thats the point haha
why is that genius?
absolute genius! his magnetic presence completely captivates the audience.
I think he enjoyed attention !
Holy cow! This is hilarious even before he gets on stage! "Ladies and gentlemen, Gallagher!"
Only now do I realize how terrifyingly accurate Jim Carrey's impersonation was
I sadly didn't know who Andy Kaufman was ...:( but after watching him, I can so relate to his humor. I was doing the gibberish thing for the longest time unknowing that he already did it lol!.....Makes me sad that he is not with us anymore :(
Star Light I feel like my whole life I been trying to entertain people not mainly by making them laugh but by making them feel confused and uncomfortable. And I thought that was just some stupid thing I did or I needed help. Then I stumbled upon Jim Carrey in man on the moon (Jim is my fav actor) and I started to watch some of andy kaufman clips and I was like wtf I don’t think I could relate to someone so similarly in that aspect when interacting with people. The same thing happened to me when I saw the Eric Andre show. I felt like I can finally relate to someone. I just don’t understand how people feel like acting cool or acting like something they’re not. It feels so much better to be different and weird than cool and the same. just felt like sharing that I never told no one that. Andy made me feel like it’s ok to be myself.
That was quite a wallop!
Nobody ever used the audience so beautifully.
Tony Leva indeed. he wanted to have all his fans experience different emotions. anger, confusion but ultimately intense joy.
he is good because he knows how to play with peoples emotions
He's so FREAKING great.
He's not a comedian
He's a song and dance man
Great dylan reference
Trolled the crowd so hard
How is that trolling the crowd? Crowd expects a comedian and they get an unfunny sociopath.
@@BW-pr8qr exactly, the jokes were for him to enjoy
he has the hypnotic power of bad tv reception and the conversations we have during it.....he's great!
7:36 "for my next number" gets a bigger reaction than he was expecting. You can tell because he pauses mid sentence and his eyebrows give it away. I think it's because the crowd was still riding the energy from the previous joke.
Andy Kaufman elvis
I've been looking for this for years, thank you so much for uploading!
His comedy is work of art and brain at the same time. He is brilliant comedian
Rest In Peace Andy Kaufman 1949-1984.
He dies at 35?
No he died at 89 in Dubai
@@williamcutrell7456 Yes
Kaufman was one of the greats. Not a comic, but a true showman. I love how he could get a crowd wondering what was going on.
i can't wait to see Tony come along as sing us a classic show tune.
so ahead of his time, he is incredible. as a tim and eric fan, they just ooze kaufman
I think also of Nathan Fielder
Cant believe it's been 35 years this man's been gone. R.i.p. andy.
We think.
whoever you are, and however you got this, thank you so much for up-loading!
Balls of steel to do what he did. Amazing man. RIP Andy!
My favorite Kaufman standup. Genius.
It's funny that every Andy Kaufman video on UA-cam has people who say, "He isn't funny" or "I don't get what makes him so brilliant." It's funny because THOSE people are the brunt of all of his jokes! That's what makes it so funny!
wrong, your a clown. You think you are special because you pretend that you understand his comedy. It sucks. You either pretend you love him or you realize he's playing you. Andy did not care what people though either way and dumb fucks made him rich.
It's a bit hard to put a tag on humor considering most people cant even properly explain what it is. Andy Kaufman was much more entertaining to himself than most people he performed for, because he knew it was all a joke. Thanks to the internet, we know not to expect the truth from him, making it more entertaining. I don't pretend to understand all of his jokes and stunts but they still get a reaction out of me, usually positive. The point is that we don't understand him, that's what he wanted. He performed not just for laughs, but for all kinds of reactions, including yours. Was Andy Kaufman funny? Depends on who you ask, to me, not incredibly. Was Andy Kaufman entertaining? Hell yeah
Mike Miller I understand what makes him funny to most people, it's just not my kind of humor
"thank you very much, that was Gallagher!"
