Why did you have to tie the sash around your waist?

“This is a long narrow cloth, about 20cm wide and 1.5 meters long. It is worn around the waist by both males and females for prayers or preparations for rituals. The selendang is symbolic of controlling the emotions and the five senses. It is believed to act as a reminder of the difference between the upper world and the lower world by acting as a barrier between the upper and lower body. This is to ensure that people will have a pure, clear mind before entering any temple or engaging in holy work. And do you know? There is a difference between male and female in the location of the selendang’s knot. Male Balinese tie the knot on the right side of the waist and females on the left.” -Komaneka Resorts Blog
Great question! I knew the sarongs were worn to show modesty and respect at temples but I never thought about the purpose of the sash.
