I am 14 years old and I cant afford to buy any of this great survival survival gear but I still like to watch your videos and get an idea of what I could put into my pack when I get older so thumbs up on this video.
Go visit some yard sale mate
It's amazing how much one can pack into a ammo can. Great job and it gave me some ideas for my Jeep that I use for exploring the backcountry.
Thanks!
I've got my SHTF kit down to a 7lbs waist pack for Spring/Summer and a 15 lbs backpack for All Weather. I know I can survive with the items in my kit. My only concern is the fact that, unlike 95% of all preppers, I am a female and I have to think very creatively at least once a month if I need to bug out in the wild. Just something to think about guys if you have any females you love and care about.
My wife and daughters laugh at me, but I have liners, pads and tampons in all my first aid and fire kits. They can double as wound dressings or tinder. Ain't enough for the apocalypse, but enough to get at least one lady through 2-3 days on the way to a shelter. By the way, Dave Pearson at "reallybigmonkey1" recommends having three washcloths in lieu of carrying toilet paper (yeah, almost as gross as changing junior's diaper). I know it's kind of Middle Ages, but better a folded washcloth in your shorts than the alternative! And, you can wash 'em, dry 'em and re-use them.
Not sure if it has been said I didn't read all 100+ post but one thing that was not mentioned was the BOX itself, it can be counted as a container for water if needed. Very well done video, keep up the good work.
I'd say a pack of baby wipes from the dollar store, and maybe a bandana or two. Other than that pretty awesome, probably going to build something very similar for my trunk. edit: Oh and a cheap pair of leather work gloves. If you're building or cutting anything/working with wood or tools, it's a must to protect your hands.
Couple of 4 mil contractor bags, couple of cravats(bandage, field hand towel, filter, improvised tourniquet?) Maybe a set of fingernail clippers? Ya you can use a knife but for the size, why not have the right tool? Sore hands in the field long term is demoralizing. A pair of lightweight gloves also would be a good addition.
Definitely some insect repellent, bugs(horseflies and skeeters) will ruin your life and they're everywhere. Stopped on the side of the highway once in early evening to change a flat tire and was eaten alive by mosquitoes from the road ditch in just a few minutes. Couple of instant coffee packets, couple of teabags, couple of coffee filters for pre filtering water? couple of sugar packets? Jurst a few suggestions of some small light weight additions to your kit. Great video as always, like them all so far.
insects (flies, mosquitoes, etc) are usually pushed away by smoke so just keep a fire running
High my name is Jason. I just found your channel and I was a survival instructor for a bunch of years. I was the owner of Alabama Bushcraft and was on the Doomsday Preppers show on The National Geographic Channel. You said to give you feed back or questions and I have a couple questions that I would like to ask for just fun or maybe we can both learn from each other because like our parents always said there ain't no such thing as a dumb question. That how great things were invented because a few people got together and started asking questions so thanks in advance.
1. What direction were you going with the kit? Short term, long term, survive in place or self rescue.
2. Did you research the most likely scenario's of survival you would be in while in a vehicle and setup the kit accordingly to the top 2 or 3 situations that you would most likely be in in your area?
Again Thanks and God Bless!
It's a awesome Little compact survival kit I'd probably throw in a wrist rocket slingshot for hunting not the best but it's something and small enough to fit if you try to organize it in a little
Put the first aid kit on top of the other gear in your ammo can so if u need it, that way ur not digging through the entire kit with a possibly serious injury to get to treatment
if serious injury plan on death
Good ideas for a larger kit. Would add 1) mirror or highly reflective surface; 2) magnifying glass; 3) powdered isotonic drinks; 4) vacuum - pack set of clothing, sock, non- lubricated condoms and such.
thanks for the great suggestions.
Condoms hahaha are you james bond or what
Loved the video, made up a "10-C-plus" ammo can to stash under the backseat of my pick-em-up truck. I added an Esbit folding stove (cubes and a Bic folded inside it), nested a cup over the CRES bottle, threw in a bandana (thousands of uses!), and a vial of pepper spray because it fit, and managed to get a brick of SOS rations in there. I always have a couple of fresh bottles of water in the truck anyway, so I can hit the trail with a belly full of clean water. It's not a feather, but it's lighter than most tool boxes!
