Kindergarten | Fast and Slow song | Red Means Stop | by Donna Rhodenizer & Andy Duinker

Canadian composer and music educator, Donna Rhodenizer, has composed original singing games for young singers presented in three newly published collections. Red Means Stop is a repetitious song that focuses on fast and slow - and being careful! It is included in Singing Games for Young Singers VOL. 1. E-book and printed book info is at donnaandandy.c... Students love the opportunity to “go, go, go” when the light turns green. Listening for differences in the tempo of the song is an early emerging skill for young singers. Including movement with this song provides kinesthetic reinforcement of the concepts and also gives young singers a direction for their energy.
New Singing Games for Young Singers VOL. 2 is for students in grades 2-3, ages 7-9 and New Singing Games for Young Singers VOL. 3 is for singers in grades 4-5, ages 9-11.
Donna’s new singing games are fresh and fun. They provide a variety of songs with similar foundational skills and concepts can be internalized, isolated, labelled, and practiced so students have new musical examples while practicing specific concepts.
The singing games in this series:
• Create opportunities for play-based learning experiences for young singers in music classrooms and vocal studios.
• Refresh and update foundational singing games.
• Include scores both for teacher and student use.
• Give clear and easy-to-follow game instructions.
• Provide adaptations and options for use with large and small groups as well as with individual students.
• Offer teaching tips and pedagogical insights.
• List intended melodic and rhythmic focus and suggested grade/age ranges.
• Offer singers in upper grades/with more experience the opportunity to engage in melodic and/or rhythmic improvisation.
Donna also has compiled Welcome Songs, Greeting Songs and Name-learning songs and games. This is a GREAT addition to music classroom and vocal studio music resources.
