Get that bag homie 💰
no gives a fuk
What a wonderfully depressing video this is, not the least by it's sponsor! It was a delightful and highly enjoyable peek into economics 101.
😮😅
the fact that they bought mineral rights for their own island is quite sickening
but it's the west's practices.. so it's all alright
The ABSOLUTE worst thing that could ever happen is a Europen ship discovering you
This comment.
Someone (with advanced technology) was going to come across that island. And with the amount of mineral resources they had, their fate was sealed
@@everythingisfine9988 history shows that Europeans are particularly bad at this.
Discovering??? what! Or find
@@Sahanawaj_ hahahah stumble across inhabited land but “discover” on their maps
I will let the UK gov know about the camp probably cheaper than Rwanda.
Is there any way that fine rocks & soil could be imported to the island to fill up the gaps in the island left by mining? Any way at all to reconstruct a healthy island environment? Yes I'm asking about terraforming the island.
thats probably a bad idea considering it will be uninhabitable by 2100 as the UN estimates it to be underwater
Yes. But that costs money. Money they don’t have or the people that have don’t want to give away and nobody can force them to.
way too much money for nearly no benefit.
@@kolinmartz the countries whose governments imprisoned and enslaved the people of that Island owe the survivors decendents reparations... those reparations could be used to rebuild the damaged areas of the island.
@@catherineleslie-faye4302no one should repatriate another nation forever. You're just making the generation that had nothing to do with their enslavement pay forever and make their supposed victims lazy and not accept accountability of their actions.
Guns don’t kill people, but they sure make it a lot easier!
Delusional gun rights supporters
13:18 you can blame the politicians ever since they became independent.
They should have sold off their phosphates more slowly...
Or invested the proceeds to sustain the island
Everytime I am amazed how well done these posts are....thanks a bunch for being informative and entertaining at the same time...all the time!!!!
I am curious as to what the locals actually think. Not just the poor or those in the top goverment. A rounded, well informed understanding of their culture and different political groups and identities would give a much better understanding of if things are bad and/or good for how many and for which parts of the population.
We in the west usually project what is good and what is bad unto other parts of the world. Now we are usually right, but our perspectives are from our own culture and we therefore speak and suggest solutions, that makes sense in our own culture. But these often fail on a local level because there are, among other things, different stages of culture and history a people have to go through in order for them to act and think in certain adventagous ways of the modern world. This process is multi-generatinal.
Yes while it’s terrible to see Nauru being taken advantage of by other countries, they need to be accountable for their own actions. They became rich and squandered their wealth and they can only blame themselves for that no one else
If only they invested in an index fund
They would be hella wealthy.
Informative and interesting. Thanks
I would look into Singapore for some of its strategies.
Singapore utilized its location on the shipping route between China and Europe to become a trading hub. Nauru isn't by any shipping route
@@jiggy7108 was thinking about financial side.
Nauru was fucked from start. And not because of stuff they went trough. They are extremely small Island, out of way with extremely small population. All things that make most trade and industry just not possible or competitive.
Tourism would be super unlikely, for those reasons, there's plenty of really nice topical places that are more interesting, closer to major population centers or just more developed. Nauru is is after all just very small flat tropical island, there just isn't really anything that would attract tourists to make it actual sources of revenue.
They did get one chance to do something, but they missed it unfortunately.
To me, what their beat chance would have been was to take offer from Australia, to relocate there, they would have got island to themselves with way better prospects. Obviously while that island would be given to them, it would still be part of Australia so they would also become Austalians and essentially become local government so it's understandable why they refused.
But with relocation to Curtis Island and infrastructure paid for by Australia + money they still got from phispate, they could have become quite propesperus.
@@jiggy7108 I was thinking of their financial and investment strategies.
Its sad. Money killed culture. And for what...
Greed that's what
For money duh.
@@kolinmartz thats the point. Should we all kill for money. Like @zona984 sad Greed and than in the and there is nothing left.. only history... and dead land.

I love the grounded reality of this channel!!!