I would add a BIC lighter; cheap, easy, and reliable. I would also add a Fresnel lens. Those take up hardly any room and can be used for magnification and fire starting. Solar fire starters are a must. No need to use up your other fire starters if the sun is out.
I like it. I like the concept. It keeps everything in an easily stackable container. Your question of what could be added to it. I did notice that you had some extra room. I'd probably add a couple of bottles of water. In a survival situation you may not have easy access to water right off the bat. Having a couple of bottles gives you that hydration right at the beginning of your trials and tribulations. Plus, it also gives you a couple of containers that you can add purified water from the mini sawyer when you do find a source of water.
I like the thinking.
I like the concept too, i think ammo boxes last much longer than any bag, besides it can be used as a chair or even a weapon; i have kept my EDC in a box too for years but i couldn't get an ammo box so i painted a vintage metal tools box and it works the same.
Looks great. This video has given me some ideas and I love the fish mouth spreader! Since you have the space I would add a mirror, a whistle, a few bandanas, gloves, socks, a boonie hat, carabiners (including a NITE IZE S Biner Ahhl), insect repellent, an emberlit stove with a few solid fuel cubes, a light weight camping cup, a few emergency candles, a good mdd/high lum flashlight and a small bushcraft/survival guide. It sounds like a lot but most of this stuff is pretty to stow and is pretty light.
You have a great set up there. There are three things I see that are lacking. First is your signal kit. You already know what goes into a signal kit so I won't beat a dead horse. Second item missing is a pair of good Sierra Cups. You have a great bottle which you can boil up something to eat or drink but what do you pour the contents into? Last item is just a personal thing I came up with for classes I was teaching 40 years ago. A very small individual cup holding stove. It folds up and takes almost no room and when open the Sierra cup sits on top of it. It's uses solid fuel pellets that burn cleanly. It's great for brewing just one cup of coffee allowing you to stop and think things over and create a plan of action. Just a thought. As you said, everyone has different ideas.
That ammo box is a cool modular kit that can be moved from vehicle to vehicle. Fox Tactical makes a fold up lightweight backpack that can definitely be stuffed in there on top of what you already have. That way if the box is all you have and you have to leave the vehicle for some reason, you have a more comfortable carry method at your disposal.
Very cool ideas, man ! A few thoughts of improvement :
1. Ammo can imho is not good to carry long term. I'd use it more in a "cache" spirit than as a survival kit I'd carry with me in the field.
2. No water ? What if there is no water source around ? I'd fill the aluminium bottle with water instead of the extra stuff, since you have room left. And add some water purification tablet too. (takes virtually no room and weight).
3. I'd toss a few Bic lighter (easier than ferrorod if you have the luxury), a whistle and mirror for signaling.
I would also pack some eating utensils. Put some of the smaller items inside lidded bowls so you have food serving containers. Great kit.
Finally!!! Someone else who sees the value of nylon twine. Though mine is not tarred. I believe a person can store about 5X the amount of nylon masons twine in the same area as 550 paracord. Paracord is a necessity, but rarely is it's strength needed. Masons twine will do almost everything paracord will minus load lifting. Masons twine makes great cordage for shelters and is surprisingly strong.
+Joel seperate the strands duh i mean cmon paracord is more versatile and offers more reliability
John Harrington why would I want to go through the trouble of breaking down my paracord? If I did that then I just ruined that paracord. A person should carry both.
Great video! That kit is really good man. You have a really creative mind. I find your videos very refreshing cuz you don't feel the need to edit and that's really encouraging to other UA-camrs like myself. Keep up the good work!
Thanks!
along with the alcohol prep for fire starting, isopropyl at 70% is volatile at low temperatures and a couple dozen alcohol preps can go a long way in preserving your ability to start a fire. the feral rod and mag kit works well, but in a hurry the alcohol prep will light now to create heat if things get critical.
