- Dave looks at possibly the world's most dangerous consumer product, a portable electrode boiler based water heater available on ebay.
Marketed as "safe", it is nothing less than a death trap!
EDIT: Holy crap! They sell this as a baby bath heater!

+redtails hahahahahahahaha
no complaints thus far
+redtails They must somehow know that their customers' remaining life cannot be that long.
+redtails But WAIT!!! The buyer won't even place a negative feedback from underground!! That's genius!!
+redtails Cause it doesn't have a heating element, and I also assume it has no fuse, so it will never burn out, there's nothing that can go wrong with it. The customer will die long before the product :)
Would be interesting to measure the actual current from water to ground
+mikeselectricstuff as far as i remember bigclivedotcom did exactly that :)
+muh1h1 Do we all watch the same channels?
Rob Fenwitch seams like it :D
We all have a good taste :)

It's like a "DIY" water heater developed by prisoners, using two razor blades, spacers, and a power cable...
yep. Basically a stinger but at least when you make one of those you know touching the liquid is gonna really be bad. lol
+synterr Yep.The same way we did it in the Polish army (90's)
:)
Why would you use the razors for that when you can make a weapon with them
When you want coffee, not blood.
xD
Umm 28 sold ?
BigClive bought maybe half of them, the rest was bought by BigClive subscribers.
One moment please...
Okay, I'm back. 29 now sold.
This is not the worst they made. They made a bigger one for a baby bath(baby bath warmer). Imagine putting your baby in a bath of death.
+barnabás horváth I've now linked to this one, incredible!
+EEVblog check bigclivedotcom channel: he analyzed that long ago and has a huge collection of that kind of devices with mains directly connected to parts that a user could touch.
+GeekTechReviews It's from China. In China, this is population control. Children inherit the Darwin Award due to their parents actions.
Seegal Galguntijak Don't joke about it. We don't normally see this in the market like at all.

In soviet union everyboye used(in travels or in case of survival purposes) DIY device with same principle of operation.
Two blades for shaving, two wires, and matches for mechanical connection...fatal defect was that it can\t boil soup, because soup should be salted :-D
+Приборостроительница
Heh, "survival purposes".
Everyone used compact resistance-wire based immersion heaters, razor blade heaters were known only to some ex-servicemen and ex-convicts.
These modern electrode boilers are much safer, not only because of robust construction, but also because (ideally) they use electrodes made of alloys that will not contaminate water. And talking 'bout safety: people, just use your common sense.
Also, salt increases liquid's conductivity, so why can't electrode boiler heat a salty soup? :)
Your comment clears all. How electrolysis soup taste?
What about the Soviet mains gas stove lighters? Literally a self-oscillating solenoid that causes huge sparks at the plunger's contact point that can be used to light the gas. Only thing limiting the current is the coil, which gets really hot if used for more than a few seconds.
@@PunakiviAddikti I once got electrocuted by it when trying to clean it with knife without removing the cord. It got dirty and sticky from gas products. Accidentaly pushed button while touched with knife... it was valuable lesson.

4:50 This is incredibly late but yes, if you electrolyse water with chloride in it, it releases chlorine gas, especially when your overpotential is 120 to 240 V. This product is insane.
Crybabies. I made this when i was 17 to make tea. Tastes metallic.
@ yeah their's probably adds a nice touch of sugar free sweetness.
This comes with the Dignitas Home Kit.
LMAO
Check out Bigclive mains shower head water heater.
+John Fountaine wat -___-
+richfiles LOL yup. Apparently popular in places like Taiwan, Vietnam.. basically poorer Asian countries with warm climates.
+Jesse Crandle Indeed, they are disturbing creations (to me at least) I assume not enough incidents happen that they get too much of a bad rep there but I would prefer a different method of heating the water myself (heating element with an insulator between the conductive element and water for example) and a good earthing system at the very least.
I don't know if it's serious or not but I have seen images out there where they put a cup with some dirt in there and a wire into it calling that "earthing". Might be a joke, might be some bullshit people seriously do.
BigClive showed one of these too, they seem so safe...
Not to mention this thing might be producing hexavalent chromium in that water if the plates are cheapo stainless steel.
Not to mention the plastic of quite possibly dubious chemicals that sticks in your boiling water.
Not to mention the greenhouse gasses that we’re produced by the people in China when commuting to work to manufacture this product.
It's not likely that they would be using stainless steel if they were trying to be cheap: Stainless steel is actually more expensive than ordinary steel, by quite a long way. The plates are probably just the cheapest steel they can get their hands on, coated with a few microns of nickel or possibly even tin to stop it rusting when immersed in water. Of course the most ideal material to make the plates from for this application would be copper or brass, but those are also far more expensive than steel.
