Sub 10 second 100m "definitely in my lifetime" he says with a smug grin. One of the most iconic moments in the Olympics, Hines raises a black gloved fist after winning gold in Mexico 1968. You'd think the sports reporter might have known that.

Fun fact: the Americans realised they had only one pair of black gloves. The Aussie bronze medal winner suggested they wear one each.

I'm Indian and I guessed 1414 on the Guru Nanak question. Glad to learn I wasn't terribly off.

Some of these guesses are hysterically awful

Some pretty obscure & not particularly interesting trivia, imo. Dates of births/deaths are the sort of dry data that turn people off history.
What's more interesting & likely to enrich your understanding of the world just a bit ; that Sikhs traditionally wear red turbans to weddings, for one example of ceremonial color-coding, but everyday turbans can be any color... Or the death date of the religion's founder ?
What tells you more about kings & how seldom they walk the walk ; the year Richard III died or the fact that he's the only English monarch to die in battle since Harold got done in by The Normans back in 1066 ?
Osman certainly looks like a Potterhead, so I'm surprised he didn't go for the Broken Wand Ceremony being performed for the first time at Houdini's funeral. Not sure I feel enriched knowing magical nerds predate Harry & co's fans, but still more interesting than his birth year.
Is it more interesting to know WHEN Cambridge was founded or why ? Scholars fled Oxford fled because the locals & students kept fighting (literal rioting in the streets) , largely over the students' obnoxious drunken behavior & general snottiness.
I'm sure there would be more juicy tidbits I could share, but I got bored after the Cambridge question.

Not the round for you then?
This is easily my favourite round - mainly because it's the one that has objective facts that can be remembered.

No, because it's not about knowing the exact date, but estimating it by knowing some historical context. I don't know when Cambridge was founded, but I know that old universities were founded in the middle ages, I could guess the decades of the death of Richard III and the birth of Henry VIII because I know roughly the sequence of events, and I learned that the first St. Paul's Cathedral in London was build during the Gregorian Mission. I could have guessed that, but didn't.

Perhaps you think understanding history is less important, never mind interesting, than I do. I'll take QI's lateral thinking any day. Better yet, I'll watch some of James Burke's brilliant Connections series.

@Dogasaurus understanding history is essential - part of that is knowing the sequence and rough distances between events as well as major markers that you can use as anchor points along the way.

@@quintuscrinis Never said dates or sequences of events were irrelevant, just of limited use or interest without context.
It reminds me of how languages were taught to me in school. Too much rote memorization of vocabulary, etc, & not enough situational practice to get the stuff to really stick.
40+ years since I successfully passed O level German & I can still quote the first 20 lines or so of Die Lorelei, but I couldn't hold a rudimentary conversation. 30+ years since I backpacked through Brazil for a few months, never had a Portuguese lesson, but can still chat with the odd Brazilian tourist I encounter & get compliments on my accent and slang.