I like the idea of keeping various types of meds in a daily reminder box.Never thought of that.
i have to say the one thing i love about your channel is that its like 1/2 wilderness and 1/2 urban. most people only focus on one or the other. and if something major happens like a walking dead thing. you may start in a urban are but then may end if in the woods. you never know.
Dave Canterbury could start a colony with that kit. Great video. What's missing? I don't think anything was but you can always add more for someone's expertise. Like snare wires and traps, collapsible fishing poll, or even a sling shot.
wow that handle for boiling water in ur bottle is magnificent
Ammo cans can be surprisingly practical, and easy to store long term.
What I like about how you put all that in the ammo can is if ...say for instance you have a single cab truck you can throw that behind the seat it will fit and it will be snug as a bug in a rug and out of the way..great vid.. you just got a new subscriber
Veg and fruit seeds :) 25 cents a pack you can't beat that. Plus you need vitamin c in your diet and fiber. Once you plant you can water with river water, you don't need to filter it.
on the go scavange... planting takes too much time looks like theres pine where he lives Leatherman tool makes them easy to pick off. Seeds good for long stays tho...
I love how you call something by a big name in an almost bored tone and then go "Or whatever the hell you wanna call it." Don't lose that, that just adds to your vids and if I can laugh, I can learn. This is what keeps me coming back to your videos.
I have something similar in my car but I have a set of jumper cables, car fuses, pliers and a multi-screwdriver.
I have three leatherman tools- One in my survival pack-one in my medical kit-and a leatherman wave on my person. LOVE'EM!
Old video, but I just now saw it, so it’s new to me.
One thing-I use a GI Ammo Can for much the same thing.
However it’s metal, so it’s abrasive/rough on surfaces. I don’t remember where I got them, but I siliconed rubber corners on the bottom 4 corners. They really help. I might have taken them from something I had. I just don’t remember.
I also wrapped Paracord around the handle. It will reasonably easy take 30 feet. It might take more. You do loose the ability to fold the handle flat.
The body wash is one item I had forgotten. I’m getting some body wash ASAP. And NEVER forget a small cloth towel, or large wash cloth!!!
And a very good idea is to paint the inside a light color, so you can find items easier. (I use white and sometimes yellow). I even do that with my cloth EDC bags. Slightly Thin some latex paint down, so it will soak in SLIGHTLY. Then put on 2 coats. My EDC bags and tool bags I turn them inside out, if possible, to do that. It really helps!
I also have an Ammo Box painted bright orange inside and out with “FIRST AID” written on all 6 sides of it. Obviously, it is for first aid. It holds enough for most things.
Dave Canterbury will never die. With a knife and a rock, He will live forever in the wilderness somewhere . . ..
Ammo cans are great for battery storage too.
Great kit the only thing I would add, especially if its going to be a vehicle kit is a candle
honestly, i think that is ballin! especially to use as a car kit. a local store sells new, never used military 5.56 ammo cans, im going to pick one up and do one of these kits, i have enough extra gear that it wouldn't hurt me financially
A rain poncho is something I have in my personal pack. Your not always going to be waterproofed, and you can fold one up pretty damn small.
Definitely a good car kit. Or something to put behind the seat of the pickup truck, or something it can apply to.
Sling shots are nice to have and dont take up lots of room.
plus you can find ammo anywhere even if you use rocks
There are tarps with reflective lining that are are much more durable and reusable. I would take 2 of those over the SOL stuff and they cost about the same. One for shelter one to wrap up in. With fire you would get through the night. I enjoy the channel keep up the good work!
good kit! one thing i would add. kinda to go along with ur body wash would be a pack of "wet ones"(antibacterial). great video thanks prepmind!!
Just wanted to say, very good video on what can be done with you can put in the box. And....Yes, to all the people that say you can put this and that along with all the other stuff, they are all great suggestions. The great thing about these type of systems is that you can customize it to anything you want.
Great video and great suggestions.
I think you did an outstanding job on packing your ammo can. The only two other options I could think of would be a pair of jumper cables and toilet paper.
