I still have the home video recording of this movie from when I was a kid. This movie ranked right up there with The Hobbit, Flight of Dragons, and the entire Star Wars trilogy for me. I can't believe I've finally found someone else who appreciates good entertainment from the classical times.
I had this movie on VHS as a child and was completely enamored by it, watched it hundreds of times. Came back all these years later because nostalgia. Thank you so much for posting!!
I remember watching this movie on VHS with my grandma when I was a little girl. Now she passed a few months ago and this is our first Christmas without her. I found this on UA-cam on Christmas Day after forgetting the title for so long, I think this was my grandmother's Christmas present to me.
My great grandma used to have this on VHS, when I was maybe 4 or 5. I never knew the name of it, but I've been trying to piece it together so I've only been searching for key words since I was maybe sixteen. I'm now twenty two and I'm almost in tears from finally finding this. Thank you 100x. ❤️️❤️️❤️️
OH MY GOD I CANT BELIEVE I FOUND THIS IN UA-cam THANK YOU! I am 18 and I had the disc of this when I was in kindergarten and its been like 13 years omg I used to watch this and "All dogs go to heaven" like everyday.
I thank you so much for uploading this movie. I love it. And thank you for making it available to everyone. I'm 55 now, the last time I watch this movie, I was the little nerd running the movie projector in my summer school. I was in 4th grade. I've searched for it since, but hadn't found it till now. I thank you and thank you again, because life is beautiful :)
I remember this movie so much. My dad gave it to me and he would always tell me that he was the prince who went into the boiling water. He would joke around telling me that he would always take a bath in boiling water and then go to freezing water to stay young. I know it was a joke but still, he is 50 now and still looks like a 30-year-old man.
When i was younger i found this movie on an old VHS tape. I tried to find it for a couple of days and like most people who commented below i was overjoyed to actually find this movie. The internet is awesome. I love this fairy tale and i'm surprised Disney hasn't made a movie based on it. I enjoy the English voice acting i think they did a great job. I love the story overall and i believe it is wonderful and magical.
Thank you so much! I've been really depressed lately and this blast from the past is exactly what my heart needed to keep moving forward. Thank you from the bottom of my heart
I love this movie sooo much. It's my favorite childhood movie. The way they animated the horses and pony in this is amazing. Such a heartwarming movie.
Omg, my older brother and I used to watch this on VHS when we were toddlers all the way up to our late childhood years! The Maiden Princess was always my favorite, but I loved how much Zip cared for Ivan. Thank you so much for uploading this because after our VHS copy got damaged, I thought I'd never see it again! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I am a HUGE fan of old-school fairy tales animated movies like this! Rankin-Bass, the Asterix films, Don Bluth, ETC. No matter how old or where in the world they came from, I love them to bits! Disney should seriously take notes.
When I was little in the 90s my mom rented a movie for me and said it was "My Little Pony", but it clearly wasn't. For decades I gave up on ever knowing what the movie actually was and just accepted that I was misremembering things and it was MLP. But now I finally fucking found it!
Thank you so much!!! This old cartoon has literally been haunting me for the last two years. I remembered little parts of this film as a kid and attempted to find the title to no avail. Google searches lasting over an hour yielded nothing for whale, ring, golden peacock, prince. I seriously thought I was going a little nuts finding this. Despite the little pops an crackles, you have uploaded a piece of history. Many thanks Nightingale for bringing back something I thought I would never see again. It's eerie and beautiful to see this again and I totally forgot how the music sounded, so beautiful. :)
OMG!! Thank you SO SO much for posting this! This was one of the cartoons all of my cousins and I would watch at my grandparents!!! We all have such fond memories of watching all of the movies our grandparents had for us to watch!! It's been difficult trying to find them all again, so THANK YOU!!! 😁😁😁😁😁
I have literally been searching for this movie for over 10 years. I watched it as a child, but was never able to remember what it was. After a while, I thought I just imagined the whole thing up. Every time I tried to google search it, Pinocchio always came up (not even sure why) Seriously though, when I found it I screamed and started crying I was so happy, then I immediately came to this video to watch it.Fun Fact: Within 5 minutes of finding this, I found Happy Ness: Secret of the Loch which is another movie I've been searching for years. This is going to be an amazing movie night.
Stormy oh my goodness!!!! happy ness is one I have been searching for for so many years!! I always thought it was called Happy the lochness monster. You are my hero
I’m so happy to hear other people thought they made it up or it was a dream - I thought I was insane! So glad to find this film again, brings back childhood memories
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS VERSION!! I have loved this movie my whole life and our VHS copy died years ago. I've since given up finding a copy for myself, and then I stumble upon this. I can't wait to let my kids watch this.
Thankyou thankyou thankyou! I grew up on remembering this cartoon. It was this, Wild Swans, The Last Unicorn, and Several others. As I got older, there was part of me that needed to find these cartoons. This was one of the last ones. I searched long and hard for this version of the cartoon and I am so grateful that you posted it. Btw, the princess singing still gets me every time!
