- A 90's Holiday Barbie Dress is apparently the costume I never knew I needed, but I am so absolutely happy with how this turned out!
In this video, I'm finishing and embellishing the ballgown, making a headband, earrings, and holly leaves, styling the wig, and taking you along with me to Emerald City Comicon, so that you can see the entire group of Holiday Barbies. And everyone looked so amazing!

Seeing this video brings me back to 1994. I was working at WDW Costume workroom in 1994 where we were tasked with recreating the dress for Barbie's meet and greet. I can not let you in on all the secrets but the fur on the skirt was a shaped roll that tapered from the front to a huge roll on a train in the back. It was so big and heavy that she could barely walk. It think that yours was great, Your decisions were sound and it turned out beautiful.
Ok, as much fun as it is for people to naturally recognize a costume you're wearing, I LOVE the label on the mask. Since masks aren't a part of the "pure" costume they are the perfect place to act as a name tag!.
You would definitely give the Energiser Bunny a run for it’s money!! Wonderful dress, but Oh, the struggle!
How you get THAT much quality work done in such a short time solving so many problems is BEYOND me 👗 🤯 !
I am duly impressed !
That turned out so good! As a doll maker I struggle in the opposite direction, making the clothing items small, thin and proportioned. It was interesting to see the problems up scaling the clothing. And yes large fur muffs on the shoulders didn't quite work though the look was interesting. From Instagram it looks like you had lots of fun.
One of the people helping out with the photoshoot was cosplaying as Imogen from the new Critical Role campaign! I’m still so amazed that people have already put together full costumes for the new characters, so I’m WOWED at how you put together this full ballgown, scaled up from doll size, and styled a wig and accessories for this Barbie costume in just a couple of weeks! This was such a fun group idea and everyone looks so magical together!
At 43:03, you showed us the shoulder piece and I thought: it's a Christmas Barbie/ Star Trek Tribble cross over! Thanks for the laugh and the excellent vid. I learn so much from you.
The amount of hair and skirt in the barbie group! It's incredible!
Just a lovely gown and your relentless problem solving skills are so great to see! So inspiring! Loved your reaction to the giant shoulder poufs, and the way you just kept working at it to get it right!
Thank you!
Wow, that was epic. You’re a real problem solver! The battle with the zip at the end made me hyperventilate. A triumph
Because YOU have fun, WE have fun! Thanks so much!
I know you usually wear red lipstick, but for some reason in this video that shade is just PERFECT on you!
❤💚❤💚
How could we not smile so much seeing all the Barbies, all so beautiful. Well done!
Congratulations Rebecca you looked gorgeous. All the other Barbies looked great too. Glad you had a wonderful time.
The struggle with zips is real! Great costume, I love this so much ❤
This whole video with all your difficulties is hilarious you have done a great job recreating Barbie and I think you might have to sleep in that outfit tonight
as someone personally with a big head, i’d highly recommend padding out your wig head to your measurements before styling! it helps leagues with getting it to look right when you finally wear it.
You looked beautiful. Congratulations on a job well done. All were lovely.
I have been collecting Holiday Barbies for 25 years. This was so much fun! Your costume is gorgeous. You did a great job. The other Barbies looked wonderful too
I love everything about this costume from the concept to execution. I always think of Barbies at Christmas because my parents would take me to look around the Seattle FAO Schwartz (I only ever got one toy from there but it was always amazing to go there) and we would always have to go to the Barbie section. I don't know if you ever went, but they entrance had pillars filled with clear liquid and Barbie shoes, and this project totally brought me back to 1995 and the joy of Barbies at Christmas. Also, I don't know how far away you are from the Tacoma Joann's, but I've had pretty good luck with them having stuff in stock.
I remember those Barbie shoe pillars from the San Francisco FAO Schwartz. I didn't even realize there used to be one in Seattle, too. And thank you! ♥️
Get a light gold liquid eyeliner or liquid shadow and use a spoolie (mascara wand) to brush through your eyebrows and lighten them. Have fun!
That looks so fun. I wish I could have joined you and repped 1989 Happy Holidays Barbie in her white dress. That's the only holiday Barbie I still have. I used to have several of the 90s ones, but I got rid of them a few years back.
I got married in 1993 on New Year's Eve at the Seattle aquarium and wanted a fur trimmed dress. Well that was the age of you can't get fur because we're not getting fur and there was no decent faux fur yet. So we actually went with feather boas and the small skinny ones if you run three or four of them together give you large poofy white fur like trim. I wish I could post you a picture of how it came out I had fur both up on the decotage and on my skirt ham anyway it was a great dress and best party I ever threw
Thanks for the giggles, who hasn't either gotten stuck in a costume or inhaled their hair trying to get into it :D I can barely make an invisible zipper work in front of me where I can see it and use both hands!
The whole thing looks great! And the gold mask was a nice touch! Maybe it needed some fur trimming too!!
Honestly, with the dress, the hair looks soo pretty! It turned out amazing! Maybe I should style a wig like that and have instant holiday hair.