That is a decent kit in an emergency. Cover's the basics and has capability. Great example. Maybe a couple of sterno cans, a bic lighter, freeze dried soup and a few bottles of water and garbage bags. Couple of those little walkie talkies would be handy too.
great video brother, i have a kit in a 50cal military ammo can that i got at the local Atwood's a few years ago that i keep in my Jeep, its impressive how much gear you can fit in an ammo can
That is a sweet kit! (i also covet that camouflage tarp in the background!!) XD And the Leatherman Wave is one of the most pocketable slabs of versatile badass on the planet!
The only changes i would make would be to pack it differently, most crucial items towards the top, for easier access. And ADD COMPRESS DRESSINGS! Adhesive bandages will help soothe a minor cut, but a trauma dressing will save the life of someone that is exsanguinating.
Also a boonie hat, sunglasses, and some socks would probably fit in there too. Very cool to see someone with such a similarly prepared mindset!
I think the can would be more usable if it was a 50 cal steel can, then it could be used to cook in and boil with if needed.
Like your can as a get out quick kit,
It would also make a great can for single use kits, like one for fire & light, one for first-aid, one for shelter, one for cutting, one for trapping-fishing-hunting, one for cordage, one for food, plus others that would be more for longer term.
I did not see anything on cooking you food?
This is the video that started IT ALL for me.... Prepping wise that is...
Thanks again Chris T.
Awesome video!! The only thing I would add is a couple of BIC lighters. All those fire starters are great to have but an instant flame is always a plus. And maybe a few Mylar blankets as well. They're small and could make good signaling devices if nothing else.
Awesome video. You could consider including one or two Mechanical "Yoyo" Fishing reels with the flat triggers. They are super inexpensive, lightweight, and compact. They will catch fish and even snare small animals while you are doing other things, like gathering firewood or building a shelter. Given their minimal price, size, and weight and having significantly huge benefits I think these would be a great addition to your Cabelas container.
I was going to suggest a spare knife in the water bottle and low and behold you already thought of it. Great video on a well thought out kit. Great job thanks.
Great video. Some really great items and covers all the basics. I would consider thinking of the order in which they are packed though. I noticed the first aid kit was near the bottom. In an emergency situation the last thing i want to be doing is emptying most items it order to get to what i need in the winter with freezing hands. Still awesome kit though
-5 Star for the FISH MOUTH SPREADER.
-I'd Add:
1) Signal Mirror
2) Trauma Kit
3) Fishing Kit
Great Video
I know! the mouth spread was a GREAT idea! I would have never even thought of that!
There is a fishing kit dumb ass ,he made it himself
Fmx Sosa, there’s no need for that kind of attitude! We’re all here to help each other survive man. After all, if he missed the fishing gear bit because he wasn’t paying attention, it’s his loss.
good idea, but the USGI steel ammo cans would be much better as far as durability and being more waterproof. though they are heavier, they arent anywhere near as flimsy
I've been watching allot of your videos lately and I got to say thati really appreciate all your effort into helping others with better understanding. After a few of your videos, I pretty much got a full list of materials, type of tools, and anything else I might need for my basic survival bag and my edc bag... Thanks...
Thank you for watching them.
I enjoyed the video, I've been looking for different ways to store gear. I have a small bag with me in my car at all times but it would be nice to pull some stuff out of a box like this and go on my way
I Love it. One thought on the calories, I would (in mine) swap out the power bars for lifeboat bars, and jam in a few "coffee cart" packs of honey and maybe instant coffee, sugar, cpl tea bags. That could all go in a medicine bottle.
y'all are hating on this guys survival box but what y'all don't know is the smallest things can save your life I have a great big survival bag and I have my little 20 piece bag I take with me every were you never know when that time will come when you will really need it
Now without google+..
Add proper scissors. Those are very handy for cleaning up fish even with frosty hands, cut canvas, keep haircut (and beard) in order. Those tiny scissors in leatherman are handy for some tasks but not for everything.
...:)....I keep an extra pair of dry socks in my bags .....VERY IMPORTANT ....preferably wool .but dry feet is very important and often overlooked......good stuff bro
I like the fact you are taking advantage of battery tech and back up. You might want to investigate a small solar flex panel to slide inside the box for recharge of your battery units?