I feel sympathy and empathy for our country, low income earners are suffering to survive, and I appreciate Marc Andreessen. You've helped my family with your advice. imagine investing $30,000 and receiving $95,460 after 28 days of trading.
I'm in a similar situation where should I look to increase income? Do you have any advice? What did you do ? Thank you
Well I engage in nice side hustles like inves'ting, and the good thing is I do it with one one of the best(Marc Andreessen), he's really good!
Did someone just mention Mr Marc!? Damn! You just made my day; what a coincidence.. I've worked with him for over 2years and I can tell how good he is
No doubts, this Marc Andreessen must be an icon; how good is he and how safe is "profit making" with him.?
Its a lesson for the future, petro states are doomed.
Focus on tourism and finance
This is good content as well
don't destroy the marine ecology. Maybe they could have / encourage scientists to come study the people, ecology, geology. Teach advanced studies to college students from Australia, New Zealand, and surrounding islands. Teachers could be researchers. Maybe there could be a mission / programs for students and locals, to educate and find a way for these people to come back from this and survive. Why only have a college to teach basics to the people? I think thats a missed opportunity.
Although your ending statement about how "they screwed up their one shot, once independent" is kinda true, I'd place the blame on the corrupt officials that ran the island and not the natives. Regardless, I am enjoying your channel, lol, I just found it tonight!
Independent with prowestern politician = today Nauru... after they were all forced into it at gun point... 🔫
Amazing video sir
Is there a small island nation that is doing well? I feel like it’s very hard for independent small nations to remain wealthy without exploiting themselves.
Singapore?
Now do one on Norway ...
would say try and rehabilitate the land and turn to tourism but that takes cash which is in short supply so they gotta stick to fast money and figure out more long term sources of money they blew through all the money the money they earned as an independent country on too much frivolous thing a huge blunder
Nauru partied like there was no tomorrow, so not surprising.
The Australian immigration detention was highly effective and any competent government with the same issue should get their own Nauru.
Your videos are top class.
The good people of Nauru were scammed by sophisticated international financiers.
When I moved to Australia from Canada. in 1988 the Nauruan's received free lights to Melbourne twice per year, the got (almost) free houses in Nauru when the married, and (almost) free accommodation is Australia, at locations such as "The Islander's Place" in glitzy Easy Melbourne.
They deserved to get a Sovereign Fund like that of Norway.
Instead the got robbed.
didn't a shit ton of creators already make videos explaining exactly this topic like about a year ago?
So
So everyone should no longer discuss this topic because other UA-camrs talked about it a few years ago?
Didn't some of the people on the island buy luxury sports car to drive on the single ring road around the island?
Reminds me of lorax
I don’t even puff pot.
No fate but what they make...
Speaking of islander exploitation, do Chagos next!
...per capita...oof
American exporting its obesity crisis
They over relied on their natural resource, chose to be unemployed, government employees were paid a lot regardless if they were qualified or not, they did not value what they had
13:18 you can blame their corrupt and inhumane government for wasting all their money or keeping it for themselves. The population could have revolted but they didn’t so it was their own fault although of cause the previous colonizers are to a certain extent accountable.
should've they've instead invested those revenue to stocks and bonds instead of ambitious real estates they would've still enjoying the fryit of their success
they have nice beaches that will stay there forever unlike the other substance that went extinct. they should build hotels, beach bars and open a couple of factories making electricity and cars, or weapons to keep the trade with usa uk and australia so their currency dont get to be a terrible joke. In the worst case as russian mafia started doing some money laudring buisness there they could become a drug free country, it would be ok to export and deport drug substances but it would be illegal to use or sell these drugs on public. And that means that the goverment should have only one drug bank exporting it to the mafias that were having their money into nauru's national bank. With that more and more mafias would like tto spend their money on buying drugs by the legal and only supplier.... NAURU
It’s pronounced Nah-roo
After 5 minutes of listening to this I realized…No oboday cares…next
So it all trickles down to European ships discovering them. We all know its going to be devastating if you are discovered by the Europeans 😅