@ Gold is far too expensive for it being $3. It's likely just aluminium. Aluminum is very stable, one tier down in efficiency than gold (gold is actually lower than people tend to think it is with silver, copper, anealed copper on top of it), and is drastically cheaper and accessible. No way in hell they would use gold in something this cheap. It wouldn't break even. Plus even in the video you can see it is most certainly not gold.

If that doesnt kill you the device will call a hitman to be sure
I could tell that my parents hated me.
My bath toys were a toaster and a radio.
brave little toaster
How is a radio dangerous? I get toaster, but not a normal AM/FM radio
@@neyoid Some radios are mains powered.
They were creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, they were all together ooky, but they didn't hate you.
Big Clive covered this a few weeks ago. Ironically probably not as dangerous as the electrically heated shower head he also covered.
+ChinnyVision - The Retro Game Review Channel Few weeks? bigclive has been buying and "reviewing" electrolysis heaters for closer to a year, possibly more. As a kid, I used to have a humidifier that worked on this principle too, that's ~30 years ago.
+Teardown Dan He also found a bath water heater with instructions like "do not insert baby while heating water. "
Teardown Dan I only saw the Big Clive video a few weeks ago. Fairly new to his channel.
I’ve actually seen someone test one with a multimeter. It’s actually impossible to shock you as designed. Seeing as I used one in Central America, that’s reassuring to know now!!!!
Teardown Dan In the 2000s they were still humidifier working like that. But at least the water is enclosed.
I'll buy one for my mother in law telling her it's for a detox foot bath.
Just kidding..
This was a common fixture in my grandmother's house when I was growing up. We also metal buckets. It has blown quite a few fuses but I guess that is cheaper than a wall mounted water heater.
This reminds me of a device we would build in jail to heat water for our tea and coffee at night.
Big Clive reviewed this weeks ago squeaky.

+Neil Robinson
Gotta love our Big Clive :)
Indeed - yep clive has looked at a few. The death shower one is really bad.
I believe he looked at one for a baby bath...
+Neil Robinson First thought!
Somebody should inform ebay they're selling potentially lethal goods. Knowing them they'd remove the item quickly.
Yeah, but they don't know diddly dick about mains voltage and how this thing is not safe. Unless someone sends them this video.
they re-tag the item as "bdsm extreme"
eBay doesn’t give a damn. As long as they’re making money, they don’t care. I’m not just making an ignorant comment about it, either. I’ve tried to tell them about dangerous/counterfeit products. I’ve tried to tell them about scams, that Chinese sellers are doing. They truly don’t care. Their customer support is based in the Philippines, far away from anyone, who can do anything about it, even if they wanted to.
eBay don't care, same as Amazon. Dangerous goods, counterfeit goods, fake CE stickers, fake seller information, etc. They don't give a shit.
Can you imagine? The seller would be out of the loop for about 0.3 seconds before they throw up a new storefront and carry on as usual.
The ad to "Join Medibank Basic Hospital today" is particularly appropriate.
Better not use it as a sex toy.
BigClive has done several videos on these.
+Robert Hickman Yep old news .
+Barrybados©. New news to me and no doubt many others.
+EEVblog He has even done a much bigger one. meant for babys baths
+Robert Hickman This one is actually pretty safe compared to some of the ones he's done teardowns on. The suicide showerhead is downright scary.
A little late to the party on this one, Dave. Big Clive did a video on these months ago. Also, the hypochlorite thing at 4:40 is likely trying to say that it converts salt water into bleach (sodium hypochlorite, NaClO) and hydrogen gas. (H2)
5:44
Got to love the Medibank insurance Hospital cover ad just above Dave's head. Funeral cover might be more useful.
You missed a educational point in this video. Here you just show that it works, and people not familiar with electricity don't see the problem. But if you had put a metal spoon in a glass while this was heating, then you could measure the voltage between the spoon and ground to be half of the mains.
A very likely use of this is to heat tea, and some will eventually add sugar and start stirring before it has finished heating, and then would get shocked if they had any connection to ground.
+hoplahey Which is exactly what bigclivedotcom already did
Good point - videos like this are half outrage / face-palm and half educational. There are his usual viewers who have a bit of knowledge about electricity & electronics, and people who will read the title and click b/c it was interesting. He could've gave a few examples of how people might use this unwittingly.
If you have 120v mains, you can mostly get away with devices like this, though I still don't recommend it. 60v is VERY different than 120v. Heated shower heads are popular in mexico and south america, and you can feel the electricity flowing over your skin as you shower. Invigorating!
