  • James O'Brien reacts as Huw Edwards is spared jail time after paying a paedophile up to £1,500 for child abuse images.
Edwards, 63, was given six months suspended for two years, after admitting three charges of "making" indecent photographs after being sent the images by convicted paedophile Alex Williams over WhatsApp.
Edwards will also have to attend 25 sessions of a sex offender programme and will be required to sign the sex offenders' register for seven years. He will also have to pay £3,128 in costs and a victim surcharge.
'The idea that the images are detached from abuse I reject violently, with every fiber of my being', says James, 'it creates the market where these subhumans feed'.
James also asserts that 'there was bno special treatment here', given Huw Edwards status as a former BBC News presenter, saying that instead 'it's a conversation about a facet of our criminal justice system'.
However, to conclude, James wants to know: 'Why don't we send these people to prison?'

97% are never convicted. When they are, avoiding jail is common. When I came forward against my uncle I was released with a warning after 2 hours of interrogation. 2 cousins were shamed into leaving. When another was finally listened to, my uncle got 8 months. I'm in my 60s. I'v never married, never trusted any man, never trusted any cop.
What happened to me was more than 50 yrs ago. My step-father, a cop, crossed that line starting when I was 7. No one believed me. One day when I was 11, I had all I could take. I didn't care if my step-father actually followed thru with what he said if I told. I had all I could take. With the help of my grandmother, who wouldn't let the 'subject' drop. I got out of the house, he lost his job as a cop, and lived out the rest of his life under a bridge as someone that was homeless.
The other cops turned an 11 yr old into the criminal, because I didn't defend the brotherhood of blue first. I had to move 500 miles away, to my grandmothers. Just to escape what those cops did to me daily. Just walking to school. They acted as if I was the biggest criminal to ever walk the planet.
Believe me, the insomnia, low self esteem, extreme anxiety, and for me, lack of trust in men in general, cops especially. That's what we, who survived that crime, have to deal with. And for me, he got off. Living under a bridge for the next 10 thousand life times, will never be enough for what. That man. What was done to me.

Disclaimer: I'm a lawyer before anybody starts to wonder how I know so much about this.
Currently, being in possession of CP images often carries a sentence of 6 months or less imprisonment, depending on the severity. The courts normally won't send a non violent offender to prison if the sentence is that short because it doesn't give the system time to work with them. 6 months will become 3, and it will take weeks to get them into a program.
The most likely, and most common outcome, will be that Edwards will be on the SOR for a minimum of two years, have to attend monthly sessions with a case worker, and be subject to random home inspections of his internet enabled devices for the entire time he is subject to the order. Any breach of his conditions will see him back in court, but not neccessarily in prison.
Further to that, he won't be allowed to make contact with or be near children under the age of 17 unless it's unavoidable in the course of everyday life. That includes family members. He will have to inform the police if he intends to go abroad or spend more than 7 days away from his home address. The police will perform safety checks on his destination, and decide if it's safe for him to be there. If not, he can't go. If his home address is too near anybody considered vulnerable, including neighbours and family members, he will have to leave. Being a convicted SO means that he will automatically be banned from travelling to many countries, including Australia and the USA.
He will have to inform the police if he changes bank cards or accounts, gets a new passport or changes address. He will have to sign the SOR annually, or more frequently, at a designated police station until his supervision order ends. All of this has to be done in person. He cannot do it by mail, phone, or through a representative.
Most people will agree that his sentence appears too lenient, but it is not over just because he didn't get time. As a recognisable public figure, it will be difficult for him to have any quality of life ever again. What he has done has ruined his life, his career, his relationships and friendships. A few months in jail is nothing compared to what he will have to endure on the outside.
