  • Assi Ghat is regarded by many as the soul of Kashi. It was a ghat complex on the southern tip of Benaras.
Goddess Durga fought with two demons and slained them. After the battle was over, she pointed her sword down and slammed it into the earth. That caused the ground to break and Assi river originated from that spot leading to the name Varanasi and also the name Assi which means sword.
It is also believed that Shiva killed 80 demons here and hence the name assi which means the number 80.
There are many temples in and around the vicinity of Assi Ghat. But the most important event in the evening is the Ganga Aarti.