Apparently in Turkey you can buy electric jugs based on the same Idea, Big Clive had one on his youtube show
Saw it on Bigclive. Awesome stuff.
Yup, me too :)
+Distortionize +1 for BigClive.com
hooray for cheao chinese products
I just ordered one.
Should be fun.
I love cheap chinese deadly electonics
I was already laughing when you said that's some fine Chinglish there....and just lost it.
I accidentily invented this product a few years ago. The scar tissue is almost unnoticeable now.
18 years ago we had a Gerber baby bottle warmer when our son was an infant -- you put 1/2 a cup of water in, it would boil it, you put the bottle in the sleeve above the boiling water (separated by a plastic plate with holes in it) and the rising steam would heat the bottle. I stuck one of the probes of my meter in the water and the other to ground... Measured 120 volts. I stopped using it after that.
I think the suicide shower is worse than that, bigclive did a review on it
Oh yeah, that freakin' deathtrap x'D
Thanks for sharing, Dave. Hard to believe that exists.
Omg So funny! I actually looked up the "portable hole warmer" without thinking. How embarrassing, lol:)
I love it when Dave comments on "chinglish".....You're Australian, You don't have much room to maneuver when it comes to butchering the English Language.
+Reinforce Zwei I'll pay that.

Love the vast majority of your videos :P
+Reinforce Zwei One of the reasons I watch is to learn new and colorful terms from Dave. It's really cool to tell my coworkers "...and Bob's you're uncle!" when something goes right.
+Reinforce Zwei Let me introduce you to AvE and his wonderful "Canadian" "English"
+Ry P Chooch is now part of my vocabulary.
Could it be designed for 120V and not 240V? could be why it's drawing 1+kW instead of ~500W. It's not safe operating a device above it's rated voltage!
+Smidge204 Sydney water has more salts in it hence conducts electricity better than other places.
+BeachSandInspector Technologies Conductivity is very non-linear with ion concentration. A little bit of salt will result in a huge increase in conductivity, but double the salt will not double the conductivity. So even if the water has more ionic minerals in it, it would have to be undrinkably salty to account for double the power usage.
+BeachSandInspector Technologies Or, of course, the 500W rating could be complete bullshit. That's just as likely in this case... or possibly more likely.
+Smidge204 The power rating is pointless, it's entirely based on the water used.
+Smidge204 This one is marked 220V
4:35 "Thats some fine Chinglish there, I love it" lol
6:15 - to be honest, YOUR five year old would also probably know how hotwire cars, build his own radio and repair his own toys.
Big Clive has done a lot on these on his (excellent) UA-cam channel.
Also available as a shower head with integrated heater... Guess you're no longer sleeping after your morning shower ;)
yep, bigclivedotcom took a look at it, they do have an earth wire just befire the water goes out but still how about noooooo
Never died on one of those, water spray can't conduct.
@Luiz Felipe, Yaaaah. And nothing there could possibly go wrong. Definitely.
Shower head heaters are quite common in less developed countries and people get shocked or electrocuted quite frequently.

hi dave. bigclive have one xD
+Proyectos LED Whenever I think of these dildos of death I think of Clive, bigClive
+Rounak Dutta hehehe, me too!
+Proyectos LED He has about 4 by now.
What about the Suicide Shower that we use in Brazil?
I think is more dangerous.
Apparently home-built versions of this were fairly common in Soviet Russia, consisting of bits of wood and two razor blades. I think the back story is that soldiers were not allowed to have any electric stuff but still wanted some tea or coffee so they worked with what they had. Another trick along those lines was sticking a fork into each end of a sausage and connecting the forks to the mains. Apparently some of the crazier grammar school physics teachers still show that to kids.
It is an electrode heater. It is not an electrolysis device when used with AC current. Yes, you are not supposed to touch the water while it is in use.
big clive has done multiple videos on these
+Glebs Litvjaks This could be a hole warmer if you're brave enough ;)
+Darcy Ferrer even better is the heated shower head which puts mains directly "above" your head
yes, everyone interested to see more of why these are deadly, go check him out.
LOL. "Stick them up a hole and warm things up". Great device for people looking to heat up water to soak your foot......unless you forget to unplug it first! :-)
That'll warm up your foot much faster. lol
I’ve used one of these before... except the element was just bare, exposed metal. Of course this was also in a partially collapsed building in Mexico City so that might tell you something about how relevant safety was.
can someone explain how do you get shocket if the closed circuit is the water not your body ?
