  • Welcome back to the Defense Digest channel! In this video, we delve into the iconic B-52 bomber and the mystery behind the plumes of black smoke it produces during takeoff. Despite being in service for over 60 years, the B-52 still uses outdated Pratt & Whitney YJ57-P-3 turbojet engines, which are known for their inefficiency at low speeds and altitudes, resulting in excessive fuel consumption and smoke production.
In this video, we explore the reasons behind the B-52's smoke production, including the type of fuel it uses, JP-8, which is known to produce more smoke compared to other jet fuels. We also discuss the age of the engines and the lack of upgrades to modern turbofan engines, which are more efficient and emit less smoke.
Recently, Rolls-Royce has begun testing F130 turbofan engines for the B-52 as part of the modernization program, sparking a debate on whether the B-52 should be upgraded with newer engines or keep its old ones. They also use water injection which also causes the smoke from the engines

The Air Force should have got those engines on the B52 changed long ago.

The reason why the smoke is black is because the fuel is hydrocarbons. Everything from straight run gasoline to engine oil are hydrocarbons with a few other traces of other things. The heat of combustion breaks the hydrogen away from the carbon. Since the hydrogen has a lower ignition temperature, it burns first so the unburnt fuel has a very high carbon content, thus black.

Yes. I think upgrading the B-52 fleet with the new, improved engines would be a worthwhile endeavor, as well as maintaining and improving the readiness of nuclear warheads, in order to (hopefully) deter/prevent, additional, Russian aggression and expansion into western Europe. I'd also like to see these birds retrofitted with better, air-to-air defenses, such as composite/compound, solid-state laser cannons or other forms lightweight, electronic weaponry (directed energy weapons).

In short it’s unburnt fuel but it’s to be a thing of the past as a deal with rolls Royce has been made for replacement engines

Ofcourse the military should do the upgraded engines for the B-52 Planes, they are highly used and should lead with an example since the people now have to think about the environmental impacts we make, why shouldn't the military do the same thing??

The Info on the engines is Inaccurate , The Engines are TF 33 P&W Engines developed from the J 57, After Development, They are not J57's, They Are a Different Engine, the TF 33 JTA3, The J57 was Fuel Hog, The Further Development was Critically Important to Increase Range of The B52, Details are Important, And Accurate Information is Important for Your Credibility ....

Well we have almost nuked ourselves Iceland and two other places because of those motors failing and then the plants dropping out of the sky so yeah we might want new motors just so that doesn't happen again 😂

The US Air Force is having a hard time finding parts for the old Pratt and Whitney engines and their hard on fuel. They need cost amazements so to put new rules roist. Turbo fan engines on it would make the B52. Have more powerful engines more fuel efficient engines that can be serviced. Over the next twenty seven Twenty years or more

I don’t see the point of updating the engines. They’ve been reliable and one of the most important aircraft in the US Air Force for over 60 years and you look at the big scheme of things in war there are far worse things flying around in the air
