Hi, I am a very keen singer. I am Mezzo but since mid July 2017 my range has extended dramatically, in both registers. That said, my high voice has extended the most and my head voice is stronger than my chest voice. I have just been practising your coloratura exercises here in this video (not finished it yet!) and kept up with it. I don't think I am (yet) soprano but I am a lot more comfortable (and stronger voiced) singing high than low. Does one have to want to become a coloratura soprano in the first instance, in other words train themselves to be so, or can this develop in time? I hope you don't think this is a stupid question, but I am SO interested in all singing aspects. I can sing up to C Sharp most of the time and find the soprano songs in musicals easy. Also I can sing Dream a Dream (Elysium) with no problem, and can sing the word Elysium and hold it for quite some time. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and kind regards to you, along with many thanks indeed.

Remember to keep your jaw relaxed 😌! No tension in your jaw or neck stay relaxed and focus on singing up into your head voice. Especially if you want to be a coloratura! Head space is important. 💕💜 x

Alice G Sundy. Thank you so very much for replying. I will absolutely take heed with what you have said. I practise every day and I do try and keep relaxed. I always drink warm lemon and honey water whilst practising and singing, but never alcohol and I am careful with caffeine. When I sing the ee's in practice, I stick my tongue out a little on the very high notes. My genre is musical theatre, but I have recently "broken" into light opera, so along with Dream a Dream (Elysium), I sing O Mio Babbino Caro, and Ave Maria. Again many thanks, and kind regards. xx

Many many thanks for your reply. I take your advice greatly. I would absolutely love to be helped and trained by a voice teacher. We live in rural France, and finding one would be extremely difficult, that is if there were any English speaking ones, which would likely hail from Paris, if at all. That was my reason for looking on the internet. If you would like the site I am subscribed to, I will gladly tell you, but I am not one for just doing so without being asked (I am not being difficult here). I must say I never knew all those things you mention had a connection with voice type. That is all so interesting. I have researched many aspects on various sites, and I think (hope) I know the signs of having caused damage to vocal chords. I can sing for longer at a time now, but I also know when I should stop. I drink lemon and honey water all through singing and practice. You have been SO helpful in your reply, that I say just ask me if you would like to know the name of the tutor on the site I use. One of my reasons for asking you about coloratura, is because I have broken into light opera (I will never be an opera singer as such, and that is not my aim) - O Mio Babbino Caro and Ave Maria. I just love to talk about singing, so I will always be pleased and utterly thankful for any advice. Kindest regards to you.

Voice types are more than just your vocal range it is also the weight of your voice , your voice's timbre , and tessitura , there is more to it but I am just explaining the basics... People of different voice types can have vocal ranges that nearly look identical or they can have the same range , for a example let's say a soprano and a contralto have the same vocal range and sing the same note . The two singers would still sound different because of their timbre , tessitura , and vocal weight... Sopranos tend to have a light , bright , ringing voice , mezzo-sopranos voices tend to sound darker and heavier and more rich voice than a soprano but are still lighter than contraltos, and contraltos or as they are called in choir altos , have a dark , husky , and rich voice... Timbre is the quality of the voice and it ties in with what I just said . Tessitura is referred to as your sweet spot when singing it is where you are the most comfortable singing at and were your voice sounds the best sopranos are more comfortable with high notes , mezzos are comfortable in the middle and contraltos are comfortable with low notes. With this being said coloratura sopranos' voices tend to be lighter and brighter than regular lyric sopranos depending on what type of coloratura soprano she is ... I would say stay in your comfortable range for now and find your tessitura and have someone help you determine your timbre and vocal weight , recording yourself sing also helps but it is always better to have more than one opinion before you categorize yourself...
A good way to build range is lip trills but the most important thing is if when you are singing and it hurts drop out and come back in when when you can sing the note this does not only apply to the high notes ...

Renee Baker. Thank you so very much for taking time to write to me. I have done a fair bit of studying via the net now, because I want to learn properly and sing the best I can. I have read about the timbre and tessitura, but not about vocal weight. Does that mean the strength of the voice used. I would imagine it depends upon a singer's classification, but please, feel free to explain it in better terms. I am always willing to learn more. I would guess from the things you say, that being able to reach C Sharp and Top C in practice doesn't necessarily mean a person can sing songs that reach those notes (?). I can reach top C easily in practice, but I do not reach as high as that when singing normally. I fully understand the 3 categories and their comfortable ranges. Many thanks for your advice to stay in my comfortable range for now. I am actually recording my voice now. I have downloaded the Audacity site but I am still in the throes of learning how to use it properly. I cannot edit very well yet, but my brother in law in the UK has edited some of my songs (that is to say, blending other music into, or replacing the music, the songs I send over). I would absolutely LOVE to have a voice coach listen to me and properly classify my voice, but living in rural France makes that so difficult. I didn't realise that lip trills help build the range, so that is very interesting, and my throat never hurts when I sing, but again I would take your advice there, and also when the singing is not going as well as I would like, or I can't record a song to my personal satisfaction, then at that point I also stop. We all have our off days, I would imagine (?) Whether it varies from person to person, how much practice should be done before singing, I don't know, but in general I tend to do a couple of 10 to 15 minute lessons, or sometimes a longer one, plus a short programme of say 5 minutes. Please feel free to write with any other advice, because singing has become such a vital and important part of my life now, and I love hearing from people who are willing to help and advise. Again, many thanks. Kind regards.

Hattie It is true that most coloratura soprano arias have vocal ranges that go from C6-F6. However, coloratura is actually a vocal technique in arias, songs, and exercises, which require a lot of elaborate vocal cadenzas, leaps, jumps, and trills, which anyone can master.