+anmainisto only the best of us will ever follow up gallagher
He had such a sweet voice. He was unique. He was Brilliant.
I've made it my mission to get the kids hooked on Andy's work !!
This is like an advanced form of comedy. I love it
He didn't mean to entertain people...he used people to entertain him that is what makes this man absolutely brilliant and unique.
What an amazing genious Andy was. It warms my heart
OMG!!!!!! The end with the bongos is pure genius!
Thanks for uploading this! The best starting point to get to know Andy Kaufman.
Wow. This dude is a good few decades ahead of the times.
I love how he milks his bombs dry before he moves on.
Comedy like any art, needs to be explored in all capacities. It may not always work for a general audience but I appreciate the exploration of Andy's craft.
This was soul crushing for me. Wow
LOL one of the most brilliant, creative comedians of all time.
Jim Carrey really did a good job playing Andy. I can kinda see a little over acting on Jims part, but still very good.
History has proved he was a genius, he did uncle andys playhouse which was sort of like a kid show for both kids and adults. They ( the studio execs that hated Andy) said it wouldnt work, then PEE WEE herman comes along and does the same thing and makes a career out of it. He does Tony Clifton the obnoxius lounge singer and SNL steals it but gives it to Bill Murry. RIP ANDY. You were way ahead of your time.Wish you were still here.
Andy Kaufman was one of the greatest communicators on the medium "TV". He played with the cliches, he could be a dilettant and in the next moment a brilliant comedian and artist (for example: remember him in adult dipers with turban and his guitar, finally showing a professional sword swallow number or talking and singing gibberish (great communication with the audience) and finishing the whole thing with a short conga solo on professional level) - the hardest thing for his audience, for the fans and even for the ones who loved him was, that they never could foresee, what would happen next. He was an anarchist who made nonsense of everthing, even of the media that fed him. Maybe he was a marginal character for those who expect mainstream-entertainment, but for those who have a faible for the whole art of entertainment he was a tough and wayward border crosser, leading acting, standup comedy and improvisation from icecold to hot and back within a few minutes - sometimes brilliant, often disturbing, especially when you thought, you know, where his performance would lead to. Andy Kaufman will always be a remarkable comedy & TV-artist whose influence has been lasting until today and it will for the future I guess. And thanks to Jim Carrey for his performance as Andy Kaufman in "Man In The Moon" and REM for the congenial titletrack.
This is one of the funniest skits if ever seen Andy you are the bomb
I bet Andy was usually a quiet guy in normal life
YOUR USERNAME IS EVERYTHING
This is how to be frigging ORIGINAL!! I get so much inspiration from this fella.
He's extraordinary. I think it's just how uncompromising he is when portraying a character. He throws himself into his absurd characters with total sincerity.
I am an aspiring comedian and this guy is one of my ultimate inspirations. He was fucking weird but at the same time, an amazing comedian. It's too bad that he died because I think he would have been perfect with tim and eric. I think he was born in the wrong time of comedy but at the same time, pioneered this kind of stuff. Truly magnificent!
This man was a genius.
absolutely
Zach Galifianakis' style reminds me a lot of this routine of awkwardly confronting the audience. Absolutely amazing.
Such a unique form of comedy. He was always thinking outside the box and playing the long con to his audience. He was so convincing with whatever he did. Andy was truly ahead of his time.
"Bottom of the 5th and the bags are loaded." Holy shit that was genius I cracked up 2 minutes after he said it. Love a comedian that can stay 2 steps ahead of the audience
That's because you've seen this style of comedy for years. You were probably raised seeing many people with similar ideas. Do you know why? Because this man invented it. He's inspired generations of comics and brought performance art to the mainstream. THAT is genius.
andy kaufman is the original troll! everybody who says he isnt funny is right because he wasn't really a comedian lol its hard to explain
bigkev23007 Actually Orson Welles was the original troll with his War of The Worlds radio broadcast from 1938.
I agree. He left us all wanting more.
the shit he pulled though! was amazing! mind boggeling! especially for that time.