Good kit, I would suggest MSR water purification tablets designed for 64 oz per tablet. Switch out your Nalgene metal canteen with the 64 oz Kleen Kanteen water bottle. Maybe a Goal Zero solar cell and battery pack. Goal Zero 10 I believe that is what it is called, Whistle, don't remember if you had a signal mirror, Emergency flare - great for assisting a fire real quick it if raining or wet outside. Spare batteries for flashlights etc. And a bottle of pedialyte drink. Just some ideas for you.
Now the question is, do you pack to be seen, or do you pack to be hidden
Hi Chris. Great video. I have a box like that too that I have been throwing things in as I upgrade my BOB. Maybe add a bandanna.
just finally got around to making mine today. still need a few more things and I'll be all set.
I never thought of an ammo box that's a great idea for me to make a survival kit for my truck which is a single cab Ford ranger so I can't really fit a bag behind the seats
Nice kit considering the space. A lot of functionality there. perfect for the car.
Well that definitely beats the starting gear on Naked and Afraid. Thank you for posting.
Yes we have seen it all befor but not in a kit like this , this shows us different ways to make a kit that can help us and or others great job keep up with the good work
Nice.. I like that can.
I was thinking vehicle kit. Since it's rather compact. I'd add some toilet paper and maybe a map.
Thanks for the video
Good idea and good kit. Only suggestion, which you already mentioned, is more calories and I'd probably toss in some kindling for the winter season. Thanks.
Also, since mine will be in the bed of my truck where tools and lumber, etc. will be crashing into it, I'll be using a heavy, metal military ammo can for my kit. Should hold up to any abuse, car accident, etc. They're the perfect size for a seat and virtually bear proof.
Love it, great idea. I might replace my compact First-aid/Survival kit in my car with something like this, that I can spare some extra room for useful extras. Thankx Man.
If you want oil for sharpening you can use veggie oil or olive oil and it won't spoil your food.
I would put a trauma kit in there. I would also put a flare gun in that box. Great idea and nice effort on that. I have an extra ammo box just like that, It was on sale at Academy. I way just do this.
you didn't think of cover by the ground: 70 percent of your heat is lost by contact whit the ground, then paradoxally a sleeping pad is better than a sleeping bag (said from experience). my pad is smaller than your escape bivy, and it does a perfect job trust me
You shld put one of those cheap thin draw string book bags in there incase u gotta move u mite not wanna carry that big box & ur missing 100% cotton bandana lol but yeah other than that. I wish my kit contained those items.lol I still got alot of saving & buying to do. Thank you for the vid pal
It all looks great. But you forgot to put ammo in your ammo box...
I was thinking that putting a solar panel on the side of the ammo can would be great to charge your batteries but in your more recent videos you showed us solar/battery banks. Time to do an update video.
I like the steel ammo cases. The plastic ones don't hold up in extreme weather.
Good idea. I like the water purification kit.
Having that muchh space available I would include a guide or book on flora and fauna of your country to know what can be eaten where you are and where to find it.
I think a lot of you are missing the point. He said he had a bigger pack that he uses. But this is a good back up with out breaking the bank. You need to get the hell out and cant get to you main pack and have this somewhere else. Atleast you have something to survive with.
Awesome kit u have put together there. I like its in a sealed box at it would "flood" proof it too. I am surprised I didnt see at least one bic lighter in there. U did have multiple other fire starting methods though so no big deal. That to me is a perfect car kit. Something u can chuck in there and forget until needed. The only other comment I want to make is more of a question and that is to ask what was the thing hanging around ur neck that kept swinging into tge shot in front of ur jacket. I couldn't quite make out what it was. Keep tge great videos coming they are much appreciated.
Electric cig!
Like the box for the car... would add some aluminum foil, takes up no room and can come in handy..Enjoy your videos... keep em coming...Bill V
Guys that make these videos always have one thing in common. Guaranteed a tool in every vid.
And what is so wrong about being prepared for a serious emergency?