Big Clive has reviewed something even worse than this it's a shower head that uses the same heating principal. It relies on the water forming droplets and have fairly low conductivity to stop you going bang.
Not entirely true, that shower head uses a non isolated heating coil and earthing and is actually safe if installed properly. Wouldnt trust the earthing tho.
+Wobblycogs Workshop I read that in big Clive's voice.
Oh wow. And it probably adds some good Chinese minerals to the water too!
This brought me back to the ol' times. I live in Mar del Plata, Argentina, when i was a kid, we had this tiny "grocery store", it was like... 3 by 5 meters in total, and aside for the main part (where things were sold and all that stuff) we had this REALLY tiny place at the back, where I had to be when I was not playing with my little group of friends on that part of the city, that had really little time to play, so I spent hours in that place. It was like a big truck's back cabin, it had a little TV, a butane bottle-heater, and a 1 by 1 toilet room separated by a door. As almost everyone in Argentina we casually drank "mate"... well, my mom, i really didn't drank that when i was a kid. As the butane bottle was used only to heat the place, the mate's water had to be heated by another method... and it was this thing, this really dangerous device (it was a lot smaller though) just plugged in to the wall. I remember one day I almost touch the water and my mom yelled at me, telling me to really, never touch the water when that was plugged, and even when she had to attend customers she asked me to be far away from the thing. It might have been dangerous, but it was really common to me till now, maybe they're not so common in the "first world".
I also live in Argentina. This is far better than the ones we can buy TODAY in hardware stores and people still use them (0.5 mm cable for plastic covered one / the exposed metal is a little better construction) No one died yet (that i know of) electrocuted but wouldnt drink that poison...
Ah yeah i live in argentina too the newer ones are isolated with a ceramic but the old ones... I remember shoking myself a good 5 times before throwing it to the trash and heating water with the stove
I was thinking the same thing
Let us wait until after the apocalypse to use this thing, in case we need hot water to cook our mutant cats.
Or make a Batch of Hydrogen to blow them Mutant - Politicians up...
I want to think most of the people who bought that are like you and Clive, but my lack of faith in humanity and my cynicism tell me otherwise
Cool device, gotta admire the simplicity of it. Dangerous, yes, but elegant : )
+M390VI works though
what stopts the fuses inhouse to trip with this unit?
It is using two N, just in case!
Laughed so hard xD
My father showed me the home made version of this, with 2 steelsaw blades, it took up like 3000W of power and heated the water realy fast.
Not to mention it was dangerous.
back in the millitarry we stripped the end of a mains cord and cook the food on that way.
That someone thought this should be packaged and sold who undoubtedly knew the potential for serious injury is sad to say but totally believable.
Love how "never put your hands into the water when it's heating" is the LAST "warnning".
@bigclive did a video on these also
+Mitchell Theobald thanks for mentioning that, i've been looking for his channel for a while but forgot his name.
Anyone else see this as a Hydrogen generator for 4$? Or electrolysis device for 4$?
+Made 2 Hack It's a poor electrolysis device using 50Hz AC.
+EEVblog Dave please test it with a dc power supply?
+Made 2 Hack You can make your own, just put two metal plates next to each other and apply electricity. You can check how much hydrogen you are generating with a match, hopefully it's a lot.
+Cats Man Did that, neighbourhood no longer there... instructions unclear.
This has got to be one of the most amusing things I've seen.
i mean if both wires are in the water, and connected to mains, it should be fine right?
Oh... and I found something out: You don't get full electrolysis with an AC electrode boiler... the 50/60Hz oscillation creates friction between the molecules in the water and that produces your heat. The oscilation of the grid doesn't allow the water to fully split (some molecules of water of course will be able to!!)... Not to say you really can't make a Hydrogen torch electrolysis unit with it though... whack it on a DC source and bob's your uncle!! you got electrolysis... AND LOTS OF IT!!!
Anyone reported this to eBay, and reviewed the product there as well to warn others?
Could you possibly do a video on how to replace the glass in a 4K tv? I want to go from Glossy to Matte
I'm just imaging the catastrophic effects that would be caused if someone used this as a "fun-time" device.
Saw bigclive "open" one exactly like this op,, :p fun stuff
So eBay banned selling the Note 7 but they're okay with this?