Everything turned out so beautifully! The group photos were really amazing. Thanks for taking us along
That turned out great! I loved ALL the Barbies! YAY!!
Rebecca this was honestly incredible! You make such a perfect Barbie I'm in awe 🤩
I love the detail of the whole process, not just the dressmaking! Also, how adorable is her enthusiasm 💜
Girl that hair color and that make up looks fantastic on you you need to wear that more often great job totally great job you are cute
Oh my gosh, I'm only halfway through and I looooove this dress, you look sooo adorable!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I've been so excited to see the making of the Barbie gown. It's excellent! I was eagerly awaiting the group shots; a BUNCH of Holiday Barbie cosplayers!
By the way, standing ovation for the zipper performance!!! Brava! Brava!
This was such a fun thing that you did and love all the beautiful gowns everyone made! The masks with barbie id were such a great touch!
such an amazing dress! and mad props to getting it done before the convention!
So im pressive and great to see the massed ranks of Holiday Barbie. Yay!!!!!
This turned out so well!! And the coordinating handbag and mask were fantastic too!
My cousins have been going to ECCC for years and rave about it. I'm so glad you had a great time! Will you share your Cinderella and Elsa at the con too?
Also-- thanks for sharing the zipper struggle, the pretzels we have to contort into are annoying and hilarious at the same time LOL
Thank you! I'll be doing a video about the whole con weekend -- I hope to have that out on Saturday!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Yay! I love watching you. You have so much energy and even when things don't go as planned, you find a plan B (the fur travel pillow cracked me up) and keep going. I also just watched your cottage core apron video and am modifying it to make a shorter "work" apron to stash all my little bits and bobs that get lost on my sewing table as I move fabric around.
@@KenZchameleon I saw her cottage core apron but I never thought about doing a sewing apron. I only thought about cooking. A “sewing” work apron is brilliant. I think I need one now.
Your 1994 Holiday Barbie outfit is wonderful! All the Holiday Barbie dresses shown here at the Cosplay event were AMAZING and so very lovely. Everyone who participated and was shown here looked beautiful.
Fantastic! I just saw an original ornament of the 1994 barbie at a thrift shop today and wondered how you were getting on with the dress. This was a really neat project to watch!
This costume was really fun to watch you make. I loved hearing your though process in translating the dress to human proportions :D
Props to you for working with lame! It looks great!
You look adorable, just like Barbie. Hope you had fun.
Absolutely enjoyed seeing you having so much fun with all the other Barbie's. They all looked amazing. :}
Fanciful mousse is a reasonable way to temp dye hair, but It can rub off on clothing and/or rinse off and bleed down onto your face in the rain. They also make rinses which could be easier to use on false hair. I think the color you would have actually wanted to use was discontinued. I think it was called honey. I do like how you can use the mousse and/or rinse to temp dye roots or blend in lightened hair to better disguise a root line in a pinch between trips to the salon. If you need to curl synthetic hair (like yaki) you can first roll it into the exact shape you want using any object that is the right size for the curl you want, heat some water to nearly boiling and just dip the rolled hair in. Once dried and the "curlers" are removed, the hair should retain the new curled shape. If the water is too hot, the hair can melt, so this takes a bit of experimentation. This was a fun project! Thanks for sharing
It’s just so gloriously glamorous!
Hooray! You did an amazing job, and seeing everyone together was spectacular!
P.S. I think the color of the wig looked nice on you. Not washed out at all.
I love it! Now I want a Vintage Christmas Barbie dress! 😍💕
You are so sparkly. Even the masks were sparkly. Very festive and fun.
The 1994 Barbie of your inspiration looks like she'd be right at home atop a Christmas tree.
Living the Barbie dream!
That dress is amazing and you look so good in it. Loved all the problem solving, home they might help me with con issues in the future. Loved all the Barbies together too.
Group cosplay like this is certainly something I want to do.
I loved seeing all the barbies together! how fun! great job!
It looks great!
The color of the fabric is what I was expecting for the dress in Beauty and the Beast....
Too bad we got a yellow monstrosity.
So adorable. Lovely. And all the barbies together was amazing.
I love the sweater! I'm going to check it out!
super cool and this dress silhouette is really flattering on you!
It turned out stunningly. I got a good chuckle watching your struggle to zip up the dress with both the wig and trim getting in the way. Very relateable for someone with waist length hair.
I LOVE your Barbie dress!! :D It's sooo PRETTY!! And you looked awesome with all the other Barbies! :D
You are amazing 🤩!! It’s perfect! Barbie’s got nothing on you!! By the way, love the vest you’re wearing 🎄🎄🎄
Lovely. I didn't realize how tall you are compared to the other Barbies. Of course, Barbie is very tall too!
When I was standing in the back row, I kept plie-ing so that my head wouldn't get cut off! And thank you!