+ApprenticeNostalgia Ditto!! The song that the princess sings has stuck with me till this day!! Love the movie!! Last Unicorn too..they are showing it on Netflix now
I seen this movie in the mid-sixties on WGN Chicago. It was shown on the children's show Garfield Goose with Frazier Thomas. The movie was in Russian with subtitles. Absolutely loved it. I loved Olivier and the Artful Dodger which was a sequel to the Olivier Twist story. It was part of the Saturday Superstar Movie lineup.
I remember this from when I was a kid... I still have it on VHS, but unfortunately do not have a way to play it or anything. xD I'm so glad I found this! It was wonderful watching it and re-living these moments from my childhood. Thanks for posting! ^_^
Such a beautiful animation movie.. and beautiful music.. background music ..hats off to the team that worked behind and for the dubbing.. everything 👏👏👏💞💖👌
Thank you! I don't even know how I ended up with the VHS tape to begin with (probably because all but 2 of my cousins are 70's babies), but I'm glad I did. This is my backup in case either the tape or both my VCRs die
Hey guys. I remember watching this in early 80's. Its amazingI was searching for this for years :) thank you for uploading it brings back great memories
I have been looking for this forever, thank you!! I never saw the movie but I had the soundtrack for some reason - brings back such great childhood memories!!
Thank you and Thank you very very much, Nightingale, I was finding this cartoon very long time. It was remain in my memory. I can remember every scene of this cartoon. It is so classic. I will watch it again. Thank you so much for uploading it. 😄
oh my gosh! I didnt realize this when I watched this as a kid...but the king is voiced by Jim Backus! (aka Thurston Howell III. from gilligans island! and Mr Magoo!)
Thank you, thank you, thank you a thousand times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been looking for this for such a long time! It was one of my absolute favorites when I was a little girl! :D
Hello! Placing this comment here in hopes that someone might see it and recognize what I am searching for. I used to have a VHS with a collection of short animations on them. One story was the main story of this, the story of the green thumb, a story of a crying statue that no one visited, and a story of a prince capturing a beautiful glowing pony so he could have it all to himself only to turn it into a depressed pony and setting it free to be itself. Does anyone have a clue by chance what this VHS tape might be? It looked like it was made between the 1960s-1980s. The film is of stills and not of any movement except of maybe a bird flying overhead. I've been looking for at least a lead or a name for a year now and just wondering if anyone might know what I might be talking about... Also, thank you Nightingale205 for posting this. This was great to watch!
OMG this was one of my favorite movies growing up and I always felt like I was the only person who had seen it. Was beginning to think I made it up lol. So good!
Thanks for this! I couldn't remember the title but I remember this film from my good ol' local VHS rental store days as a kid. Great memories-just subbed! :)
I saw bits and pieces of this movie once, in the 80s, I think...maybe NBC on a Sunday Morning? Anyway, now I've finally seen it in its entirety for the first time! UA-cam is a good thing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise! 😊
Oh my lord, thank you so much for uploading this! All these years I've remembered absolutely nothing about it but a song that went "In the dark of the night" and the fact that I hated it and found it unspeakably, agonizingly boring. Not nearly enough pony.
My English teacher in 4th grade showed me this movie, but my mind was like “I give up on most movies now!” I don’t know about the rest of you, but I still think that about the movie
One of my favorites as a child, been looking for this for years! Thank you so much! Watching this as an adult, I didn't realize that witchy looking groom drowned, as he should, or what an ungrateful, greedy, gullible hog that little king was 😂 😂 nor how useless Ivan was. Poor zip, not only did she literally carry Ivan on her back, but she carried him figuratively, too! How silly!
+tverskojkozel the US :) had it on an old vhs tape as a little kid, I have absolutely no idea where it came from. Is the translation accurate to the original? :)
Ivan the Fool (Ivanushka the Fool) is one of the most popular heroes of Russian fairy tales. It embodies a special strategy, proceeding not from the standard postulates of practical reason, but based on the search for its own solutions, often contrary to common sense, but, ultimately, bringing success. Has some features of a "trickster". According to some versions, the name with the epithet "fool" is the name-amulet, which prevents the evil eye. According to another version of the "fool" - this is the property status of Ivan the fool. Since he is the third son, he does not have a share in the inheritance (stays in the fools). As a rule, his social status is low - a peasant son or the son of an old man with an old woman. In the family he was often the third son. Not married. With the help of magic tools and especially thanks to his "mind," Ivan the fool successfully passes all the tests and attains the highest values: he defeats the enemy, marries the royal daughter, receives both wealth and fame ... Perhaps Ivan the fool achieves all this, that he embodies the first (according to Georges Dumezil) magico-legal function, connected not so much with the deed as with the word, with priestly duties. Ivan the Fool is the only brother who speaks in a fairy tale. Ivan the fool unravel the riddles, that is, he does what the priest does in many traditions during the ritual dedicated to the main annual holiday. Ivan the Fool is a poet and musician; in fairy tales, his singing is emphasized, his ability to play on a magic flute or magic gusli, forcing a herd dancing. Ivan the Fool is the bearer of a special speech, in which, in addition to riddles, jokes, jokes, fragments are noted where either the phonetic or semantic principles of ordinary speech are violated, or even something reminiscent of wit; compare "extravagance", "nonsense", language paradoxes based, in particular, on the game of homonymy and synonymy, the polysemy and multi-referentiality of words, etc. (for example, the killing of a dragon by a spear Ivan the Fool describes as "evil from evil has died"). Ivan the fool is connected in the plot with a certain critical situation, completed by a holiday (victory over the enemy and marriage), in which he is the main participant. Similar stories have other European nations. For example, the German fairy tale "Hans Dumm" , the Italian fairy tale "Pietro pazzo" by , the French fairy tale "The Marriage of Jean Idiot"
The original version was spoken in Russian right? That is how I remembered it. Saw it when I was little, about 40 years ago, never forgotten about it. Thanks for posting!