Reminds me of when the trunk light quit working in my '86 Buick Century.... checked bulb, good. Checked power into bulb socket, no power. Traced back up power line and found a mercury switch that was not working (I didn't know that could happen), so I went to radio shack to buy a replacement. Couldn't find them on the shelf so I asked a clerk. Clerk responded in a very snotty and indignant manner, "we don't sell those" with the word those drawn out... I asked why not, clerk replied, "someone used one to make a bomb!" With the word bomb drawn out like the word those was in the previous reply. I said, "so you won't sell a mercury switch because someone might indiscriminately blow up some random person, but you'll sell RF transmitters and recievers so someone can blow up exactly who they want to blow up?" Clerk just looked stupid with no answer....
just a quick question, shouldnt this trip the mains when you plug it in?
Not if the resistance of the water is high enough, then the water act as say a dummy load.
The extra "n" is for extra warning!
I love how this product is insane but the funny thing is it works and most their claims of how it works are right! a little bit different marketing than the batterizer and energia folks!
Dave, you should look into those shower heads that have built in electric heating devices. Also known as the suicide shower head.
That's basically a commercial version of what they make in prison to boil water.
Years ago (1989 ) a friend of mine spent a year working in rural northwest China. Among the things he saw in the local city market were 220V electric skillets with barely insulated leads inside the flimsy handles. He was told that only a few people were electrocuted every year. He declined to buy one.
I'm willing to bet bigclive is the one who had this sent to Dave...
Guyfromhe He probably hasn't seen most of the really shockingly/stupidly dangerous things that Clive has a knack for finding/reviewing. I don't blame him, most people (sub)consciously ignore it for good reason.
I know what to get the mother in law on mothers day now Dave, cheers
I would add it's not only dangerous electrically, but really you do not want electrolysis in water meant to cook or drink as it might give rise to toxic products, depending on what is in the water.
Are you certain there are no current limiting components in the device?
Big Clive has a collection of those.
@ 5:46 There's an advert for Medibank Health Insurance on the page! Irony or Genius?
This is strange. My father once told me there have been these kinds of boilers in the past but they have been banned (because people have died) and although they were very efficient no one produces them anymore. He would be excited to see this I guess.
Where is Australian test with this one. I remember good to the testing centre in North Sydney once.
Cool device, just bought one of these. It's gonna make to my wall of shame ;)
0:27 I really don't like how it says "Adult Toys" in the name.
hole warmer!
I see an advertising above him that says 'Join Medibank Basic Hospital today' at 5:42. Is that just for precaution? LOL
I recommend using a metallic teaspoon and stir the water during the boiling process. That increases efficiency! (not tested, yet, hahaha)
Killerwatts!
should send this to photonicinduction to destroy it
Now if you had another one of these to have a look in, that would be too easy😂
This thing isn't dangerous at all! It's just a normal accepted risk whenever someone needs to boil water and a fire pit isn't available.
I want to note that device would never sell in the U.S. (Well in the black market you can) #1 it's not polarized, both pins are the same size, #2 needs to be a ground on any device that goes near water, #3 no holes in the end of the pins which is there to aid the pins to be firmly held into the receptacle. Besides the fact it's another alternative to sticking your toaster in your tub...
+Travis Piper Not sure how you define blacl market, but Im not aware what is in place to prevent this entering the IS ig I where to order one. I'm pretty sur there is not a customs crew that inspects each and every packages by agents with the knowledge to catch every suspect product. Many small kitchen appliances that don't have the safety ground are sold in the US. . Very few products ar e manufactured in a way that polarizing the grounded conductor is important.Yea.... this can find it's way into the US
+Travis Piper I guess that makes ebay "The black market" ;)
+Travis Piper That device would not sell legally in the U.S. today. But in the past I had a room humidifier that worked on that exact principle, with a little more protection so it was kinda sorta somewhat safe by comparison. And my mom had a curler heater that also boiled water the same way, again with interlocks on the lid.
I own old lamps that plug in either way (really need to rewire those). And old radios and TV's had a live chassis depending on which way you plugged them in and they didn't have polarized plugs either. Old radios ended up in use on the kitchen counter near the sink, and GFCI's / RCD's were not in use yet. Those that survived learned not to touch the radio and the plumbing at the same time.
Always assume that any vintage electrical device made in U. S. is dangerous.
David G Yes, vintage stuff you got to be more careful around with plugs. It's the new stuff that's built equally or more dangerously I'm concerned with lol!
Saw this on BigClive's channel and it's quite a nasty little device.
This is the same process as used in the old hot steam humidifiers. It was much easier to remove the electrode covers (so you could clean off the scale).
I found a vintage 60's or 70's one in my Grandmas kitchen and had to do rather extensive searching to figure out how dangerous it was! Hers was a medal rod on a main cable! Wow!
+Justin Nuckolls A metal rod is probably a conventional covered element. This thing is 2 bare electrodes dipped in the water.