I'm so glad this was the first Kaufman act I checked out because the end blew my fucking mind.
4:25 hahahha he's so milking it. Some people laughing, some wondering if he's really bombing... hehe
Exquisite comic timing!
You could hear a pin drop in that room. He had them hanging on every word. Genius.
I was on stage with him in 1973 as he played the Old McDonald song and ordered me and two other audience members around. We danced the conga out the side door and came back in the front door. He was funny and threatened us in a kiddingly way if we didn’t comply to his demands. Fun memories.
Wow was it in New York? You are so lucky!
Andy was too smart for most audiences. Only years later have I begun to appreciate his genius.
Either people find him funny or they don't. No one is "too smart" for audiences. Comedy is a special kind of genre where literally, it either "is or isn't"....
"For my next number... "
He's bold, he's gold
it was legendary, he started doing that when comedy was the take my wife jokes. he was an amazing comic who changed comedy
He is a true comedic genius. It is sad that he died from cancer.
thank you so much for this.
The fact that some people actually don't get this joke makes it 10000 times funnier!! hahaha Kaufman was genius. I wish I was alive when he was.
This skit in particular has the feel of a Tim Heidecker bit. I'll bet Andy Kaufman was an inspiration to him
Awesome! I've never seen this one before!
classic Andy Kaufman, people know there won't be any joke, he is the joke. We are supposed to say "what was that? its not funny, i don't get it." That's what he wants to happen and that's his comedy. Take it or leave it.
+Rocky Martin not at all. you're supposed to say "it's fucking amazing how a man can tell shitty jokes then cry then suddenly burst into a tribal song". because it's fucking amazing.
+Rocky Martin He just wants to make people feel awkward. The whole joke is that he plays with the audience. And plays on their expectations and gives them something else than that. That is why is a genius in comedy. Element of surprise and audience interaction.
Agreed. People like to claim that "intentionally bombing" is cheap and easy, but in reality, it's incredibly ballsy and difficult.
One of my favorites of his techniques is when he's funny, but he's making the audience feel guilty for laughing, which makes them laugh more, and then he doubles down on the guilt trip. It's freaking beautiful.
There was some video about Phil Fish that I can't find anymore. At the end, they zoom into his twitter icon which is Andy Kaufman and this clip plays. It was genius.
眩暈夢 It was SuperBunnyHop's video about Phil Fish and Fez
Oh my god, thank you.
眩暈夢 No problem my dude
It's funny. I just came here because of that SuperBunnyHop video.
that man have no shame at all and that is his biggest gift.
A Legend.
Jim Carrey nailed this part when he portrayed Andy in Man on the moon. Shockingly similar actually.
Nitro192 didn’t understand why they had to recreate allot of those scenes. Why couldn’t they just use the original footage ?
@@jessicamcbrearty5862 Have you ever played a video game where the cutscenes were pre-rendered? It would have been like that, the difference between Carrey and Kaufman would have been too stark to keep viewers immersed in the film.
Jim Carey is a piece of satanic dogshit
Andy was/is/will be the best always!
I shouldn't be watching this at work, it's getting harder and harder to hide my laughter.
I came here to try and understand andy Kauffman, and I just couldn’t understand why his jokes weren’t funny, and I was beginning to think that it’s all going over my head, until the ending when he wraps it all together. I lost it laughing.
I was relieved he didn't open with the usual Foreign-Man-Into-Elvis routine. It was a good bit, he did a few variations on it, but he did it enough times.
What a comical genius! One of the funniest men ever. Crying, into a well-rehearsed bongo routine. Awesome!! It was great seeing him back then. Mighty Mouse, Foreign Man, I Trusted You .... Brilliance.
"what I don't understand is why your going 'boo' at some of the jokes, then when I don't want you to laugh your laughinh" That's EXACTLY what he was trying to do.
Wow he is pure genius!
An artist this brilliant comes along only very rarely.