I didn't know there were so many English translation/variation of this animation. But I'm positive that this is the version I watched as a kid. The princess's song is what I remember the most! :)
It actually was! if you look up the the hunchback horse movie it’s the first or second result uploaded by Omartistic though there are two versions one with this versions voices and animation just cleaned up and brighter and another with different voice actors and even newer animation and slightly different character designs
The ending always gets me. Just the music and Ivan and the Princess walking as the winter melts into spring just turns on the water works for me and I DUNNO WHY!
There were TWO Russian versions of this. The first was animated in the late 40s, then over the years the negative deteriorated, and, as these were the days before digital restoration, they animated the whole thing over in the 70s, and that's the version dubbed for the US. The 40s version has since been restored.
Yep, because they couldn't re-release it in the 70s by popular demand due to not having the technology for restoration at the time, Ivan Ivano-Vano (the originals director) decided to remake the original with a few alterations here and there, like the scene with the whale being forgiven when he set the ships he's eaten free and getting the ring for the maiden in the ocean.
43:40 I'm getting the impression that the king is a bit manic-depressive. 48:30 hmm... I never realized how many children's stories revolved around kidnapping. Or birdnapping. Or virginnapping. Man, does this kid even steal the napkins off your table? Would that be napnapping? 1:05:00 wow! What do you know? Once again, I haven't seen this since I was 6 or 7 on a Sunday afternoon.. and all I remember was a small flying horse blowing on a large kettle to freeze the water/oil. I had no idea what it was or of ever seeing it again.. and here it is! I never realized this was the movie until the (15 year old?!?) Princess started talking about the 3 kettles. 1:12:47 "When our king climbed out, he wasn't younger.. but he was much wiser" Yeah... _wiser_ ...
I remember renting this edition from Family video as a kid. The Princess' song about being a lonely kid was always stuck in my head. I ended up finding one of the Russian versions on here a few years ago and it was interesting hearing the more traditional music than these groovy pop songs.
I still have the home video recording of this movie from when I was a kid. This movie ranked right up there with The Hobbit, Flight of Dragons, and the entire Star Wars trilogy for me. I can't believe I've finally found someone else who appreciates good entertainment from the classical times.
i have spent YEARS looking for this movie. thank you thank you thank you!

In English! This makes me so happy.
tysm for uploading this!!!
Geeeeewiz!! I remember watching this on laser disc when I was a kid in the 80’s. 😂 back when life was simple.
this is the children s movie
today s directors and story writers please learn from this
but don't copy it
after all master piece is the master piece
I didn't know there were so many English translation/variation of this animation. But I'm positive that this is the version I watched as a kid. The princess's song is what I remember the most! :)
Holy fuck... I've been looking for this version for years!
I used to watch this on the family film festival every year on channel five
Thank you so much for sharing this! It needs to be remastered and it’s a shame it probably won’t ever happen.
It actually was! if you look up the the hunchback horse movie it’s the first or second result uploaded by Omartistic
though there are two versions one with this versions voices and animation just cleaned up and brighter and another with different voice actors and even newer animation and slightly different character designs
The ending always gets me. Just the music and Ivan and the Princess walking as the winter melts into spring just turns on the water works for me and I DUNNO WHY!
6/13/18: Thanx for posting.
I miss having openings like this on my VHS !!! 😭😭😭
There were TWO Russian versions of this. The first was animated in the late 40s, then over the years the negative deteriorated, and, as these were the days before digital restoration, they animated the whole thing over in the 70s, and that's the version dubbed for the US. The 40s version has since been restored.
Really?! I'd be interested to see the original. Any idea where I could find it?
+Jessica Sage Just search for it on UA-cam. It was all I could find which is why I uploaded this version.
+Nightingale205 and I am so glad you did n_n this is the version I love and grew up with
Both variants of Russian animation were uploaded on youTube - " The Little Humpbacked Horse "
1:13, It sounds like John Sebastian of "The Lovin' Spoonful" fame singing "On a Beautiful Day" at the end of the film.
_wiser_ ...
Lovely.
Like most of those who wrote even i have been on search for this complete version.. 👍
such a dear classic
I remember renting this edition from Family video as a kid. The Princess' song about being a lonely kid was always stuck in my head. I ended up finding one of the Russian versions on here a few years ago and it was interesting hearing the more traditional music than these groovy pop songs.
i remember the magic pony movie back when i was little and i love it
That was a great movie