Good Video well thought out...
I am really surprised that as a veteran you did not take and spread out the tarp and do a bag-lay that way everyone could see the items you have in it and spread out.
also my dad in our camping boxes and kits always had a inventory sheet...
we also had a basic inventory check sheet inside one of the camping trailer cupboards. (that way we could check off everything before bugging out on a trip)
I did like that you packed inside each container . I would put some in some freezer zip-locks..
it was nice to see you put a scull cap in it .. a couple of bandanas and some paper towel work well for doing a head wound
( I have tight stairwell to my basement and if I an not watching I can opener my head - I am usually working on a project and have dirty or greasy hands - so I just fold a paper towel of the workbench and put it under my hat to stop the bleeding- then when done with project- I can clean up and treat it after it clots)
also maxi-pad and tampax make good bandages for gunshot or puncture wounds too...

Great Vid, Sir. As you stated, everyone has their own setup that works for them. You did have some room. A couple of unsolicited suggestions: A few zip lock bags wouldn't hurt. Perhaps some alcohol and peroxide in small bottles for your first aid kit, and a tube of crazy glue to close up a serious gash until you can get to an urgent care center, and some sugar and pepper packets, as they can assist in blood clotting. Even a small Stanley pry bar and a wallet sized Sharpening stone for your blades. I did not recall if I saw a multi tool in your box. A Stylus Pro pen light or head lamp. Just some random ideas. :) Thank you! Kudos!
Nice kit .
add another ammo can and put a hunting, fishing, & trapping kits in it.
Two big rat traps, three yoyo reels, your fish kit, add your cutting tool kit with it and put more and better food in the other.
I got a couple of books on wild plants in my kit.
To me it is no need to add books on insects and spiders because I will not eat them.
Snakes in my area can be eaten, no need for a book for that.
Your vids are great but all kits can be added to or taken away.
There were a number of things I didn't think of before or had forgotten about.
i would add 3 to 4 waist length of cordage. Things like key rings/carabiners and clips can be added for added functionality. Have ready made cordage for cover( handles or a belt for tarp or S.blanket), water (hold the bottle) and ammo box/dry bag (sling). One larger size S.mirror. Adding a smaller expandable bag like a draw tie bag( dry bag would work) as a way to hold very important gear like the knife /straw/ fire kit while in "camp mode" to avoid "losing" or "dropping stuff".
Cool idea. I'm thinking a couple Bic lighters or zippo. If it's an emergency situation. I'm stranded. I'd rather work my way up on the fire making difficulty chart. If your lighter works ,use it. Also a flashlight or headlamp. If you're stranded in the desert. You'll be doing most traveling at night. Trying to beat the heat. Some rechargeable batteries would fit in that kit to.
to me his box was built to last a long time, imo you need to improve its utilities on calorie gathering, fishing/hunting/trapping to keep it even with the boxes protection utility from elements, other than that its a great perspective on survival
you should add two or three rat traps and some wire for snares and I think you have a great kit. I like that, think I may add that too my car.
Another good video, thinking outside the box is why I keep watching your videos. I would add some toilet paper and made a small stove or grill. I have an extra ammo box and will try to make a car kit.
Great video dude. Very easy design with a bunch of space. You need some items though
Flares
Flash light
Bullets if you have a firearm
Socks.
I think you could fit all of these. Flares can be small and so can a flashlight. Still you did a good job.
If possible, you need both hands free, but if you can tie this, or carry this without the hands, then it's viable.
Ok i love your stuff your knife brake downs have helped me with my resend buys. I just bought the bk 7 and love it that knife sits in my bug out bag thanks for the tips Chris
No one has hated the BK7 yet!
great idea buddy... I used the an ammo can for my truck as a survival kit... on top of my bag of course... you gave me some great ideas.. Thanks !!! keep these great videos coming... much appreciated from people like me. JP
Great video! A lot of great ideas. What are the pill containers you use and where do you find them?
Another Great video, hope we all never have to use any survival kits / bug out bags. But it's nice to know to be prepared mind like yourself, and much appreciate your videos,. Thanks again.
