How do the horses understand these languages? Are they trained to understand the cues or is it natural to them?

I have seen jockeys riding horses and I rode one once, but all I got it to do was run fast, or stop, thanks for this information, now I know how to make a horse walk. Smart animals with dumb humans on top don't make for a good ride.
