If you go lab grown you can save a lot. I dropped about 3.5k and got a good deal compared to most retailers. U dont wanna break the bank but that ring is a representation of you when she interacts with people.

Myself I spent close to 1300 total which was 100 percent of my check on engagement ring
with the price of gold, lately, it turns out platinum is cheaper.