Sorry that stuff didnt work for you, but for future use you can dye synthetic hair with rit dye more, ink, and even coffee works for deepening blonde wigs.
oh my goodness you are the cutest i love that you thought of filming the struggle of putting on the dress with the wig and everything because that is me getting ready with my natural hair when ever i wear it down its just every where and getting snagged on everything. Lots of fine long hair!
this was totally worth the wait i hope you had so much fun at the con
Gorgeous outfit, from head to toe! All that hand-sewing was definitely worthwhile!
❤️ to all the gorgeous Barbie’s!
Love it. So interesting to see the whole process!!
When you sew the fur try trimming it away in the seam allowances first. Easier and less bulky to sew. Looks beautiful and festive!
Your dress is magnificent, you make a most perfect holiday Barbie! It was so fun to see all the beautiful outfits together at the end as well ❤
You did such a fantastic job! If I saw you on the street, I’d know exactly what you were dressed as. I loved that Barbie so much, and you nailed all the details! 💛❤️💚
I am glad you had fun doing this, I am exhausted just from watching!! The dress is beautiful and you put a lot of work into it!
Fun project! Lovely execution.
I am just going to say you were the most beautiful and I admire everything you did to make this. Thank you.
You look so amazing! I broke into a sympathetic sweat watching you struggle with the zipper. Wet suits use the ribbon technique and I think dresses should too! Maybe you'll start a trend! Happy holidays!
Fantabulous! I absolutely love how yours turned out. A bit stressful for you, but worth it, I hope.
All were pretty, together a bit overwhelming, such fun! 😍😍😍
The fur shoulder belongs from Star Trek :D
Oh my god I am having the same issue with emailed Joann's receipts! I am so annoyed about it. Also, I love the earrings! They'd be so cute for non cosplay Christmas earrings.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! And thank you!
They were perfect!
Absolutely fabulous. The gowns were so gorgeous,
So incredibly lovely!
Glorious dress!!! What fun all of you together xxxxx
Lovely dress!
I love Kyne and her arithmetic ways! I haven’t checked out the drag content yet..
Absolutely beaiutiful job!
Beautiful!
So beautiful!
So fun and gorgeous
I have Rapunzel hair... past my knees. Yes, it is too much at times. I wear a sleep cap like my black friends and often tuck the whole thing into o a beret far too often. It’s such a beautiful gift of nature, though.
AMAZING WORK! What a joy to watch
Gorgeous. You efforts really paid off. Magic!
Congratulations!
Wonderful job.
You guys were fabtabulous!!!!!!!!!!
The dress is amazing and you looked so good✨✨✨ as a group! I want to make some babels earrings and maybe a shiny headband to😊
Such a beautiful job!! Unless you're south of the equator, the holidays are the colder time of the year. Why has Mattel made so many Holiday Barbies that are short sleeved or even strapless? I had goose bumps just watching. LOL
Yeah, a lot of the ladies got quite cold! I think it's probably because a ballgown would normally be worn inside, not outside.
Parties are always too hot and stage lights are hot too. However, you would certainly need a wrap if not a ful coat to get to the ball!
Hi,you looked adorable, when you first showed the shoulder fur I thought " humm furry bum pad ", 💖
Surprised they take returns, many shops here are refusing returns at present due to COVID and the risk of passing on the virus because it lingers on surfaces for so long.
Like the dress, have a vague memory of seeing these barbies when they came out, but my daughter wasn't a barbie fan so I didn't bother buying them.
One way to get the underskirt to work is just to make a petticoat with the front panel from the taffeta fabric. My daughter, when we were active in re-enactment, wore a Tudor dress and this is how we did her petticoat/under skirt. It also meant that the same dress could be worn with a variety of underskirts to change the look (it's also how they were done in period).
I don't like to quibble with anybody being super-careful about Covid, but they did decide months ago that surface contact was not a probable mode of transmission for this virus. It dies out pretty quickly once it leaves the infected person's respiratory tract, unless somebody else is close and breathes what they exhale. That's why we mask and try not to breathe too close to each other in public. Our library is still not taking book donations. They told us last year that all that disinfecting of our groceries was not necessary. Still with the variants, I guess it's best to be super-careful. You never know what tricks it has up its sleeve.
Nordstrom reopened their dressing room at least half a year ago. Costco stopped wiping down their cart handles before that. Walmart still won't let people try on clothes. The varying store policies naturally confuse people, but the official word is we don't need to worry about transmission from surfaces.
Omg it looks stunning and the whole group looked amazing! Love it and you! I *almost* have enough motivation now to try and do something big. Almost haha
Everything turned out so well! You all look gorgeous! I've only ever been to the tiny cons, like Norwescon (for Masquerade) and Ringcon (as a performer). Hoping to make it to ECCC someday!
Oh my god I thought I was the only one having issues with the emailed receipts! I was going to try to return some fabric the other day and realized that none of my receipts had come through for weeks!
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I wonder what's going on?
Your giant fur shoulder rolls would make great side-impact protection!
A lovely dress
But the rest of the costume looked ace.
I’m gonna get be a string for my zippers. Genius.
You’re so beautiful!
