Even though Mecir won the Gold Medal at the Seoul '88 Olympics, I always thought that he would win 2 or 3 GS, such was his talent and craftiness 😉 He was one of the few players who could make the game of Tennis, look 'Easy'. He was an interesting player to watch. Thanks for the upload.
He was talented, but to wing GS in 2 weeks only talent is insufficient. Mental and physical perhaps more key....u will have bad days and yet u need to win. Mats was a master in that 🙌 👏
@@mibaer71That's right, he was constantly second serving due to his bad back. It's a great pity. With a good first serve, he could have won some majors.
If I had to vote for the single best year in tennis history, 1985 would be a definite contender. McEnroe still near his best (at least in the first half of the year), Connors on the decline but still a regular in major semis, Leconte and Mecir the newcomers of the early season and then finally the meteoric rise of Becker and Edberg. And all the while, wonderful tennis being played throughout, full of creativity, touch and variety.
Mecir played with his opponents, no wonder why they nicknamed him the Cat. Such an agile mover and attacked just at the right moment. Classic player from the 80s before big power tennis came up.
I believe that back trouble cut his career short. He beat every top player in the 80s. Lendl, Wilander, Connors, McEnroe. He beat them all. Very gifted .

Wilander looked defeated even before he hit the first point. Mecir loved the endless high bouncing topspin into his hitting zone, particularly if they landed mid-court. Wilander probably would had better luck if he sliced and aimed deeper for the corners more and forced Mecir to generate the pace.
Unglaublich wie extrem nahe man als Fan/Autogrammsammler damals noch nach dem Spiel an die Spieler rangekommen ist, heutzutage völlig undenkbar , alles war damals normaler und natürlicher , vermisse die 80er/90er
Both players were only 20 years old here. Wilander had already been French and Australian Open champion, and would go on to win the French Open again in a couple of weeks after this. Despite his performance here, Mecir had a disappointing French Open in 1985 and lost to Martin Jaite in the third round.
While I recall mats won 1985 FO, I was not aware this was 2 weeks before that. That is mats wilander, his best preparation is for GS and that is why he is a legend. Mecir despite all his a abilities somehow could not come close to winning any GS, reached finals but thrashed by lendl on both occasions I think.
@@evenkat6780 Interestingly, Lendl's original coach, Wojciech Fibak, felt that a lot of that generation of eastern european players had been psychologically damaged by Communism and found it hard to win on the big occasions. He got Lendl out to America as quickly as he could because he felt it would help him improve his mentality. Fibak may have been right - Lendl was notorious as a choker in his early days, and Navratilova, Mandlikova and Novotna were all famous for their mental ups and down. I think probably Mecir can also be put in that category.
It looks as if Mecir is using a wooden racquet, whereas Wilander already uses aluminium probably. Disregarding the stroke motions of these days, the performance level with those racquets is impressive. Just watch Nikola Aracic from intuitive tennis on youtube playing with a wooden racquet. Material can have a huge impact.

No one has ever gotten more of their game than Wilander. Not a great serve. No big groundstroke weapons. Very solid in all aspects but not flashy in any area. Was a very good mover.
Mecir is technically way more better than Wilander even Wilander is technically way more better than the most of the players in ATP tour in 80's. I know Wilander can move better in clay than Mecir, but his technique make Wilander's footwork meaningless.

Hi,
I was thinking generally across his career, not just a 2 week post Olympic, 'Moment'.
Wilander said that he reminds of Medvedev in his style
I think his service was not big enough, even weaker than Mats´ service.

I fully agree! Such a combo of style and generations...a crossroad.
Don’t forget Lendl
excellent graphite rackets in the early and mid 80s also and the fashion! FILA / TACCHINI
Wilander won RG beating Lendl in the final that year. But he hated playing Mecir. I guess most players must have been confused.

He did improve his serve towards the latter part of the decade. when he won 3 of the big 4 in 1988 his serve had become much more of a weapon by then
He was an incredible tactician with a superior tennis brain to the majority of top players, that's one thing you didn't take into account.
The area he was "flashy" in was the brain.
