  • Plymouth Meeting Mall has seen a lot over the years, and has been subjected to quite a bit as well. Let's go for a walk in this old Philadelphia-region Mall.

That Gruen architecture is a sight to behold. But with so little else to differentiate it from King of Prussia, which is just down the road, I'm surprised this mall didn't die when IKEA moved out 20 years ago.

I grew up in that mall. I'm glad you showed the tree stump at the end; I thought you had missed it. It has been on the wall from the beginning, a cutting from a 200 year old tree on the site that was cut down to make room for the mall, pointing out the historical events that happened at each ring of the tree, ending with the "historical event" of the tree being cut down to make way for the mall. Even as a child the idea that this tree was cut down to make space for the mall broke my heart while at the same time it fascinated me that the tree was cut down in the year I was born. As we approached the Bicentennial a few years later, the city became more conscious of identifying and preserving 200 year old trees.

Was just chatting with a friend about the mall a few weeks ago. We used to get dropped off every Friday and Saturday night to walk the mall and hit the arcade. Late 80s early 90s. If we couldn't get a ride we hopped the bus from 3rd and Fayette. Those were the good old days. Haven't been to this mall in 18 years since moving to central Florida. Last memory I have is getting to meet Kevin Bacon here and watch him filming some scenes from the woodman. It really don't matter where you live all malls are dying. The mall here in Ocala Florida is on its way out as well. Online shopping has killed it. Great video

That vacant hallway near the church on the mall (which used to be known anyway for its weekend night dancing parties) was where the old movie theater was all along that side of the hallway. I grew up going here in the 70s & 80s. I miss the old mall before the remodel, moving the theater, the main concourse diner, woolworths also had a great diner in here. The arcade was massive all down that long hallway you entered when you came in on the left. It was a great place to play and shop as a kid. The fountain used to do more and had more effects back then too. They changed it quite a bit. Twice actually. The first time was in the mid 80s when the Government started policy requiring recycling water, and again with the remodel it lost a lot of kool features. Also they took out the massive clock with the bells that chimed Westminster chime. You could hear it throughout the mall. Lots of great memories there.

I thought it was Plymouth Meeting Mall on the preview image! I been there many times. Only good thing left for me is Dave & Busters. I use the entrance the most by Dave & Busters and Chipotle Mexican Grill because that’s where the bus stop is at as well. Those who need to take transit, bus routes served at the Plymouth Meeting Meeting are Septa’s 27, 90, 95, 98, 150 and L. Route 27 is the most direct from downtown Philadelphia starting at Broad & Carpenter south of City Hall.

Having frequented that mall in the late eighties and early nineties and seen it bustling and all the storefronts filled, it looks like the mall is living on life support now.

It was recorded in 2021. People staying home as pandemic was still rolling on. It's got a bit more foot traffic now.

10:18 That cross-section of the old tree with points in time from history has always been fascinating. It's good to see they've kept it through the renovations.

I actually like this one-its the small touches that make a big difference...The yellow bus, the fountains (of course) and the carousel-its also bright and not drab or dreary looking.

in the 1980s all that empty space used to be full of people and stores. there were so many affordable things to buy. the little twin cinema was everything. Boscov's is the only store keeping it alive. I was thrilled when they moved in long ago. was a big blow in more recent years to lose payless and now shoe dept. Church on the mall i always thought was weird and nice, even in my 80s metal days, glad it remains today.

It opened with a huge bird cage, and a Woolworth with a pet department and Strawbriges had a nice pool at base of escalators and movie theater was excellent.was an event when it opened in 66.

I worked at Plymouth Meeting in my youth from 91 to the middle of 94. Thanks for going to the church section. Of course everything has changed as it should so that was a pinpoint to let me know where my old job would have been. 🙏🏾✌🏾

If only the Dicks SG was a Bass Pro shop instead. The mall still has the feel of an older center even with the renovations. I really liked this mall, especially the fountain.

This mall was my childhood, what made it one of the best wasn't just the classic carousel, but also the lively food court. Whoever got rid of that to put in a Legoland Discovery Center really needs a brainscan, as the food court would've at least kept the mall from slowly dying. There also used to be two gamestops in the mall, but now their both gone. These days, the owners of the mall are spending money on unnecessary gimmicks for kids, which is only taking the focus of what mall should be about, the shops. I only pray that someone swoops in, saves the mall, and makes it back to what made it popular in the first place. Until then, my biggest fear is that their gonna eventually take away the carousel I love so much.

The amount of news articles (both free and cost to view) and development plans over the years concerning this mall is very confusing. Looks like preit is most recently looking to sell the property, but there’s also articles about the apartment plans for here and several of their malls. Well, thanks for posting the vid. Good work trying to tell the story and document.

I need to check this mall out next time I am in the Philly region. I always go to King of Prussia, but that place is exhausting. This looks so much more manageable. It's a pretty good mall, seems to be doing well. PF Chang's is a nice option

  • @georgemcgowanfl

I've only been there once and even ate at the Chipotle which is to your left when you entered the mall. It's actually a pretty nice mall with a good selection of restaurants, particularly PF Chang's and Dave & Buster's. And Dick's Sporting Goods and Burlington are solid anchors, considering all the major department store chains that are dying off (looking at you, Sears, Penney's and Macy's). I'm sure a lot of closures were due to the pandemic. Plymouth Meeting's problem is it's too close to King of Prussia. But that could be a good thing. This could be the local's mall, whereas KOP is a destination. Another thing, this mall reminds me of Woodbridge Center in New Jersey.

Raw and Real Retail covered this mall. I don't like this mall. The fountain is not bad. My favourite thing about the fountain is how big it is.😊⛲I also really like that giraffe outside. Cute.🦒

I was raised going to Catholic Church and it took me a long time to find out that there are a lot of things off about it. Also I don't mind non Catholic churches. It's only the hypocrites who go to church that I don't like. I experienced some of that hypocrisy personally from someone.

    44,000+ denominations in the US.
How many more in the world?
    All preaching, teaching differently.
    Better hope you picked right.
