    I still remember opening up the two Russian SKS rifles I bought back in the mid 1990's. They were under $100 each back then. I still have both of them.

    Nice Rusky SKS, I own a Chinese SKS made in 1963 in Factory 26. It was in pretty rough shape when I bought it, no accessories either. Mine has the pinned and chromed barrel. Took a week to remove the Cosmo, rust and light corrosion from a lot of the rifle, the bore, bolt and receiver were primo. All matching numbers including the stock. Mine had to used in combat or as a trainer due to the wear on the bolt carrier and hammer. I use PPU 7.62 X 39 NON corrosive ammo only.
    After weeks of cleaning, polishing and lubrication, I headed out to the Range, she shoots new ! Good luck with yours.
    Pricy here now in NYS, about $399 for one.

      Love my 53 Tula. Had a Chinese stock on it. Went to the gun show and found a decent Russian stock. Hand-fitted it and took it to the range. Better accuracy and trigger than my 1964 Factory 26 Chinese model 56.
      You got a keeper there! Wish mine looked so good. But as a shooter and not a wall hanger, I don't really care so much.

    Got to love the classic unboxing! These rifles are selling like hotcakes on a cold january day in Canada. No wonder. These are great collectors and fun to shoot too. The Russian Tula / Izhevsk examples are examples from the cold war. I picture children being instructed to hide underneath a classroom desk in the case of nuclear attack. To me they are the last of wooden/forged steel rifles that still had throwbacks to the much earlier Mosin Nagant turnbolt rifle. The SKS is an anachronism in a sense, and still a very capable rifle. Great all around rifle for the comman man.

I'm going to ass this one to my collections of sks that I don't touch. I've got three so far. These baby's are going to go like hot cakes just like svt 40's a few year's from now.

    In Canada centerfire semi-automatic rifle magazines must be limited to 5 round capacity. Higher capacity magazines that have been modified prior to importation to only accepts 5 rounds are acceptable. It is not required to replace the original magazine with a shorter one.

    • @optimusmikey
      @optimusmikey 9 років тому +2

      +cstorvold that's stupid. At least you can get .50 Beowulf AR mags and put 15 rounds of 5.56 in them

    • @cstorvold
      @cstorvold  9 років тому +1

      *****
      I agree and you bring up a good point. The way the law is written, it is legal to "overstuff" a magazine. For example, pistol magazines are limited to 10 rounds of the designed caliber. This means you can take a .40 caliber magazine, fill it with 9mm and if it works in your gun you are good to go. Also, for example, if you have a 10 round 5.56 pistol magazine, you can fill it and use it in your rifle. There are a couple other "loopholes" as well.

There was a shop at this farmers market where this guy had these all lined up prices ranged from $180-$200. Now they’re more than doubled. Now I’m fighting to find them. I recently got a Chinese one that actually is built pretty nice but I’ve re-done it with Tapco stock, added a blade bayonet, and a couple more accessories that make it function like an AK.

    Those are high quality. I definitely would not buy the Chinese one. I have Romanian ones myself. There's no stamped Parts on them they're all machine parts. They are better than a Mini-14 Ranch Rifle. The ranch rifles are good but I'd rather be using a 7.62-39 that's the same round as a 47 uses mine have the blade bayonet as well. There's a lot of aftermarket parts for them as well. Such as with scope mount which is you remove the top cover on the receiver and put the new cover on that has the rails for the scope it's Weaver-style rails. You're going to enjoy that rifle. Get your month self a bunch of stripper Clips makes it easy to reload from the top. My Romanian models have a little trapdoor on the butt stock of the rifle. And that's where the cleaning kit goes. You may find that yourself as well on yours. You also may find that The Leather Pouch you found all your cleaning stuff in is the proper size to put stripper Clips with rounds on them in it's probably got a loop to hang it on your belt. With all my leather pouches after cleaning them I soak them in rubbing alcohol it makes the leather very pliable then I stuff crumpled-up newspaper inside them and shape them the shape they need to be then let them dry out and they retain their shape. You'll also find that that rifle makes a good deer rifle. Or coyote control. WD-40 on a rag is good to get the cosmoline off. That way you're not putting anything on it to cause it to rust. Take it apart and clean it good. And in an effort to avoid being harassed by local authorities remove the bayonet. They will use that as an excuse to confiscate your rifle. 10-round fixed Magazine on those things stripper Clips hold 10 Rounds as well. After the 10th round is fired out of the rifle the bolt will lock in the position back then you grab a slip stripper clip. Stop the rounds in then pull the bolt back a little bit and let it go forward and it will chamber the next round. And thanks for helping to preserve our 2nd Amendment rights. Have a nice day happy shooting enjoy your new rifle. On some of the Surplus websites they have a special can opener for those big ammo cans I believe I bought mine at cheaper than dirt . com also check out The Sportsman's Guide they may have them as well. Or Google ammo can opener and see what you come up with.

    Also the semantics of that city name are quite nice, "dar" is a "gift", "kras" is a base for words like "krasiviy"(nice, beautifull) "krasniy"(red) no communist/red army relation! The red color was thought of as beautiful and sacred by ancient Rus' people, could be because its the color of blood

    What does this shoot? How much more for amo ... or how much did you pay for the 1400 rounds of Russian amo?

    • @cstorvold

      7.62x39. Paid $310 at the time, looks like the price has gone up about $30.

      I am enjoying it! I used it in our clubs first SKS shoot a couple weeks ago. Got 4th place out of 14. Not bad for its first competitive run.

    I'm torn between an SKS and a Mini 14. Which one would you say is more functional? SKS has alot of character I think... But functionality? Thoughts?

    • @cstorvold
      @cstorvold  8 років тому +1

      I don't have mini 14 experience. My 2c is, if you don' have a specific purpose for your purchase other than good times, buy for value and cheap readily available ammo.

      Do you mean mini-30? The mini -14 are junk, the mini-30s too. I outshot one freehand with an sks with no issues what so ever. Ruger's mini line is big junk. Ruger...$750+ for junk Buy an sks and never worry.
