"New York is the biggest mouth in the world. It appears to be prime example of the herd instinct, leading the universal urban conspiracy to beguile man from his birthright (the good ground), to hang him by his eyebrows from skyhooks above hard pavement, to crucify him, sell him, or be sold by him."
"Out of Americas rugged individualism captained by rugged captains of our rugged industrial enterprises we have gradually evolved a crude, vain power: plutocratic capitalism. Not true capitalism. I believe this is entirely foreign to our own original idea of democracy."
"America needs no help to Broadacre City. It will haphazard build itself. Why not plan it?"
"Inevitably, there will develop a new form of community life, but just what it will be except as Broadacre City tentatively outlines it as free to grow, who can say? Not I. Who is going to say how humanity will eventually be modified by all these spiritual changes and physical advantages, sound and vision coming through solid walls to men, each aware of anything in or of the world he lives in without lifting a finger, making it unnecessary to go anywhere unless it is a pleasure to go. The whole psyche of humanity is changing and what that change will ultimately bring as future community I will not prophecy. It is already greatly changed."
More than anything else, more than architecture, Wright stood for integrity, genuineness and ingenuity that very well reflect in his buildings. He was an idealistic and individualistic man and sat through interviews with dull witted and cocky journalists to inspire youngsters to stand up and fight for more meaningful things in life. I believe he had life figured out more than any man I have ever known and his unwavering passion and character almost makes you want cry.
I m currently studying architecture (much more from his books and talks than anything that is being taught in college) in India and every time I feel hopeless about the current system and it's uninspired conformity, I remember him and realize that some things are worth fighting for. I hope I can live up to the ways of this great master.

Frank Lloyd Wright is absolutely right. The world is too concerned with trying to make everything artificial.
Frank Wright is without a doubt the greatest artist this country has produced and probably the greatest the western world has yet produced, except maybe Vincent or Leonardo.

Let me start again: People who criticize Wright are typically frustrated about something.

In listening to this creative genius, it makes me hate even more developers, real estate agents, the building department, interior designers, and most of all ignorant and arrogant and self-centered clients who think they can dictate to architects what is best; because they only think in terms of square feet and the "bottom line". All of these characters have contributed to the mediocrity that is the modern built experience. Today we are in dire need of creative thinkers in architecture like Frank Lloyd Wright. Architects in the U.S. today need to stop being cowards and starts applying the education that they learned in the great schools of architecture. Start thinking and stop being afraid of losing contracts if you insist on actually creating architecture.
You mean build more residences without closets, adequate storage spaces and leaky roofs?
I'm a Wright fan, but while he was certainly a great designer, he did often leave something to be desired in many of his works in regard to functionality. Both are needed.

Amen. Americans deserve and should demand better, but are willingly kept ignorant.
He was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, and as such the minds of artists view things from a different part of the mind. His views of conforming to his ideals and leading others in his beliefs made him a leader. I think of this man as the greatest architect/artist of his time. But I also view him as a man with his own interests driving him as any human does to achieve his own agenda. I have always seen artists as things of wonder, but when it comes to letting them on political fronts they seem to use their fantastic fantasies to see things as they truly aren't. Leaving his wife and children to exploit his own interests in whatever it was, shows his ideals as a human being. Artists see the world as theirs, a selfish view, helping to create their masterpieces. If we all thought this way, it would be a cruel world. Quoting F.L.W. "God sees my flaws as a man, but not as an architect". I love his architecture and artistry, but don't care for his political views, as they do not work in society. And if you lived in a world he would have created it would have his societal laws as any other and would restrict free thinking of other sorts. I believe in nature, but I don't view a fruitful life is the one he views, to each his own.
What side of the political isle do you think he sits? I don’t get what you mean when talking about his politics..
@@ryanburdeaux this post was made 7 years ago. I can't recall exactly his political alignment at moment. I researched it, disagreed, and moved on and haven't really thought about his political views for years and don't need to research it again. I would imagine it was a utopian mentality and usually people at the top of that system fare well.

My belief is that every human has a sense of what makes him or her feel alive, some it is a huge city made to look up and see the vast space which is the universe, others are content with organic view, the mountain, a field. To each his own, and no one is wrong in their views. Ever growing population growth is what causes the demand for more land development, this man had no problem creating demand by multiplying, so he was short sided in how things work that way. Much of his influence came from Japan, which is very urban. Still one of the greatest artist of his time. He was not a God, but a man who got his influence from geometry as a young boy and used it for great architecture. I am not trolling, but simply saying don't make him a martyr. He was a great architect/artist.

machines enabled construction of a faster speed and I think this faster speed did make its way into design more than anything because when it took so much time to construct before machines craftsmen were often within base with a project, but now a machine allows construction so fast many of the intercases have disapared.... Even using machines for more detailed facades has been forgone for speed.

Now a man of the 21st century... an answer to pandemic and congestion and frustrations and massification and dehumanizing... he had the design philosophy of nature... study his Broad Acre system on land for each man, sustainability and culture.

architects are so busy worrying about interior space and have forgotten about exterior space
