I may be considered a superhero within a nonprofit dance company for the volunteer work I’ve done behind the scenes, mostly in the costume department. My favorite show I helped with was “Alice in Wonderland”, for which I sewed a few tutus, altered some costumes, custom made ears for the Cheshire Cat, and even converted a simple chair into a throne for the Queen of Hearts. Then I got to work on show-day as a mad hostess, greeting guests with questionable edibles. It was a truly amazing experience which I will not forget any time soon.
I forgot to mention that this show was different from most because it had a walk-through setup, with each room having its own scene and version of Alice. Most of the costume alterations involved creating some level of consistency across the different versions of Alice since the available costumes were: 1. an old Wendy costume from "Peter Pan" with a romantic tutu, 2 & 3. two identical old Clara costumes from the "Nutcracker" with empire waists, and 4. an old unused costume with an empire waist which could be altered to resemble costumes 2 & 3. I also made tutus to go under costumes 2-4 to help match the fullness of costume 1's romantic tutu. Sadly, one of those tutus was not used because I accidentally put too many layers of tulle into it. Fortunately, the difference was not overly noticeable.
