Fire crew went a bit overboard. I love how much the crowd cheers when they see he’s okay. Considering open wheel racing cars back then weren’t exactly the safest, it’s amazing he walked away!
If you knew anything about indy cars they ran Methanol Fuel which burns pretty much invisible. There was already a fire from the oil so the fire crew took no chances.
The vintage early 80s SoCal surfer dude commentary (NSFW) really makes the video.

that fire didnot easily extinguish. that is reason for the powder use. alcohol fires are difficult to see.
no cars were safe lol

Golden footage! Thanks very much to the uploader & of course the camera guy.
You would not ever expect someone to walk away from a crash like that in 1982. He was one lucky guy
excellent cages were built into the car frames. is impressive.
Did he ever get the second tape!
2010s: OMG ARE YOU OK YOU COULD HAVE DIED DUDE
1982: You good dude?
I love how the fans just go running onto the track... LOL
Looked like a right rear tire failure that sent him into that ridiculous grass embankment.
All metal car back then no carbon fibre. Very Lucky man.
It was his left rear... you are looking at him coming at you.
holy crap
amazing video, how did you change it to 60fps?
Frame interpolation
@@TheFastlane thank you
weirdly, he finished 7th in this race.
because he crashed late in the race and there was a high attrition from others early on.
@@ILSRWY4 Yes I know. His best finish of the season too.
Wow, never saw this, was my first year of watching as a kid. Dick was a sleazy owner who ripped off his Indy Lights drivers.
Jesus saves!
SLAYER!!!
